Tropical storm Dexter could be next as Florida faces flood threats

India Today5 days ago
A drenching weather system sweeping across Florida on Tuesday has not yet reached tropical depression status, but the National Weather Service (NWS) warned it could develop into one later this week.If named, the system would be called Tropical Storm Dexter, though it's expected to be far less dangerous than the fictional serial killer from the Florida-based crime drama Dexter.advertisementAccording to the NWS, a low-pressure area off Florida's east coast became more defined as it moved west across the peninsula. The system has brought heavy rainfall, raising concerns about flash flooding through midweek. Forecasters said environmental conditions in the northeastern and north-central Gulf are conducive to development into a tropical depression by later this week.
As reported by ABC News, the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is only six weeks in, yet three named storms, Andrea, Barry, and Chantal, have already formed. Andrea dissipated in the Atlantic last month, Barry caused heavy rainfall in eastern Mexico, and Chantal struck South Carolina, with its remnants causing deadly flooding in North Carolina. If the current system strengthens, Dexter would become the fourth named storm.STROM FORECAST AND PREDICTIONS The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) projects 13 to 19 named storms this season, with six to ten becoming hurricanes and up to five reaching major hurricane status.According to ABC News, researchers at Colorado State University estimate 17 named storms, including four potential major hurricanes with winds exceeding 110 mph (177 kph), as reported by ABC News.FLORIDA 'S NEW WEATHER MODIFICATION LAW RAISES CONCERNSAmid increased weather anxiety, Uthmeier, the Florida Attorney General, sent a warning to airports this week. Beginning in October, airports will be required to report any aircraft engaged in "weather modification" under new state legislation. The action comes after unsubstantiated social media accusations have sought to blame cloud seeding for fatal Texas floods during the Fourth of July weekend. Specialists have rebuffed the accusations, affirming there's no proof connecting the floods with weather manipulation."This material is sounding pretty ominous to me," Uthmeier said Tuesday, noting that failure to comply with the new reporting requirements would result in penalties, possibly even criminal charges.- EndsMust Watch

City sees significant surge in UTIs & fungal infections during monsoon

Pune: Clinics across the city have reported a significant rise in fungal skin infections and urinary tract infections in the current monsoon. Doctors attribute the rise to prolonged dampness, slow-drying clothes and extended periods in rain-soaked garments. High humidity in the city and overcast skies have hindered the proper drying of clothes and personal layers. These situations created favourable conditions for seasonal infections. "There has been a 30% spike in cases of fungal infection in the last few weeks. Many patients claimed they didn't have the option to change wet clothes while they were out. Such situations made them prone to infections," said Dr Sachin Khandikar, a city-based dermatologist. He added that excessive humidity has created ideal conditions for fungal infections such as ringworm, athlete's foot and candidiasis, which commonly affect skin folds like the groin, underarms, and spaces between the toes. "Sweating during the monsoon irritates the skin and creates an ideal environment for fungi and bacteria to grow. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NYC Hotel Smartphone Booking | Bookmark Now! | New York City Hotel Booking | Mill Canyon Road Click Here Undo Even something as simple as wearing damp socks for long can lead to fungal infections," she said. Additionally, doctors have been treating mild rashes such as tinea versicolor and yeast-related irritation, which typically present as red, itchy patches or discolored spots in areas which remain warm and covered. Urologists and gynecologists in the city have also observed a seasonal uptick in UTIs, affecting both men and women. Common symptoms include burning sensation while urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, lower abdominal pain and sometimes fever or cloudy urine. Dr Paresh Jariwala, an urologist, said, "Sudden weather changes can weaken the immune system. People also tend to drink less water in the rainy season, which leads to dehydration and increases the risk of UTIs. Damp conditions can cause sweat and bacteria to accumulate around intimate areas." Gynaecologist Dr Seema Mhatre emphasized the importance of preventive hygiene. "Changing damp clothes promptly and maintaining intimate hygiene is essential," she advised. However, experts caution against self-medication. "People often reach for over-the-counter antifungal creams or antibiotics at the first sign of a rash, but this can do more harm than good. Topical steroid creams or inappropriate medications may temporarily reduce symptoms, but can worsen the infection over time. It's important to get a proper medical diagnosis and follow prescribed treatment," Dr Singh added.

‘Profoundly grateful': Number of missing in deadly Texas floods drops from nearly 100 to 3; search operations to continue

AP file photo The number of people initially reported missing in the hardest-hit area of the Texas floods has dropped sharply from nearly 100 to 3 as the majority have now been located and confirmed safe, reported officials on Saturday. Three people are still missing in Kerr County and three more people are unaccounted for in Travis County and one more person has been listed as missing in Burnet County, as per the most recent update this week, reports ABC News. "We are profoundly grateful to the more than 1,000 local, state, and federal authorities who have worked tirelessly in the wake of the devastating flood that struck our community," stated Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice. "Thanks to their extraordinary efforts, the number of individuals previously listed as missing has dropped from over 160 to three." "Through extensive follow-up work among state and local agencies, many individuals who were initially reported as missing have been verified as safe and removed from the list," the city of Kerrville stated in a news release. "This has been an ongoing effort as investigators worked diligently to verify reports of missing persons and confirm their status." Officials have confirmed that search operations will continue till missing persons are accounted for. Kerr County bore the brunt of the devastation when the Guadalupe River rose 20 feet in just 90 minutes during the early hours of July 4th, claiming the lives of 27 children and counselors at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp situated along the riverbank. Nearly 135 people lost their lives in the deadly flash floods with Kerr County alone accounting for approximately 107 fatalities, including 70 adults and 37 children, reports the New York Post. The flooding far exceeded the severity of a 100-year event as defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, experts said. Striking swiftly in the middle of the night, it took many by surprise in a county that had no warning system in place. US president Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abott have defended local authorities amid growing scrutiny over their response over early warnings of heavy rainfall and initial reports of flash flooding, reports AP.
