Seven-run first propels Augustana to consecutive titles

Yahoo06-05-2025
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Augustana softball won its second straight NSIC championship this weekend with a 12-1 victory over Winona State.
Early offense propelled the Vikings. They batted around before an out was recorded in the bottom of the first inning, all leading to seven runs.
'We were ready to attack from the get go,' Augustana graduate student Lexi Lander said. 'First pitch, that's kind of our thing, attack every single pitch. And so we were just ready to jump on them early from the get go. And I think that's kind of what helped propel us throughout the whole game.'
'The ball at that point looks like a beach ball for the kids when they're hitting,' Augustana head coach Gretta Melsted said. 'And it just it makes your defense be able to play a little bit freer. Your pitchers can play a little bit freer.'
Augustana, who has finished first in the conference five straight seasons, claimed its fourth tournament title in the last decade.
'I don't think it ever will because we just did so much energy into these games, especially at home,' Augustana sophomore outfielder Desi Cuevas said. 'We always want to win here. We just did that.'
'It is so special,' Lander said. 'That's kind of culture here at Augie, where we play to compete to play hard and go after teams. And that's exactly what we did this weekend.'
The championship game victory marks 21 straight wins for the Vikings. And they feel as though that streak is an indication of their upward trajectory heading into the NCAA regionals.
'It's exciting to watch our players just get better and better,' Melsted said. 'And I feel like we're playing our best softball right now. We're just doing this, and that's what you want to do at this time of year.'
'We definitely had our ups and downs throughout the season,' Augustana graduate pitcher Grace Glanzer said. 'A lot of youth, a lot of learning, a lot of getting to know each other a little bit on the field. And I think as hard as that was at times, it's prepared us for now.'
Augustana will open Central Regional play against Missouri Southern State in Joplin, Mo., on Thursday.

Houston Texans star suffers potential severe injury, carted off field at training camp

Houston Texans star suffers potential severe injury, carted off field at training camp originally appeared on The Sporting News The Houston Texans are gearing up to begin preseason play on Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings. And while there is a lot of excitement to get games started for the 2025 season, the Texans will be doing it without one of their top defenders. New Texans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson suffered an injury in Thursday's training camp practice, which led to him being carted off the field. "CJ Gardner Johnson was carted off," ESPN Texans reporter DJ Bien-Aime reports. "He did not walk to the sidelines or anything. He was carted off from the spot he was injured." It sounds as if this was serious, which means Houston could be in the market for a new safety if Gardner-Johnson is going to miss significant time. Vikings-Colts Trade Proposal Ships Towering WR to Minnesota

The Minnesota Vikings' receiving corps are in some danger at the moment with Justin Jefferson's hamstring injury and Jordan Addison's three-game suspension, but a trade with the Indianapolis Colts could solve their problems. Bleacher Report's Alex Kay has proposed a deal in which the Vikings would land wide receiver Alec Pierce from the Colts in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, which would represent one heck of a get for Minnesota. More news: Ravens Cut Candidate Somehow Named Potential Breakout Player "The Vikings fit the bill as a potential suitor for Pierce, given the squad is dealing with a three-week suspension to Jordan Addison and could be without Jalen Nailor while he nurses a hand injury," Kay wrote. "Pierce was a second-round pick in 2022 and still has plenty of potential, but the poor quarterback play in Indy has limited his contributions. A change of scenery could see him blossom as a tertiary option in Minnesota." The 6-foot-3 Pierce was terrific in 2024, hauling in 37 receptions for 824 yards and seven touchdowns. That was good for a robust average of 22.3 yards per catch, which led the NFL. Head coach Kevin O'Connell of the Minnesota Vikings stands on the field prior to an NFC Wild Card game against the Los Angeles why would Indianapolis trade him? Well, Pierce is preparing to enter the final year of his contract, and the Colts have a surplus of receivers that includes Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs and Adonai Mitchell. That could make Pierce expendable, especially with Indianapolis potentially headed toward a soft rebuild (at least as far as its quarterback situation is concerned). The problem for the Vikings, though, is that they almost certainly wouldn't be able to re-sign Pierce next offseason. They've already paid Jefferson, and Addison becomes eligible for an extension following 2025. Nailor is slated to hit free agency next March, as well. More news: Former NFL Star Blasts Aaron Rodgers, Pittsburgh Steelers So does Minnesota feel it will be good enough to contend with J.J. McCarthy under center this year? Maybe if the right weapons are around him, and bringing Pierce into the fold could very well give the Vikings the most enviable group of skill position players in football. Minnesota does appear to be in the market for a wide out, so we will see if anything comes of this. For more on the Vikings and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
