British Open Round 3 live updates, leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler breaks open 4-shot lead after Saturday

Yahoo17 hours ago
It took him a little while to get going, but Scottie Scheffler broke things open at Royal Portrush on Saturday afternoon.
Scheffler, after starting the day with six straight pars, ended up posting a 4-under 67 in the third round of the British Open. That gave the top-ranked golfer in the world a massive four-shot lead entering the final day of play in Northern Ireland.
Scheffler got off to a slow start while just about everyone else around him was scoring. But finally, thanks to an eagle at the seventh that he immediately backed up with a birdie, he took off. Scheffler slowly separated himself from the rest of the field. He even made a ridiculous par save on the back nine that helped preserve the rare bogey-free round.
Matt Fitzpatrick started the day in the final group with Scheffler, but he struggled to hang in there with him. Fitzpatrick made three bogeys on the back nine and ended up falling to 9-under. Haotong Li took his place in second, but he's going to start four shots back of Scheffler after he bogeyed his final hole. He'll be the first man from China to play in the final tee time in the final round of a major.
McIlroy jumped up eight spots on the leaderboard with his 5-under 66, too. While that got him to 8-under — he's tied up with Tyrrell Hatton, Chris Gotterup and Harris English entering the final round — he's still six shots. If he's going to make a run at winning his home major, it's going to have to happen quickly on Sunday.
Scheffler is searching for what would be his fourth career major championship win, and his first British Open victory. He's a perfect 9-0 the last nine times he's held the outright lead after three rounds on the PGA Tour, too, including at his other three major wins.

Tierney enjoys 'emotional' return to Celtic Park

Kieran Tierney enjoyed an "emotional" return to Celtic Park in Saturday's friendly against Newcastle United, with the biggest cheer in a 4-0 victory reserved for the defender. The 28-year-old Scotland international was introduced 10 minutes into the second half, having made his last home appearance for the Scottish champions on 6 April 2019. Back at his first club after six years with Arsenal, he told Celtic TV: "Amazing. I didn't know what to expect but that was just brilliant. What a feeling. "I was quite emotional actually, running on to the park like that. It was a great day for me." Tierney, who won four league titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups in his first spell, set up the fourth goal when he crossed for Liam Scales to head home after playing a one-two with Reo Hatate. "They're a great team so it just shows the quality that we have got," he added. "When we play like that we can give anyone a game. Some of the goals we scored were brilliant." 'More to come in' at Celtic after Yamada - Rodgers Tierney 'nothing to prove' over fitness at Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers sent Tierney on just moments before making another 10 substitutions. "I wanted him to get a specific welcome back," he explained. "Just to get him back here at his age where he could easily be playing at the top end of the Premier League, to get a player of that level and that desire to play for Celtic is amazing for us. "So, it was a great moment and another connection with him and the support. "And then you see when he's on there, he's playing against Anthony Elanga, who's a brilliant signing for Newcastle. "But Kieran's got pace and power. And then you see how he created the goal with that explosive speed and the quality." The story of 'the most famous bench in golf'

For almost 15 years it has been dubbed the most famous bench in golf. Sitting proudly on the sixth tee at Royal Portrush, with views of the beach below and coast for miles either side, it has gone viral at this year's Open. Some of the sport's biggest names - including Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm - have all been pictured resting up at the back end of the course. The inscription reads: "Jim McDowell - from just a few of his many golfing friends to mark the occasion of his 70th birthday". But what is the story behind it? It involves camaraderie and friendship, something at the heart of golf. "Dad's not with us any more but he used to play every Wednesday at Royal Portrush with a group of hackers," said Jim's daughter, Zoe. "They had the best time and they would have a wee regroup at the halfway house and play pretty well on the back nine. "They eventually all became friends and it was a really eclectic mix of people that Dad brought together, so they decided on his 70th they would chip in and get him a bench." Zoe said the secretary of Royal Portrush at the time picked the location on the iconic sixth tee and it was unveiled as a surprise to Jim for his big day. "She knew the lie of the land and we think she picked the best spot," Zoe added. "It was a surprise for him and it's been a joy to enjoy it ever since. "Dad was really excited because he was one of the few people to get a bench while they were still alive. He would often sit on it with his friends and have the craic. "There have been a lot of stories and family memories from the bench, and now it's been amazing to see so many people from this Open enjoying it." Claire, Jim's other daughter, said her father "would have absolutely loved" seeing some of the sport's biggest names enjoy his bench at the Open. The sisters added that they come and visit the bench every year to reflect on memories of their dad. In Claire's words, "most people go to a grave. We go to a bench". "We were so excited and we know Dad would have got such a kick from it," she said while enjoying the Open with Zoe on Saturday. "He would have loved it if he was still here. "It's been a bit mad, but we always thought it was the best bench in golf. There was never any dispute around that for us, it's pretty cool." The bench is a legacy of friendship - in a way that only a sport like golf can provide - and now others can enjoy a moment of tranquillity, reflection or craic - including some of the sport's biggest names.
