What is the directive on sugar, salt labelling?
The Health Ministry has asked all government departments to prominently display the amount of oil and sugar content on popular Indian snacks like samosa, vada paav, kachori, pizza, and burger, stating that this information has to be shared in cafeterias, lobbies, meeting rooms, and even government stationery.
What is the proposal?
'We are proposing a display of sugar and oil boards initiative to promote healthier dietary habits in various settings. These boards serve as visual behavioural nudges in schools, offices, public institutions, etc., displaying key information about hidden fats and sugars in everyday foods,' said Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava in a recent letter to all ministries, departments, and autonomous bodies of the Union government.
It has also requested that all official stationery-letterheads, envelopes, notepads, folders, etc., and publications print health messages as daily reminders to reinforce the fight against obesity.
Why are warning labels being devised?
The Health Ministry says these warnings are designed to create awareness. 'The goal is to promote moderation, not restriction,'' it added.
According to the information released by the Health Ministry, India is currently facing an unprecedented rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which account for over 66% of all deaths across the country.
With the rapidly changing demographic and epidemiological landscape, the burden of NCDs such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, and cancers has become a public health challenge, particularly among individuals over the age of 30, it noted.
Pariksha Rao, director of nutrition and medical affairs at The Good Bug, a private venture in the wellness industry, points out that too much sodium, added sugar, refined oils, and sugar-sweetened drinks, often disguised as healthy options, can derail even the best diets. 'These contribute directly to the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and poor metabolic health. At the same time, many people fall short on essential nutrients by not getting enough fibre, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, or fermented foods that support gut health,' she adds. Functional snacks, which promise health benefits, also add to the problem.
How is the nutrient value of food calculated?
Nutrient values of foods are calculated by conducting laboratory assessment of prepared foods and are represented on a per 100g basis for ease of understanding. It considers total sugar, saturated fat, and salt levels. Where lab-based nutrient analysis is not available/feasible, evaluations are based on aggregating the nutritional values of ingredients available in the Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT) published by the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Nutrition-Hyderabad (ICMR-NIN). Foods are usually evaluated for their healthiness using validated nutrient profiling models.
The recently released ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024, made an attempt to indicate high fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) foods as foods in which calories from total sugar exceed 10% of total energy, calories from added fat/oil exceed 15% of total energy, and salt content is more than 625 mg per 100g of solid food, explains Bharati Kulkarni, director at ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad.
She adds that the NIN supports the Centre's initiative to create public consciousness about HFSS foods as a step toward addressing the rising rates of obesity and non-communicable diseases, especially among children and youth.
The HFSS foods are usually processed and are typically low in essential nutrients; excessive consumption of HFSS foods can contribute to various health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
What are the unhealthy snacks?
Any snack or food, Indian or Western, homemade or packaged, can be unhealthy if it exceeds the limits of sugar, salt and fat content.
'It would not be pertinent to single out Indian snack foods or Western ones, or even packed foods or the ones we buy on the street. The focus should be on the nutritional content of a food irrespective of its origin. Initiatives of the Health Ministry are a part of a non-punitive, awareness-driven approach to create behavioural nudges and empower consumers to make informed choices. These efforts complement government programmes like Eat Right India of FSSAI, Poshan Abhiyaan, Fit India, National NCDs control programme and school health initiatives,' says Dr. Kulkarni.
What are the guidelines on sugar and salt?
TheWorld Health Organization recommends a healthy diet throughout life to help prevent all forms of malnutrition (wasting, stunting, underweight, inadequate vitamins or minerals, overweight, obesity), as well as a range of diet-related non-communicable diseases(such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers), and lower the risk of infectious diseases. For adults in India, the recommended daily intake is less than 65g of total fat, less than 25g of added sugar, and less than 5g of salt. The limits have also been set for children in their various phases of development.
Ms. Rao advocates for building meals around fibre-rich ingredients, local produce, lean proteins, and healthy fats. 'Cook at home more often, slow down at meals, and reduce reliance on packaged shortcuts. Small, consistent changes make a bigger impact than restrictive trends. What matters most isn't perfection, but a long-term pattern of choosing food that nourishes the body.'

