Edwyn Collins: Nation Shall Speak Unto Nation review – the sense of an ending

The Guardian14-03-2025
Recorded at his home studio in Helmsdale in north Scotland with musicians including his son, William, there is a sense that Edwyn Collins's 10th solo album – and his fifth since two life-changing strokes in 2005 – is about homecoming, coming full circle, marking the end of a journey. Quite apart from the explicit references to the village in which he lives on The Bridge Hotel, he sings elsewhere of 'winding my way back home'.
There's also a sense of reckoning. The title track alludes to the speech problems caused by his ill health: 'Back when the words came easily/ I had the answer to everything', something also touched upon on Knowledge. Indeed, his lyrics are equally thoughtful and thought-provoking throughout, the musicianship sensitive and never seizing the spotlight from his still distinctive baritone. Paper Planes and It Must Be Real are particularly beautifully realised; the rousing The Heart Is a Foolish Little Thing conceals rueful and tender sentiments. Collins has just announced a farewell tour for the autumn. One has to hope this compassionate, empathetic record is not his farewell album too.

Kate Middleton issues emotional message in new video released during summer break

The Princess of Wales took to Instagram to share the latest installment of her Mother Nature series, which focuses on celebrating the seasons in the UK. The Princess of Wales has taken a break from her summer holidays to release a fresh video as part of her Mother Nature series, which centres on savouring precious moments, treasuring family, and delighting in the summer months. ‌ The Princess kicked off this series in Spring as a tribute to the shifting seasons throughout the UK, serving as both a reminder and contemplation of the wonder and intricacy of human life. Kate's latest summer instalment, which appeared on Instagram, stays grounded in the natural world whilst also showcasing heartfelt human connections and celebrating the happiness found in togetherness. ‌ The release of the Princess of Wales' fresh video coincides with Britain's summer peak, as large parts of England bask in scorching temperatures this week. Although neither Princess Kate nor Prince William appear on screen, the video features Kate's voice as she delivers an emotional narrative about making the most of summer alongside friends and loved ones, reports the Mirror. ‌ In the clip, she declares: "Summer is a season for abundance. Just as the flowers bloom and the fruits ripen, we too are reminded of our own potential for growth. It is the time to ignite our inner fire and explore our own creativity, passions, and dreams. "As we bask in the sunlit hours, friends and families come together; playing, connecting, being present. Embracing the joy to be found in even the most fleeting of moments and shared experiences. "Our lives flourish when we cherish the bonds of love and friendship. So open your hearts; sing, dance, play. The days are still long, so simply love, and be loved." The social media clip was also endorsed by Princess Kate, with the caption stating: "Our lives flourish when we cherish the bonds of love and friendship. It has never been more important to appreciate the value of one another, and of Mother Nature. Here's to Summer. C." ‌ The touching footage was captured by Will Warrs and the Kensington Palace communications team across recent months, featuring scenes from across Britain, including Sheffield, Bradford, North Wales and Anglesey and the southern coastline. The ballet dancers appearing in the film are from The Royal Ballet School, who previously performed at Princess Kate's annual Christmas Carol Service in 2024. ‌ The earlier instalment in the series captured the Spring period, showcasing previously unseen footage of her and Prince William marking their wedding anniversary on the Isle of Mull in April. Nature has been central to Kate's cancer recovery, with the princess now in remission after her diagnosis over a year ago. In the footage, William and Kate appear with their backs turned to the camera, arms wrapped around each other in an embrace, taking in the landscape.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Why Mrs Cleese's sharp memory could come in handy for John

