WTC Final: Ball dance continues on Day 2 but Oz hold upper hand
The broadcaster's own graphics backed up that assertion there was nothing alarming about the average seam or swing movement over the first two days. It was just good bowling vs not so good batting. That perfect storm set-up resulted in a loss of 14 wickets in the day, including 13 after lunch on Thursday. As the players walked off the field, Australia will perhaps rightly believe they have their noses in front as they lead by 218, with two second innings wickets in hand.
More than four hours earlier, at lunch, the Proteas had counterpunched their way to 5/121 after Temba Bavuma, David Bedingham and Kyle Verrreynne had showed a mix of fight and imagination.
The trio added added 70 runs to get within striking distance before Pat Cummins did what he does best. Strangle the batting unit while keeping both edges as well as the stumps in play.
Just as the alliance was beginning to bloom between the pair of Bavuma and Bedingham, Cummins got himself on. He did concede a six but across two spells separated by lunch, he picked up five wickets for 14 runs. There was genteel movement but that was enough to leave the batters scrambling.
If it was Cummins who starred with the ball before tea to give the holders a big chance, the Proteas' all sorts pace combination got in on the act soon after to totally light the blue touchpaper and set the stage for an early finish.
A lead of 74 is gold in game with low scores and it had ballooned to over a 100 as the beleaguered Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja put on 28 for the first wicket. The floodgates, though, opened in the 11th over thanks to Kagiso Rabada. He got the ball to straighten a touch and the southpaw nicked it to the keeper.
Cameron Green came and went without adding to the score. An uncomfortable position turned perilous after Steve Smith missed a rather straight delivery off Lungi Ngidi. Ngidi also played a big role to play in Australia losing wickets in a cluster, a welcome return to form after a wayward first innings outing where he conceded none for 45 off just eight overs.
The wickets started to tumble and the mode of dismissals was similar to the first 150 overs or so — keeping the edges in play and bringing the stumps into play with whatever deviation off the surface. Each of the next four wickets were either bowled or leg-before. When they weren't getting bowled or being trapped in front, they were getting beaten.
It's why the innings Alex Carey played before being dismissed could yet be the one that gives Australia its second mace. The southpaw is known for his firefighting abilities and he once again displayed his class with a nerveless 50-ball 43.
On Friday, with the weather expected to be largely clear, South Africa have the chance to do something special, a first men's ICC title this side of 2000. Can they do it?
Brief scores: Australia 212 and 144/8 in 40 ovs (Carey 43, Rabada 3/44, Ngidi 3/35) vs South Africa 138 in 57.1 ovs (Bavuma 36, Bedingham 45, Cummins 6/28, Starc 2/41))

Rohit Sharma Trains Hard In Gym With Ex-India Coach For Next ODI Series: See Viral Pic
Last Updated: Rohit Sharma, India's ODI captain, is preparing for the three-match series against Australia starting October 19. India's one-day captain Rohit Sharma has started intense preparations for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, set to begin on October 19. Although he announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year, Rohit remains the face of India's ODI team. A recent picture of Rohit working out in the gym with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has gone viral on social media. Rohit's last international appearance was during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, clinching the title by defeating New Zealand in the final at the Dubai International Stadium. Rohit played a crucial role in leading the team, both as a captain and with his batting. After the Champions Trophy, he played for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he regained his form midway through the season, scoring 418 runs in 15 matches. However, during the tournament, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket, having already stepped away from T20Is earlier. Hence, ODIs are now the only international format where fans can watch him play for India. Earlier, former India cricketer Yograj Singh had sparked discussions about Rohit's longevity in international cricket. He strongly feels the Indian skipper can continue playing until the age of 45, provided he maintains his fitness rigorously. 'The man about whom so many people speak rubbish, Rohit Sharma, I said that day that Rohit will be my man, the man, my man," Yograj told News18 CricketNext. 'The way he batted, his batting one side and the rest of the team's batting on the other side. His innings on one side and the rest of the world on the other. That's his class. You can say, 'Rohit, aapki hume 5 saal aur zarurat hai yaar' (Rohit, we need you for five more years, man) so please do more for your country, work on your fitness and everything. Put four men on him, make him run 10 kilometres every morning. He has the class to play till 45 years of age, if he wants." 'I believe you should play domestic cricket; the more you play that, the fitter you'll be. Who got the Man of the Match in the final? Rohit Sharma. So you should only talk about things that you know. If you want to talk about his game and fitness, do that only if you have played at some level. Do you feel ashamed for talking like this?" he added. view comments Location : Mumbai, India, India First Published: News cricket Rohit Sharma Trains Hard In Gym With Ex-India Coach For Next ODI Series: See Viral Pic Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Vengsarkar Donates 39-Year-Old Treasure From Kapil Dev's Iconic Triumph: 'When People See...'
Last Updated: Dilip Vengsarkar donated his Test sweater and blazer to the Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum, celebrating Mumbai's cricket legacy. He wore the sweater during the 1986 Lord's Test. Dilip Vengsarkar, former India captain and one of the country's finest batters, has shown a special gesture to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) by donating his Test sweater and blazer to the soon-to-be-inaugurated Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum. The museum, dedicated to celebrating Mumbai's glorious cricketing legacy, is set to be inaugurated on Saturday, August 23. The sweater holds immense historical significance as Vengsarkar wore it during the famous Lord's Test in June 1986, where he scored an unbeaten 126 runs against England. His innings laid the foundation for India's five-wicket victory under Kapil Dev's captaincy, a match still remembered as one of Indian cricket's most iconic overseas wins. What Did Dilip Vengsarkar Say? Speaking to Mid-Day, Vengsarkar explained his decision to donate the memorabilia. He shared, 'I have given MCA the sweater I wore during the 1986 Lord's Test. I had worn it throughout the England tour. I have also given my India blazer, but I don't remember exactly in which series I used that blazer. In the future as well, I will give my bats and other gear to the museum." Vengsarkar, who represented India from the mid-1970s until 1992, expressed his deep bond with MCA. 'Right from the age of 12 when I played Giles Shield till I retired [from international cricket] in 1992, I played all MCA matches, so Mumbai Cricket Association means everything to me. And right from the beginning, every official has supported me hugely, whether it is school, college, university, office, club cricket or while playing for Mumbai and India. And we played for Mumbai with a lot of pride. Whatever I've learnt is because of Mumbai cricket," he added. The 69-year-old veteran, who accumulated 6,868 Test runs and 3,508 ODI runs for India, has previously donated memorabilia, including a helmet and blazer, to the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association's museum in Indore. Vengsarkar believes such contributions inspire young cricketers. 'When people see an international cricketer's bats, gloves, pads, sweaters, or a fast bowler's shoes, etc, they will surely be motivated to work hard," said Vengsarkar. The 1986 Lord's Test remains memorable not just for Vengsarkar's century but also for Kapil Dev's all-round brilliance. The Indian captain claimed four wickets in the second innings and then sealed the chase of 134 with a blistering 23 not out off just 10 balls, hitting four fours and a six. India went on to win the series 2-0, having also triumphed at Headingley. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