Chennai: In a groundbreaking medical feat, two men in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore have been given a new lease of life after undergoing India's first inter-hospital liver swap transplant - a move that required a special court order to override current rules limiting swaps to within a single hospital. The two patients, admitted at GEM Hospital and Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, were both suffering from end-stage liver disease and had family donors - their wives - who were unfortunately incompatible. However, doctors discovered that the donors were a match for the other patient, opening the door to a rare, life-saving exchange. "Under current Indian transplant laws, organ swaps are only permitted within the same hospital," Dr Anand Vijay, transplant surgeon at GEM Hospital, said. "But we felt this exchange could save both lives, so we coordinated with Sri Ramakrishna Hospital and obtained court permission to proceed." Following due legal process and approval from the government transplant committee, which independently verified donor consent and ruled out any commercial interest, the surgeries were successfully conducted. A special "green corridor" was created in Coimbatore to ensure swift transport of the harvested livers between hospitals. "This model expands the donor pool tremendously for patients who have willing but incompatible family donors," said Dr Magnus Jayaraj, also from GEM Hospital. "It could be a game-changer for liver and kidney transplants." Doctors rule out this paving way for organ trade. Dr R Jayapal from Sri Ramakrishna Hospital added: "No shortcuts were taken. These transplants underwent all legal protocols. This is life-saving, not a loophole for organ trade. The government committee would meet, investigate and confirm the relationship of donors with documentary evidence and only the transplant is permitted." The procedures, which cost Rs 20 lakh each, were entirely covered under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Health Insurance Scheme, ensuring zero cost for the families. Both patients are recovering well post-surgery. Tamil Nadu has long led the way in organ donation in India, a country where the donation rate still remains low. Experts now hope this successful inter-hospital liver swap could lead to broader legalisation and protocol development for similar life-saving initiatives in the future.

India developing indigenous multi-stage Malaria vaccine 'AdFalciVax'
New Delhi: India has taken a major step forward in the fight against malaria with the development of a new indigenous vaccine candidate called AdFalciVax. This vaccine is being developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), through its institutes RMRC Bhubaneswar and the National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR), in partnership with the Department of Biotechnology's National Institute of Immunology (DBT-NII). AdFalciVax is a unique malaria vaccine that targets two key stages of Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for the deadliest form of malaria. Most existing vaccines only focus on one stage of the parasite's life cycle, but AdFalciVax is designed to provide stronger and longer-lasting protection by targeting both the human infection stage and the stage responsible for transmission through mosquitoes. In early lab testing, the vaccine has shown excellent results. Scientists believe that it could offer several benefits over current vaccines like RTS, S/AS01 and R21/Matrix-M. These include broader protection, reduced chances of the parasite escaping the immune response, and improved long-term immunity. The vaccine also remains stable for over nine months at room temperature, making it easier to store and transport, especially in tropical regions. Additionally, it uses cost-effective ingredients like alum, which is commonly used as an adjuvant in vaccines. The vaccine is currently in the preclinical stage. If everything goes as planned, it could take around seven years for the vaccine to be ready for public use. The development timeline includes manufacturing under strict safety standards, clinical trials, and regulatory approvals. One of the key innovations of AdFalciVax is that it is made using 'Lactococcus lactis', a safe and well-known bacteria used in vaccine development. Its design makes it capable of protecting individuals from getting sick while also reducing the spread of malaria within communities. The ICMR plans to offer the vaccine technology to other organisations and manufacturers under non-exclusive agreements. This means multiple companies can work on producing the vaccine, helping it reach more people faster once approved. AdFalciVax is being developed entirely in India, supporting the government's 'Make in India' initiative.

Varanasi youth summit: Kashi Declaration adopted for drug-free society
Varanasi: The Kashi Declaration, affirming a national consensus to treat substance abuse as a multi-faceted public health and societal challenge and suggesting a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, was adopted at the Youth Spiritual Summit here on Sunday. 'If a nation, where 65 per cent of the population is youth, falls prey to addiction, only those who break free from it will be able to build the future,' said Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya. Addressing the Summit, the Union Minister said, 'We have reflected deeply over the last three days across diverse thematic sessions. Based on this collective chintan, the Kashi Declaration is born, not just as a document, but as a shared sankalp for the Yuva Shakti of Bharat.' The Youth Spiritual Summit on the theme Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat culminated at the Rudraksh International Convention Centre in Varanasi with the formal adoption of the Kashi Declaration. Organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Summit brought together more than 600 youth leaders, representatives from over 120 spiritual and socio-cultural organisations, academicians, and domain experts. The event marked a defining moment in Bharat's journey toward a drug-free society by 2047. This gathering represented a national convergence of youthful energy, spiritual vision, and institutional resolve. The Summit featured four focused plenary sessions exploring key dimensions of substance abuse: its psychological and societal impacts, the mechanics of drug trafficking and supply chains, strategies for grassroots awareness campaigns, and the role of spiritual and cultural institutions in rehabilitation and prevention. These deliberations formed the foundation of the Kashi Declaration, which is a visionary commitment to collaborative action against drug addiction, rooted in India's civilizational wisdom and youth leadership. The Declaration emphasises the integration of spiritual, cultural, educational, and technological efforts to prevent addiction, support recovery, and foster a national culture of sobriety, said a statement. It proposes institutional mechanisms for multi-ministerial coordination, including the formation of a Joint National Committee, annual progress reporting, and a national platform for linking affected individuals to support services.