While the 640-year-old Duke of York title is traditionally given to second sons of the monarch, a senior courtier suggests William is currently 'inclined to let it die' thanks to his scandal-ridden uncle. 'Just as no one will ever again be Duke of Windsor,' I'm told. 'George will eventually become Prince of Wales and Charlotte will succeed her beloved great aunt Anne as Princess Royal. Something new will have to be found for Louis.' Tentative plans this year for a joint birthday celebration behind closed doors for Andrew and big sister Anne were apparently vetoed. With Anne's 75th on Friday and Andrew having already turned 65, my mole reports: 'It was contemplated by the King but ruled out after objections from William. Anne may be supportive of her exiled brother but the heir to the throne isn't.' Revelations President Trump wanted to date Dame Emma Thompson immediately after her divorce from Sir Kenneth Branagh confirms Donald's penchant for newly available English roses. He also bombarded the late Princess of Wales with 'massive bouquets of flowers' when the ink was barely dry on her divorce from Charles. After Diana expressed alarm, presenter pal Selina Scott advised: 'Throw them in the bin.' Publicly mourning the passing of pet duck Magda – his cheeky tribute to Australian actress Magda Szubanski – Sir Sam Neill delights in naming his farmyard animals after Hollywood colleagues. Sir Sam's former co-star Michael Fassbender (who famously appeared fully naked in the film Shame) regrettably failed to see the funny side on hearing of 'Fassbender' the cockerel. Acknowledging memory issues as he approaches 86, John Cleese cheerfully says of fourth spouse Jennifer (both pictured), who is more than 30 years his junior: 'I have a wife with a very good memory and she tells me what I was doing the day before.' Confusing the various blonde Mrs Cleeses down the decades threatens to become an occupational hazard. Bowing out as the Earl of Grantham after the upcoming third Downton movie instalment, frisky housewives' favourite Hugh Bonneville prepares to make his lucrative debut on the cruise-ship circuit. 'I'm absolutely thrilled to be sailing with Cunard,' insists canny Hugh, separated from Mrs Bonneville. 'I look forward to sharing a few stories... and exploring the Caribbean with my fellow guests.' Ker-ching! Reflecting on feuding with Blue Peter presenter John Noakes after barring him from using his famous canine co-star in adverts, the show's late boss Biddy Baxter mischievously pointed out plenty of viewers 'liked Shep more than they liked John'.

Prince Andrew's hidden motive for 'nasty remarks about Kate Middleton'

Royal biographer Andrew Lownie has shared his view on the Duke of York's alleged 'unkind' comments about the Princess of Wales, despite her being the 'royal family's saving grace' A royal biographer has spoken out about Prince Andrew's alleged 'rude' and 'unkind' comments about the Princess of Wales, leading to claims the Duke of York has a 'tense' relationship with his nephew, Prince William. ‌ Biographer Andrew Lownie, who has penned the explosive new book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, said that Andrew's alleged comments about Kate came from a place of jealousy. ‌ Speaking out about the details in his book, Lownie said that the claims "surprised" him, as he expected the Duke of York to have more "respect" for William than to be "nasty about his wife". It comes after Prince Andrew's shock act of defiance as he breaks cover after brutal allegations. ‌ It is not known exactly what comments were made by Andrew against his nephew's wife, but Lownie believes the jabs led to a major breakdown of the relationship between the two men. Lownie told OK! Magazine: "I can't see how anyone could make unkind comments about Kate when she's been the family's saving grace. It surprised me, but people do get jealous. I'd have thought Prince Andrew would respect William as future king though.' ‌ The royal biographer cited the incident as a key moment that William turned his back on his uncle, saying the future king has been left 'frustrated' by Andrew's actions over the years. "William has a very strong sense of public duty and is doing his best to keep the show on the road," Lownie said. "He's all about doing things the right way and has enough on his plate without having to think about his uncle." He added: "Everyone is pulling together - Charles, Anne, Edward, William and others - but the whole side has been let down by Prince Andrew." ‌ According to a source who spoke to the author, there has been friction between William and Andrew for years, which began when the disgraced Duke's actions started to impact the public's view of the Firm. The book has also claimed that when he becomes King, William will be eager to evict Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson out of the Royal Lodge, where the pair have lived for years despite the disapproval of King Charles. ‌ The source is quoted in the bombshell book, saying: "He [William] also loathes Sarah, Andrew's ex-wife, and can't wait for the day when his father throws them both out. If Charles doesn't, I guarantee you the first thing William does when he eventually becomes king is to get them evicted." Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the claims. Rumours of the tension between Prince William and Prince Andrew have long swirled. Earlier this year, Andrew attended the royal family's Easter Sunday service at St George's Chapel. William, Kate and their three children did not attend the service, as they instead chose to extend their break in Norfolk having just returned from a family skiing holiday. ‌ A royal source said at the time: "William has no time for his uncle. This Easter was about spending time with his own family, but he would far prefer a situation where he doesn't have to spend time with him." The source went on to claim that Andrew's relationship with Prince William, and also with King Charles, remains "incredibly strained". A senior royal source added: "The Duke seems to be in the habit of being a significant contributor of headaches for the family and many have run out of patience with him."
