Douglas alum Roman Anthony scores both runs in Red Sox walk-off win over Marlins
Trevor Story's single in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in Roman Anthony with the game-winning run as the Boston Red Sox beat the visiting Miami Marlins 2-1 Friday night. Miami's Josh Simpson came on to pitch the ninth and loaded the bases with no outs by walking Anthony and Alex Bregman, and then hitting Jarren Duran with a pitch. Story's game-winning hit came against Calvin Faucher, who replaced Simpson (2-2) after he hit Duran. Story had two of Boston's three hits in the game. Aroldis Chapman (4-2) earned the victory by tossing a scoreless ninth. Boston starting pitcher Lucas Giolito was pulled with one out in the seventh. He gave up a run on seven hits, struck out five and walked one. Five of the seven hits he surrendered were doubles. Kyle Stowers and Liam Hicks each collected two hits for Miami, which was 1-of-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners on base. Miami's Sandy Alcantara pitched the first six innings and limited Boston to one run on two hits. He struck out seven and walked one. The Marlins led 1-0 after Xavier Edwards and Stowers hit back-to-back doubles in the third. The Red Sox didn't have a baserunner until Story singled to lead off the bottom half of the fifth. Story then set a franchise record when he stole second with one out. It was his 21st stolen base in as many attempts this season, which is the most consecutive stolen bases by a Red Sox player to start a season. Boston's Julio Lugo was successful on his first 20 stolen base attempts in 2007, but was thrown out on his 21st attempt. Boston tied the game in the sixth. Anthony drew a two-out walk against Alcantara and scored when Bregman followed with an RBI double.

Red Sox own one of MLB's best home records, a good sign for playoff push
BOSTON — For the last two seasons, the Boston Red Sox have lamented an inability to rack up wins at home. This year has been different. The Red Sox have used Fenway Park to their advantage and own the fourth-best home record in the majors at 40-22, helping them hold on to the second American League wild-card spot. Advertisement Friday night, Trevor Story's bases-loaded single in the ninth propelled Boston to its major-league-leading 10th walk-off win, in a 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins. Though the Red Sox were returning home after a disappointing 2-4 trip, Friday's win gave them 15 wins in their last 17 games at home. 'We talk about the home record and the road record, but (having) that last at-bat, it matters,' manager Alex Cora said. 'If you look at our games in the ninth inning on the road or extra innings, it hasn't happened, but here, it's happening. We're doing a good job. We're playing good defense. That season, the club finished 57-24 at home. In the years following, Boston has managed winning records in only 2021 (49-32) and 2022 (43-32). Neither year was nearly as dominant as 2025 has been. 'It's just fun, man,' Story said. 'Just, in general, playing here is amazing. It's everything that you want to be a part of as a player — the environment, the atmosphere. And we're playing really good baseball here in August, so we're obviously in a good spot. But I think that's what makes it most exciting, most special, is that these games are super meaningful, and playing here at Fenway is a huge advantage for us.' All of that is part of the reason the Red Sox seemed unfazed that they didn't have a hit off Miami starter Sandy Alcantara until the fifth inning and only scratched out their first run in the sixth. The club has been playing so well at home, it seemed inevitable it would find a way to win. The Red Sox have been playing a more exciting brand of baseball, bringing fans back to the ballpark. The packed houses, the players say, fuel the team and rattle the opponent. Advertisement Friday's crowd of 36,854 marked the club's 12th sellout, the longest sellout streak since 32 straight games in 2018. 'Just the energy that we have as a club when we get to play at home, the fan support, it's been incredible,' said starter Lucas Giolito, who held Miami to one run on seven hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings, exiting to a standing ovation in a tie game. 'It feels very magical here. That's how I would describe it,' Giolito said. 'Putting on the Red Sox uniform and playing here, I think it's just this energy that we feed off of as pitchers, having the home crowd standing up and behind us every single pitch.' At Fenway this season, not only do the Red Sox lead the American League with a .785 OPS, but their pitchers also have a combined 3.42 ERA. Cora suggested one reason the club is playing better at home this season is a more balanced lineup with right-handers pulling the ball in the air. Boston signed Alex Bregman for that reason this winter, but the re-emergence of Story as an offensive force has been a boost to the club, and the development of rookie catcher Carlos Narváez has added another element. Romy Gonzalez and Rob Refsnyder have been key right-handed bats against left-handed pitching. 'I think having right-handed hitters that don't hit it off the wall, they hit it over the wall, it helps,' Cora said. 'It just felt like you needed more than one guy to hit the ball off the wall or over. Trevor has been the game-changer. He's been amazing, and they've all been really good at home.' Unlike earlier in the season, when the Red Sox couldn't get out of their own way and piled up tough losses, the confidence they're playing with now is contagious. Even with Alcantara silencing the Boston bats for five innings, Story broke up the no-hitter in the fifth with a single, and Ceddanne Rafaela made him work the following inning with a 10-pitch at-bat. Rafaela struck out, but Cora pointed to that at-bat tiring out Alcantara before Roman Anthony drew another impressive eight-pitch walk and ran on contact when Bregman sliced a double to right, tying the score. Three innings later, the Red Sox loaded the bases, and Story walked it off. Advertisement Though there have been struggles on the road, the calm confidence at Fenway has been a key reason the Red Sox are an MLB-best 23-5 at home since June 10. As the Red Sox vie for their first postseason berth since 2021, their play at home should give them a boost down the stretch. They'll play 19 of their remaining 39 games at home with the fourth-easiest schedule in the majors. Eight of their next 11 series are against teams with sub-.500 records.
