Clemson is only focused on USC-Upstate as they prepare for the Clemson Regional
Clemson's lopsided 14-4 loss to North Carolina in Sunday's ACC Championship Game isn't lingering in the minds of the Tigers — not with the NCAA Tournament just days away.
'Disappointing as (Sunday) was, you just got to flush that and move on,' head coach Erik Bakich said. 'By the time we got on the bus leaving Durham, we had already turned the page.'
Despite falling short of a second ACC title in three years, Clemson (41-14) has secured the No. 11 national seed and top billing in the Clemson regional. The Tigers will host No. 2 seed West Virginia, No. 3 seed Kentucky, and No. 4 seed USC-Upstate at Doug Kingsmore Stadium starting Friday.
Clemson opens regional play at 6 p.m. against USC-Upstate, a team Bakich is plenty familiar with. The Tigers have beaten the Spartans twice this season — 12-6 in February and 11-1 in April — and Bakich is 4-1 against Upstate since arriving at Clemson.
'Our focus is not going any further than Friday and USC-Upstate,' Bakich said. 'They have a great club. First-year coach, back in the tournament, coming off the dog pile. They can really hit. Dangerous lineup.'
USC-Upstate enters on a six-game win streak after capturing the Big South Tournament in Kane Sweeney's debut season. Meanwhile, West Virginia and Kentucky will face off in Friday's noon game, with the winners set to meet Saturday.
While Bakich acknowledged Kentucky's aggressive style and West Virginia's consistency, he emphasized that scouting reports would wait. 'We haven't really looked at anything in-depth or in detail,' he said. 'We will.'
For now, the Tigers are focused squarely on Friday night.

Oklahoma QB John Mateer named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list
The buzz surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners' new starting quarterback, John Mateer. He's been included on a number of watch lists this offseason and is a dark horse candidate to contend for the Heisman Trophy. On Wednesday, Mateer was included on another watch list, this time for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award goes to the offensive player of the year who played his high school or college football in the state of Texas or was born in Texas. Oklahoma Sooners quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray won the awards in back-to-back seasons during their Heisman runs in 2017 and 2018. The two were standout quarterbacks in Texas high school football and started their careers at universities in the state of Texas before transferring to Oklahoma. Mateer could be on a similar path with the Sooners in 2025. Though there are more unknowns on the offensive side of the ball than there were when OU entered the 2017 or 2018 seasons, Mateer could very well be the answer to a lot of the questions with his dual-threat ability. The former three-star quarterback has been lauded for his ability to make plays when things break down and for his competitive drive. And if he's able to translate that to Oklahoma and the SEC, Mateer could end the season in the running for a number of postseason awards. Hugh Freeze praises Auburn RB Jeremiah Cobb: 'He's got a good football IQ'
Auburn football will be without 1,000-yard rusher Jarquez Hunter following his departure to the NFL. However, the Tigers will be far from shorthanded as a diverse group of running backs is set to emerge. This year's back group could be the deepest it has been in a few years, due to the many ways each player can attack opposing defenses. One of those players is junior Jeremiah Cobb, who received quite a bit of praise from his head coach this week. During his weekly press conference, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze spoke on the versatility that Cobb brings to the offense and how it could lead to a monster season. 'I think he's going to have a breakout year," Freeze said of Cobb this week. "We went through three or four days last week when all our slot guys were down so we threw him back out there like we did last year some. He's got a good football IQ and has that capacity for us to use him in a lot of different ways, whether that's in the pass game. Now he's struggling a little in the pass game because he still has that brace on his thumb, and catching is not real natural, but I think he gets out of that first of next week. He's very versatile, we can use him in a lot of ways. I expect him to have a breakout year. He probably has the best burst in the open field of any that we have.' Cobb has shown flashes of versatility during his two previous seasons on the Plains in the run game, pass game, and return game. In two years, Cobb has built a stat line of 314 rushing yards and 92 receiving yards in a situational role, and 444 return yards, a skill he added to his belt last season. Freeze calls Cobb the "most experienced" back in Auburn's stable and says that he, as well as Damari Alston, has the best understanding of the offense, especially in the RPO game. How does Freeze view the other available backs? True freshman Omar Mabson and UConn transfer Durell Robinson are both climbing the ranks as well. "I'm excited about Omar (Mabson II), also, and Durell (Robinson)," Freeze said. "Alvin (Henderson) is going to be fine. He's been dinged up and hasn't been able to get many reps the last four or five practices, so hard to say much about that. But I think Damari and Cobb and Omar and Durell are all getting better every practice.' Depsite having great variety, Auburn's running back group will enter the season as the greatest question mark on offense. However, it appears that the mystery surrounding the group will disappear quickly. Auburn faces Baylor on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. CT in Waco, Texas.
