William Byron Lost It All as Strategy Call Backfires
William Byron was on his way to a glorious NASCAR Cup Series victory at the Michigan International Speedway, but the same strategy that nearly helped him win backfired greatly. He led the race for 98 laps but had to go down pit road with just four laps to go.
The Michigan race demanded drivers to be quick, but they also needed to conserve fuel at the same time. It turned out that the race strategy to maintain a dominant lead during the race consumed more gas from Byron's car, which then prevented him from winning. He had to pit to refuel and settle for a 28th place finish. Denny Hamlin passed him and claimed his third victory of the season.
Speaking to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, Byron admitted that it was hard to save fuel and maintain the lead. He said:

We needed one and a half laps more fuel, so we probably saved three quarters of a lap, I guess. It was hard to save enough obviously and keep the lead, and also kinda drew him [Hamlin] in.
"It seemed like he could just run hard, didn't seem like he had to worry about fuel at all. I was having [to] kinda do both. He got me there for sure, but I was going to run out. It was racing, and then it didn't really matter because we ran out."
When asked if he would follow a more conservative approach for the regular season title or if he would just go for the win, Byron said:
"Just try to go for the win. I felt like we had one of the dominant cars all day, and unfortunately, when you're so close to a window like that, you are right in front, you burn a lot more fuel. It was time to manage both. It sucks."

Byron admitted in another interview that there was not much he could do in such a situation. He told Sports on Prime:
"We didn't have enough. We were going to run out with a lap and a half left, we did run out with a lap and a half left. I was trying to manage both [and] manage the gap and save [gas]. It sucks, it really stings. Not able to do much about that. It is what it is."

