Breaking down the Lions options to replace Frank Ragnow now that the center is retiring
The stunning news that center Frank Ragnow is retiring from football means major changes are coming to the Detroit Lions offensive line. Ragnow has been a high-end fixture in the middle of the Detroit line since he was drafted in the first round in 2018.
Replacing Ragnow will not be easy. He's a three-time second-team All-Pro and has earned Pro Bowl status in four of the last five seasons, including 2024. The Lions aren't caught completely off-guard, however. They have some options to replace Ragnow in the pivot.
The most likely solution is rookie Tate Ratledge. Selected in the second round, Ratledge played right guard at Georgia, but he has taken nearly all the first-team center reps throughout Lions OTAs and rookie minicamp. Ratledge noted he earned reps as the backup center at Georgia when he spoke to the media at rookie minicamp earlier this spring.
The other most prominent option is for veteran Graham Glasgow to slide back to center. Glasgow has been Ragnow's primary backup since rejoining the Lions in 2023, while also serving as a starting guard. Glasgow's play fell off considerably in 2024 while playing left guard, but the soon-to-be 33-year-old has NFL starting experience at center during his three-year stint with the Denver Broncos, as well as spot starts in Detroit.
The Lions also have centers Kingsley Eguakun and Michael Niese in reserve on the current 90-man roster. Niese played 33 snaps at center in emergency duty last year, his second season in Detroit. Eguakun, an undrafted rookie from Florida in 2024, got the bulk of the work at second-team center behind Ratledge in Friday's OTA session.
Colby Sorsdal has also taken some practice reps at center as he attempts to stick on the roster in his third season. The 2023 fifth-round pick has unsuccessfully bounced between right tackle and guard, and moving to center could be his ticket to more significance.

Texans' C.J. Gardner-Johnson doesn't hold back on thoughts surrounding offseason trade

Texans' C.J. Gardner-Johnson doesn't hold back on thoughts surrounding offseason trade C.J. Gardner-Johnson is happy to be a member of the Houston Texans, but that doesn't mean he's over his departure from the Philadelphia Eagles. Garnder-Johnson, the centerpiece of the Texans' biggest offseason move built around trading former first-round pick Kenyon Green, admitted he didn't take kindly to the deal initially. One year after helping the Eagles win their Super Bowl, he was off to a new team in a new locker room for the fourth straight offseason. He believes that he's been slighted throughout his career to date, and the Eagles might be the worst at doing him dirty. "I feel highly disrespected, but it's a business," Gardner-Johnson told KPRC 2's Aaron Wilson. "Never was an All-Pro or Pro Bowl! Never! Led the league in interceptions. What more do you want?" Part of the reason Gardner-Johnson believes he was traded has nothing to do with his on-field play, but rather his antics after the hit. He was fined six times for a total of $101,298, per during the 2024 season, including two fines up to $45,000 from the Eagles' Week 16 loss to the Washington Commanders, which ended with him being ejected after multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. "People say, 'He's a hazard, he's this, he's that.' I never been no hazard, bro," Gardner-Johnson told Wilson. "They got no real issues on me. That black ball ain't going to work on me, because I got me a ring. I got me one." Signed to a three-year deal last offseason, Gardner-Johnson is under contract with Houston through 2026. He plans on proving his impact in Philadelphia by being the glue that keeps the Texans together en route to another AFC South division title. The good news for Texans fans? Since 2022, any team Gardner-Johnson has played for has made at least the conference championship, including the Detroit Lions in 2023. After being traded despite his impact on bringing a title to Philly, the veteran defensive back is now fueled to take DeMeco Ryans' defense to the next level. "I got three more championships in me," Gardner-Johnson said. "I'm probably going to win the next three. I'm going to get me another Super Bowl this year. Just watch." The Texans open the regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 7 at SoFi Stadium.

Ravens role player earns unexpected praise from former NFL coach Jon Gruden

Ravens role player earns unexpected praise from former NFL coach Jon Gruden One of the Ravens' role players caught the eye of former NFL coach Jon Gruden. Being one of the NFL's premier franchises means there are always eyes on the organization. The Baltimore Ravens are never short of a few admirers or interested parties. That comes with the territory as the reigning and defending two-time AFC North champions. Expectations are again soaring as another regular season is quickly approaching. There is star power all over this team, and in 2025, this proud organization is scheduled to play in primetime four times. They have an opportunity to make history by winning the division for a third consecutive season. That would be the first time any team has accomplished that feat since the AFC Central was transformed into a four-team division 23 years ago. In 2024, Baltimore placed 11 players on the AFC's Pro Bowl roster. Six players on the roster earned All-Pro designations. Much is expected of them, and the discussions about their potential are continual. One of the more recent came from a recent visitor. Jon Gruden names four Ravens as Gruden Grinders. One is a designee that you may not have expected. Jon Gruden isn't someone who can sneak around unnoticed, so when he attended Ravens' OTAs recently, news traveled. As expected, everyone wanted to know the nature of his visit, and head coach John Harbaugh explained. The former Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach seemingly hasn't ceased his analysis of the flock since leaving town. Recently, he added four familiar faces to his list of 'Gruden Grinders'. Three are no surprise to anyone. They're also 2024 Pro Bowlers: Patrick Ricard, Tyler Linderbaum, and Marlon Humphries. The other is a depth piece at wide receiver, fifth-year Raven Tylan Wallace. 54 games with one start is the extent of Wallace's regular-season resume. Injuries forced him into action to start both of Baltimore's postseason games last season. He snagged two of three targets during the Wild Card and Divisional Rounds. In total, he has tallied 308 yards and a touchdown during his career. It seems the opportunities will be limited in an offense featuring Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry, Rashod Bateman, Zay Flowers, Mark Andrews, and Isaiah Likely. Gruden, however, defines a 'Grinder' as "guys who love to play and compete", guys who "will play for nothing." Every team needs a couple of those guys, and having one in Wallace adds a fine insurance plan for the roster.
