palm oil exports to India
to exceed the 5 million-tonnes mark in 2025, up from 4.8 million tonnes in 2024, following India's decision to cut import tariffs, a senior industry official said.
The world's top palm oil producer is also shipping 100,000 germinated palm seeds to India this year to support the South Asian nation's ambitious plan to expand palm cultivation to 1 million hectares by 2025-26, Indonesia Palm Oil Council (IPOC) chairman
Eddy Martono
told PTI in an interview.

to 10 per cent, from 20 per cent, as part of efforts to boost domestic edible oil availability and control prices.
Indonesia's palm oil exports to India fell to 4.8 million tonnes in 2024 calendar year, from 6 million tonnes in 2023, partly due to higher palm oil prices compared to soybean and sunflower oils for most of 2024.

However, palm oil prices have traded below soybean oil since April 2025, improving competitiveness.
"I think there is no problem with the price this year. In 2025, I am sure we will increase exports to India," Martono said.
India is ramping up palm seed imports as part of its
National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm
(NMEO-OP), which aims to expand cultivation from the current 350,000 hectares to 1 million hectares by 2025-26.
The country purchased about 500,000 seeds in 2023 and 2024 combined, with 100,000 more expected this year, Martono said. About 200 palm seeds are required for cultivation per hectare.
Indonesia supports palm seed exports to India through business-to-business arrangements and can provide technical guidance given its experience in palm cultivation, he added.
IPOC and the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance collaboration in the palm oil sector. "India is a very important market for Indonesia. Hope to see stable exports to India after the MoU," Martono said.
The partnership also aims to address consumer concerns about palm oil's health impacts in India.
"Consumers in India still have misconceptions about Indonesian palm oil. Palm oil is very healthy oil," Martono said, adding that IPOC is collaborating with IVPA to counter negative campaigns about Indonesian palm oil.
India is the world's largest importer and consumer of edible oils.

Govt allows women to work night shifts, but with riders
Bhubaneswar: To increase employment opportunities for women and facilitate ease of doing business, state govt has allowed the engagement of women employees during night shifts in shops and commercial establishments across the state. The labour and ESI department, amending the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956, issued a set of strict conditions to ensure the safety and dignity of women employees working night shifts. According to the notification, establishments must obtain written consent from women opting for night shifts. The employer must ensure a minimum of three women are on duty during such hours, and a designated female supervisor must also be present. An earlier clause that had imposed limitations on women night shift work in private firms, was withdrawn. The Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956, applies to any shop or establishment such as hotel, restaurant, cafe, boarding or eating house, theatre or other place of public amusement/entertainment. The govt instructed employers to prevent overwork and fatigue of women workers. Female employees must not be assigned continuous day and night shifts, and there must be an eight-hour rest period between shifts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Employers must also ensure access to basic amenities like drinking water and toilets, and prominently display helpline numbers — 181 for women and 18003456703 for labour & ESI-related grievances. Compliance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, is mandatory. All employers engaging women at night must submit a self-certification on the designated govt portal affirming compliance with these conditions. Non-compliance will attract penalties under Section 35 of the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, the notification added. Labour minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia said, "By allowing women to work night shifts with strict safety provisions, the govt is not only creating equal employment opportunities, but also ensuring a safe working environment for women." However, opposition BJD criticised the govt for seeking a self-declaration from women employees. BJD MLA Pramilla Mallik said, "If women sign a self-declaration form for night shifts, it means they are responsible for their own safety. Then why is the govt there, and what will the govt do for the safety of women?"

Why Trump's threat is unlikely to wean India off Russian crude
AI photo NEW DELHI: Trump's latest threat is unlikely to affect India's decision to source crude from Moscow as long as it's cheaper than the alternatives. "We will go solely by the interest of our consumers and opt for the best option price-wise. If Russian crude works out cheaper than what we can get from other sources, why should we penalise our consumers?" said a senior government source who did not rule out the possibility of India exploring further discounts from Moscow in the light of Trump's threat. Sources said NSA Ajit Doval's visit to Russia, beginning Tuesday, will yield clarity on the geo-economic trilemma. The Centre has so far not made any move to wean off Indian oil refiners from Russian crude, which comes at a steep discount compared to purchases from west Asia or US. It has not just helped keep domestic pump prices lower, but also benefited European countries, which have been major buyers of diesel and jet fuel from India, sources said. Biz circles agree with Centre's criticism of Trump's latest diktat Business circles in New Delhi agreed with the Centre's criticism of Trump's latest diktat. "India's oil trade with Russia has taken place with full transparency and broad understanding with the US. One of the key reasons India stepped up Russian oil purchases was to help stabilise global oil markets after Western sanctions disrupted traditional supply chains. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo By maintaining diversified and affordable energy access, India contributed to preventing a global oil price shock. Trump's decision to raise tariffs on India citing oil trade is not only unjustified - it ignores market realities, misrepresents trade data, and undermines a key strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific," trade research body GTRI said in a note. Interestingly, Trump's sudden bid to arm twist India into abandoning purchase of Russian crude follows declining purchase from Moscow because of sheer logic of markets. In May, India's crude petroleum imports from Russia fell almost 10% to $9.2 billion. Trump's latest comment is expected to create fresh uncertainty among American buyers, who are in talks with Indian exporters for placing orders for the busy Christmas season. The government's firm stand on farm and dairy is seen to have come as a blow for Trump, who had gone public over a dozen times claiming that India had agreed to slash tariffs. Shaken by the govt's steadfast opposition to blocking genetically modified American corn and soybean as well as its public rebuttal of claims over the US mediating a ceasefire during Operation Sindoor have hurt Trump's claim to have brokered several peace deals - one in each month of his second term as president. During the talks, negotiators had indicated the government's willingness to step up purchases of American oil, gas, fertilizer and defence equipment to improve the trade balance which is tilted in India's favour.