First look at NASCAR's 2026 Cup Series schedule, from Daytona to Homestead
The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series schedule features a new race at a military base, a return to a track once thought lost to time, a new All-Star Race host and a new site for the championship finale, according to a copy obtained by The Athletic and confirmed via multiple sources briefed on the league's plans. Advertisement The 38-race season (36 points races and two non-points races) opens with the Clash exhibition on Feb. 1, 2026, followed by the Daytona 500 on Feb. 15 and concluding with the championship finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 8, 2026. Homestead returns as the host track for the championship for the first time since 2019, replacing Phoenix Raceway, which is now slotted elsewhere in the 10-race playoffs. NASCAR announced the switch this spring, beginning a rotation of its championship race to different tracks on an expected yearly basis. In addition to Homestead returning as the championship venue, the other three big changes to the 2026 schedule are a temporary street circuit constructed at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, the return of Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., after a six-year absenceO To make room for San Diego and Chicagoland, NASCAR won't return to Mexico City or the Chicago Street Course, a temporary circuit built in downtown Chicago that's held Cup races for the past three years. In June, Mexico City hosted the first international Cup points race since the 1950s, but logistics and finding a spot on the calendar that fit for both the city and NASCAR prevented an encore visit next year. NASCAR hopes to return to both Mexico City and Chicago in 2027. Other notable changes to the 2026 schedule include: Although some reports had Iowa Speedway at risk of being dropped, the short track is again on the schedule for a third consecutive year, slated for Aug. 9. There was never any consideration that Iowa would not have a date, according to sources briefed on NASCAR's thinking. Iowa has sold out each of the last two years and has strong sponsorship in place. NASCAR intends to release the 2026 Cup Series schedule this week. The full schedule below is the final version, according to those sources briefed on the league's plans. NASCAR Power Rankings: Ryan Blaney No. 1; Joey Logano, Alex Bowman Back In
NASCAR Cup Series NASCAR Power Rankings: Ryan Blaney No. 1; Joey Logano, Alex Bowman Back In Published Aug. 19, 2025 1:42 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Two drivers who finished in the top five at Richmond Raceway enter the rankings, as Alex Bowman (second) and Joey Logano (fourth) are back in the top 10. Having some momentum is good for those looking ahead to the playoffs. Those on the bubble or needing a win to get in — well, they know they need some good fortune in the regular-season finale Saturday at Daytona. This will be the last power rankings for the 2025 season. Starting next week, we will start playoff rankings, ranking drivers based on their chances of winning the title. Dropped out: Christopher Bell (Last Week: 7), Ryan Preece (Last Week: 9) On the verge: Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, Austin Dillon, Ryan Preece, Tyler Reddick, Shane van Gisbergen 10. Chase Elliott (Last Week: 10) Elliott got collected in an accident on Lap 198, putting him last at Richmond. But he'll stay in these rankings, as the Hendrick driver had a shot to win the regular-season title up until Saturday night. ADVERTISEMENT Chase Elliott greets fans as he walks on stage during driver intros prior to the NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway 9. Joey Logano (Last Week: Not Ranked) Logano had a solid night at Richmond with a fourth-place finish. It was his first top five in the last 11 races, but the Team Penske driver does have three top 10s in the last six. 8. Brad Keselowski (Last Week: 8) Keselowski had a relatively quiet day at Richmond with a ninth-place finish. It was the RFK Racing driver's eighth top 10 in his last 13 starts. No. 6 Brad Keselowski drives during the race at Richmond 7. Alex Bowman (Last Week: Not Ranked) Bowman dropped out of the rankings a week earlier but after nearly winning Richmond, he's back on the list. The Hendrick driver's second-place finish gives him four top 10s (and two top fives) in his last five starts but his playoff status will come down to Daytona. 6. Bubba Wallace (Last Week: 6) A wheel falling off the Wallace car ruined a potentially great day as he had led 123 laps and finished second in the first stage and first in the second stage. At least the 23XI Racing driver knows he had speed. Bubba Wallace greets fans as he walks on stage during driver intros prior to Richmond 5. Denny Hamlin (Last Week: 4) Hamlin had a rough day on pit road and finished 10th at Richmond. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver had five top fives in his nine previous starts, but this stopped some of the bleeding from a pair of finishes outside the top 20 entering Richmond. 4. Chase Briscoe (Last Week: 3) Involved in the wreck around the midway point of the race, Briscoe finished 13th at Richmond. The JGR driver had four top fives in the five races leading into Richmond. Chase Briscoe looks on during practice for the NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out 400 3. Kyle Larson (Last Week: 5) Larson finished sixth at Richmond. And while he might have hoped for more, the Hendrick driver at least had a solid result after a pair of finishes outside the top 25. 2. William Byron (Last Week: 2) Byron finished 12th at Richmond but clinched the regular-season title. So it was one of the best 12th-place finishes of the Hendrick driver's career. William Byron clinched the regular-season title at Richmond 1. Ryan Blaney (Last Week: 1) Blaney retained the top spot with a third-place finish at Richmond. It was the fifth consecutive finish of eighth or better for the Team Penske driver. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. Steelers' Jalen Ramsey snubbed off Fox Sports' top-10 CB list
The Pittsburgh Steelers disrespect tour apparently kicked off early this season — as Fox Sports recently snubbed All-Pro CB Jalen Ramsey from their top-10 cornerbacks list. On Tuesday, Fox Sports posted their top-10 cornerbacks for the 2025 season on social media — omitting Ramsey altogether and instead placing him in the "honorable mentions" section. Denver Broncos, Pat Surtain II Houston Texans, Derek Stingley Jr. New York Jets, Sauce Gardner Kansas City Chiefs, Trent McDuffie New England Patriots, Christian Gonzalez Baltimore Ravens, Marlon Humphrey Cleveland Browns, Denzel Ward Seattle Seahawks, Devon Witherspoon Chicago Bears, Jaylon Johnson San Francisco 49ers, Deommodore Lenoir Honorable mentions: Philadelphia Eagles, Quinyon Mitchell Carolina Panthers, Jaycee Horn Pittsburgh Steelers, Jalen Ramsey Fox Sports' list is filled with young, talented cornerbacks — but the "Ramsey-is-declining" false narrative shouldn't be enough to keep him from cracking the top 10. Ramsey clearly has some doubters to prove wrong this upcoming season, playing on arguably the greatest defense he's ever been a part of — one that HC Mike Tomlin believes will make history.
