Green light for RM450mil Melaka flood mitigation project

The Star04-06-2025
THE Federal Government has approved RM450mil in funds for the Sungai Baru Flood Mitigation Plan in Masjid Tanah, Melaka, to address recurring floods in the area.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the project would span a 15km-stretch from Sungai Durian Daun to the mouth of Sungai Kuala Baru.
He said it would also include the construction of four flood retention ponds in Kampung Londang, Kampung Jeram, Kampung Lubuk Redan and Taman Gamelan.
'This is a long-term initiative to tackle the flood problems affecting Masjid Tanah,' he told Bernama after visiting a Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) pump house as part of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat engagement programme for the Lendu constituency at Taman Masjid Tanah Ria.
Also present at the event were State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad, state science, technology, innovation and digital communications committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan and Lendu assemblyman Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
For short-term flood prevention, Ab Rauf said DID was implementing RM3.3mil worth of state-funded projects, including the installation of pumps, construction of pump houses and compact substations as well as carrying out river maintenance works.
Two existing flood retention ponds at Durian Daun and Solok Duku were also undergoing rehabilitation at a combined cost of RM1.85mil, which is expected to be completed by December.
Separately, Ab Rauf urged the state's stage bus operator to take greater responsibility for safety standards, calling for improved driver training following a series of fatal public transport accidents.
He noted that several incidents were linked to negligent driving, resulting in loss of life.

Johor has enough water for industry use to last beyond 2050, says MB

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor has enough water for industry usage to last beyond 2050, says Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi (pic). The Johor Mentri Besar has hit out against certain people attempting to scare off investors by alleging that the state could not sufficiently supply water and electricity supply to industries. 'Such claims are slanderous and malicious towards the state government's efforts to attract international investments, particularly under the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. 'Our initiatives are carried out comprehensively with the Federal Government to provide the best facilities for investors,' he said in his opening speech at the launch of the MBW Innexus Industrial City development on Wednesday (Aug 20). He said the state has also set up a special taskforce involving three state executive councillors - state investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han, housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor and works, transportation, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh. 'When companies want to build data centres in Johor, we will assess them first. If there is not enough electricity and water supply, their applications will not be approved. 'But as we are all informed, our resources in Johor are sufficient because of our ongoing efforts,' he said. Among the efforts that he highlighted was working with Indah Water Konsortium to use alternative water sources for data centres. He added that Johor has a long-term plan with the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry to ensure sufficient water supply until at least 2050. 'Johor is very serious about bringing in investments and we will ensure that investors who choose the state feel secure as we have adequate water and electricity supply. 'To those trying to stir up issues, I hope they stop because what we want is not only to develop Johor's economy but also to create an impact for the country,' he said.

Water, energy supply key to attracting investors, says PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: The ability to provide sufficient water and energy supply is among the main attractions for investors in the semiconductor, data centre, and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors in Malaysia, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said this was further strengthened by the country's capacity to provide professional manpower expertise, which was a key strategic requirement for investors. "These two aspects (water and energy) are very strategic, and I wish to emphasise that we will not be able to maintain Malaysia's credibility as a peaceful and competent nation if we cannot resolve matters related to water and energy. "It is not only about providing (water and electricity facilities to investors), but also about how we manage the (prices) of water and energy at reasonable levels without burdening the people,' he said when officiating the Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant (LRA2) here on Wednesday (Aug 20). Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister. Meanwhile, Anwar said Malaysia continued to face wastage issues, particularly involving Non-Revenue Water (NRW) due to usage practices and weaknesses in the old piping system. He said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the minister responsible, had raised the matter numerous times during Cabinet meetings, and following discussions, it would be made one of the priorities under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The Prime Minister said in terms of water management, ensuring comfort and meeting the people's needs remained the government's main priority. "How can a country with an abundance of water, with floods two or three times a year, still face water shortages? That means something is wrong, not because of Allah's will, but due to a lack of human ingenuity. "Take Jordan, for example. They may only have heavy rain two or three times a year, but they are able to store water for times of need. That is why our technology must not only focus on advancement but also ensure water-saving measures are in place," said Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister.- Bernama
