HD Kumaraswamy calls caste census move 'historic', hails PM Modi's decision
JD(S) leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Wednesday described the central government's decision to include caste enumeration in the next census as "historic", saying it would provide authentic, scientific, and transparent caste data, moving away from 'politically motivated' state-level surveys that often lacked credibility and uniformity.

He expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it a "decisive and far-sighted action" in the nation's interest.
In a major move, the union government on Wednesday announced that caste enumeration would be part of the forthcoming national census, to be conducted in a "transparent" manner.
"A historic and visionary decision under the dynamic leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, caste enumeration will now be part of the national census for the first time since 1931," Kumaraswamy said in a post on 'X'.
He said this step would provide reliable and scientific data, replacing unverified state-level caste surveys.

"With this bold move, PM Modi has reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive governance and data-driven policymaking. This will enable better welfare planning, strengthen social justice, and help build a more equitable future," he added.
Announcing the decision of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that while the census is a central subject, some states had conducted caste surveys "non-transparently", creating doubts in society.
Karnataka conducted a Social and Educational Survey—popularly known as the 'caste census'—in 2015. The report is currently before the state cabinet for discussion.
Several communities, particularly Karnataka's two dominant ones—Vokkaligas and Veerashaiva-Lingayats—have strongly objected to the survey, calling it "unscientific" and demanding a fresh one.
Objections have also been raised by other sections of society, including voices from within the ruling Congress party.

Health Minister Ma. Subramanian has written to Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J.P. Nadda, expressing concerns about surrendering unfilled super speciality medical seats meant for in-service candidates to the All India Quota (AIQ) without conducting the mandatory second round of counselling at the State-level as it would deprive the candidates of their rightful opportunity to upgrade or participate in further counselling. This comes in the light of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) asking the State to revert the vacant in-service seats to the Medical Counselling Committee for the All India counselling, in a communication dated June 3. In a letter dated June 11, Mr. Subramanian told the Union Minister that this was a critical issue concerning super speciality seats reserved for in-service candidates from Tamil Nadu under NEET Super Specialty State quota. As per a Supreme Court order, 50% of seats in super specialty courses in government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are reserved exclusively for in-service candidates from the State. The NEET SS counselling for the State quota in-service candidates was completed on May 27. On May 29, the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee formally requested the DGHS to indicate to the State round two counselling schedule, to allow upgradation for the in-service candidates. Mr. Subramanian said that they have received numerous representations from in-service candidates seeking upgradation in the second round of State quota counselling. 'However, it has come to our notice that the process of surrendering the unfilled in-service seats to the AIQ is being considered, without conducting the mandatory second round of counselling at the State level. Such a move would effectively deprive our in-service candidates of their rightful opportunity to upgrade or participate in further counselling,' he said, adding that this would be contrary to the spirit and intent of the Supreme Court order. He sought the Union Minister's intervention to ensure that all 50% seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the State quota are retained and made available in round two of State-level NEET Super Speciality counselling.

All Seats Booked For Next 10 Days On Kashmir Train Days After Inauguration
Srinagar: It's a booking frenzy for trains to Kashmir. Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat train, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country by rail, the train service is seeing an unprecedented rush. Officials said tickets have been sold out and all the seats booked for the next 10 days. The Katra-Srinagar train has transformed connectivity to Kashmir valley. The rail link is an engineering marvel as people rush to experience a journey through the world's tallest rail bridge, the Chenab bridge, and some of the longest rail tunnels. The three-hour journey is a dream for many as it brings Kashmir valley closer to Jammu region and the rest of the country. The Rs 43,000 crore rail project was completed early this year, and PM Modi inaugurated it on Friday last. It has taken more than four decades to complete the massive project that has helped to replace Kashmir's remoteness and a sense of separation with proximity. Although there is no direct train service between Srinagar and Delhi, and passengers have to change trains at Katra, the rail link itself is seen as a major achievement towards integrating Kashmir valley with the rest of the country in a true sense. A day after inauguration, the railways formally started the train service between Katra and Srinagar. From day one, there has been a long waiting list as enthusiastic people tried to catch the first train. Officials said the rush is increasing by the day and two trains between Katra and Srinagar, and vice-versa are falling short to cope with the demand. Before the launch of this train service, the only link between Kashmir valley and the rest of the country was the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH 44), which would often get closed during rain and snowfall. After the launch of the rail service, Kashmir valley will no longer remain "cut off" from the rest of the country, come rain or snow. The rail link is largely paved by tunnels and bridges through the geologically challenging Himalayan mountains.
