Danielle Laidley: Use of Sean Darcy, Luke Jackson and Patrick Voss integral part of Fremantle's success

This Fremantle side has evolved at a rate of knots in 2025. The most interesting aspect I have found is the use of Sean Darcy, Luke Jackson and the development of Patrick Voss — and it's an integral part of their success.
Darcy was the number one ruck for his 13 games in 2024, with Luke Jackson the second ruck/key forward. The other two regular key forwards were Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss.
Matt Taberner played six games and Patrick Voss seven, only when one of main cast were injured. There were varied machinations of the ruck/forward set up when this occurred.
Fast forward to 2025 and has the dynamic changed massively. Darcy and Jackson share the ruck duties, then the latter moves to a genuine onballer.
It's a different look for the midfield group — Jackson at 199cm is a ground ball hunter, his clearances, contested ball, score involvements and inside 50's have increased in 2025.
His contested marks around the ground have increased, yet he is just marginally below his marks inside 50 averages from 2024 and is spending significantly less time stationed inside 50.
Jackson has found himself in the Champion Data top-five rated players for a significant part of the season.
The other significant flow on effect has been the makeup of the three tall forwards, which coach Justin Longmuir likes to play — Treacy (20 games, 35 goals), Amiss (20 games, 28 goals) and Voss (16 games, 28 goals), who has developed his game and maturity with the speed of a bullet in 2025.
None of these three key forwards are playing as a back-up ruckman, which is usually the case in most teams. This has allowed more time to synchronise them all playing together continuously and it is showing.
It's just not the goals from Voss, it's his ferocious attack on the contest, it's his chase down tackles. For me, it seems Treacy has his fingerprints all over Voss and what a great mentor that would be.
There is more to Voss than his physical presence. What he did against Collingwood's captain Darcy Moore in round 19 is difficult to do. His football smarts, positioning and know how scored him a bag of goals and the team were able to execute the plan on Moore.
On the weekend there was a different plan for Voss' role, going to Carlton defender Jacob Weitering. He wanted to play on Treacy, so there was a merry-go-round, which causes confusion and helps quell Weitering's intercept game.
There was an example of the ball coming inside forward 50, where Voss stayed with Weitering, laying a smart partial block causing confusion, allowing Treacy to take the mark and goal.
The excitement from Voss and his celebration for Treacy was something to behold, its what coaches, love when players live, breathe and value their role.
As the game progressed Treacy did the same for Voss, and yes we saw the same excitement from Josh Treacy. It's gold.
From very much a bit part player in 2024, it's been quite the sliding door moment for Voss, as he has become an integral part of this team and the word is he has worked extremely hard on his game.
Just Imagine if Jackson doesn't become the ruck/midfielder and stays as the ruck/forward, would we get the pleasure to see this young man strut his stuff every weekend?
And on a separate note — Treacy is 23, Amiss and Voss are 22, so there's plenty more to be seen. Stay the course Fremantle fans.

Hawthorn vs Collingwood teams: Breust, Mitchell among key changes

Hawthorn has recalled veteran Luke Breust for its must-win clash against Collingwood on Thursday night. The crafty forward has not played in the senior side since round 9 and has played just five AFL games this year. But he is one of two inclusions into the side, and will likely be deployed as the substitute, in a game against the Magpies. The Hawks will also recall Changkuoth Jiath for the clash after a strong VFL performance last week, replacing Harry Morrison on a wing. Hawthorn will be without Will Day, but instead of replacing him with a midfielder the coaching staff have opted to promote James Worpel from the substitute role last week to a spot in the best 22. Collingwood has made three changes for the clash as the Magpies desperately try to cling onto top spot on the ladder. The Pies dropped off the top perch with a loss to Brisbane last week, but have stocked their backline with experienced duo Billy Frampton and Jeremy Howe. Tom Mitchell has also been recalled and will face his old side, with Charlie Dean and Oleg Markov dropped for the clash. Bobby Hill made his return to the AFL last week but will miss again, this time due to illness. AFL 2025: Carlton make Michael Voss call after marathon Blues board meeting

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. The future of Carlton coach Michael Voss remains uncertain, with a call on his 2026 status not made at a marathon five-hour board meeting. Voss remains in the job for now with only one top Blues figure commenting on Wednesday night. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? The coach left club HQ around 5:30pm AEST with the meeting completed around 7:30pm. Michael Voss leaves Ikon Park while the board meet. Picture: Glenn McFarlane It held extra stakes for Voss in the aftermath of Melbourne's sacking of Simon Goodwin. Part of the Demons' reasoning for axing their premiership coach on Tuesday was to get to market and ensure they can complete the hiring process before the off-season. And footy insiders believe the Blues could yet be pushed into making an early call on Voss, who's now viewed as the most under-pressure coach in the AFL. Seven's Mitch Cleary declared from Ikon Park on Wednesday evening Voss' future is 'well and truly on a knife's edge, despite holding a contract for next year'. Voss has a 44-42-1 record as Carlton coach but after 2023's miracle run to a preliminary final, the Blues have failed to record a September win despite premiership aspirations, and will not play finals in 2025. Goodwin presented to Melbourne's board at a meeting last week, which then decided to fire him a week later. And while it's been expected the Blues will wait to make a call until new chief executive Graham Wright takes over on August 15, the Demons' position in the market could force the club's hand. The club also has major decisions to make regarding football boss Brad Lloyd, whose future is uncertain, and their assistant coaching panel. Voss still Carlton coach after Blues board meets

Michael Voss remains Carlton coach after a lengthy board meeting at Ikon Park where his job was on the agenda. A day after Melbourne sacked premiership coach Simon Goodwin, the Blues board met for a scheduled meeting on Wednesday that lasted almost five hours. Voss left Carlton's headquarters at 5.30pm, driving past a waiting media pack while the board continued talking inside. When entering Ikon Park for the meeting, Carlton vice-president Patty Kinnersly gave a brief comment. "Every day is important for a football coach," she told the Seven Network when asked about Voss. Legendary Carlton player Greg Williams, who is now the club's football director, left the meeting alongside Kinnersly but declined to comment when approached. Voss was already under immense pressure following a horror season that will see them miss finals for the first time since 2022. But with the Demons to almost certainly sound out premiership coaches Adam Simpson and John Longmire, it could prompt Carlton to act quicker than expected. Blues president Robert Priestley six weeks ago declared Voss would coach out the rest of this season, but would not guarantee he would see out the end of his contract in 2026. After making a preliminary final in 2023, then an elimination final last year, Carlton had high hopes of ending a 30-year premiership drought. Instead, their fortunes have crumbled and they sit 13th with a 7-13 record. Third-generation Blue Jack Silvagni has met with Carlton's two biggest rivals - Collingwood and Essendon - about a move in the off-season. Star forward Charlie Curnow has toyed with the idea of playing elsewhere but his bumper contract until the end of 2029 would make it extremely difficult to leave. Carlton host finals-bound Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, with Voss to give his weekly media conference on Friday.
