ITV News10 hours ago

Carlisle United's newly appointed Head of Football Operations believes that the future is looking positive for the Blues as they look to bounce back to the English Football League at the first attempt.
Marc Tierney was appointed into the senior role in Carlisle United's backroom team joining from his previous role as Director of Football at fellow National League side Altrincham.
The former defender spent time on loan at Brunton Park between 2004 and 2005.
Speaking to ITV Border about what his role at the football club will include the 39-year-old said: "Yeah it is Head of Football and in terms of football there are lots of different departments.
"I think everyone just thinks of the first team and working with first team coaches but it is really quite a broad brush stroke. That includes medical, academy there are a number of multifaceted roles with in it.
"I just can't wait to get in and try and make things better by working with different people in different departments."
Tierney said the role at Carlisle United was one he could not turn down.
He said: "I think when you look at the size of the club, having been here a few years ago now, the vision of the club, the ambition and the fan base makes it really attractive.
"Since I have been in the role other people have thought it is attractive when you spell out what the vision is and what we are looking to do. It has not disappointed since walking through the door."
Tierney believes that the ongoing work behind the scenes at Brunton Park is putting the club in a good position moving into the new season.
Tierney said: "First and foremost - Tom and Patty - it was really refreshing to see them when I was here for my first week being first in and last out of the club and really putting the work in.
"They are really welcoming people, really humble people and honoured to have this role at the football club.
Talking about his discussions with United's Head Coach, Tierney said: "When meeting Mark, I had come across him in professional roles before, but meeting him he is a good person.
"Obviously his football knowledge is huge and he has been successful as a manager and as a player and I think that mix of all of us communicating and working together bodes well for the football club."

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson issues lengthy public apology - 'I let you down'

Nicolas Jackson's position at Chelsea is under threat from Liam Delap, and his response to losing his place to the £30m new boy on his birthday was a shocker Nicolas Jackson has issued a public apology after his red card in the FIFA Club World Cup. Chelsea hothead Jackson got his marching orders on his 24th BIRTHDAY just FOUR MINUTES after coming on as a substitute for a shocking X-rated challenge. Jackson entered the field with the score 1-1 in Chelsea's second game of the tournament, against Brazilian side Flamengo. By the time he left the field they were 2-1 down, before going on to lose 3-1 to the side coached by ex-Blues left-back Filipe Luis. ‌ After the match, Jackson wrote on instagram: 'I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. Another red card... and honestly, I'm so angry at myself. ‌ 'I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. 'No excuses. I take full responsibility. 'I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry.' It compounded six minutes of second half madness for Chelsea as Flamengo turned the game on its head and went from 1-0 down to 2-1 up before Jackson got sent off. There was no excuse for his appalling studs-up challenge on Flamengo's Ayrton Lucas which in this competition gets an automatic one game ban which FIFA can review and upgrade. Frankly, they should throw the book at him and it is no wonder that Maresca signed Liam Delap because he cannot trust Jackson. ‌ Jackson has so much talent but his reckless temperament makes him a liability and suddenly, from winning their first game, the mood will change in the Chelsea camp. Defender Marc Cucurella revealed he apologised to the players in the dressing room post-game. The Spaniard said: "He's very sad. He tried to win the ball, had the bad luck that he kicked his leg and that's it. He's a young player with a lot of quality but maybe needs to improve a little bit in these things. ‌ 'But he has to learn. After the manager spoke, he said sorry, he didn't do it on purpose. He's a very important player for us, we will miss him in the next game but this is football.' Jon Obi Mikel, working for DAZN, was scathing in his assessment. He said: "Unbelievable, a stupid, stupid, stupid mistake. I don't know what was going through his head. Your team needs you and he does that!" "He did that at Newcastle in an important game. He got a red card. And now he's done this again. You can't keep making mistakes like this." ‌ Watch the Club World Cup free on DAZN £0 DAZN Get DAZN here Product Description Asked whether Jackson could have been frustrated at losing his place to Delap, Mikel responded: "I don't care what his frustration is (Delap starting). This is a massive football club and it's about competition. "If you're angry or p****d off, then you have to embrace it. We need competition." DAZN presenter Kelly Somers apologised for the choice of language from Mikel. But going back to the incident later on, Mikel added: "Jackson needs to have a word with himself, where do you want to go with your Chelsea career?" Chelsea star issues apology to team-mates after Club World Cup loss to Flamengo

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson had a 24th birthday to forget in Philadelphia as the Blues fell to a 3-1 defeat to Flamengo in their second outing at the FIFA Club World Cup Nicolas Jackson apologised to his teammates after being sent off as Chelsea wilted in the searing hot sunshine. Chelsea hothead Jackson got his marching orders on his 24th BIRTHDAY just FOUR MINUTES after coming on as a substitute for a shocking X-rated challenge. It compounded six minutes of second half madness for Chelsea as Flamengo turned the game on its head and went from 1-0 down to 2-1 up before Jackson got sent off. ‌ Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella said: 'He's very sad. He tried to win the ball, had the bad luck that he kicked his leg and that's it. He's a young player with a lot of quality but maybe needs to improve a little bit in these things. ‌ 'But he has to learn. After the manager spoke, he said sorry, he didn't do it on purpose. He's a very important player for us, we will miss him in the next game but this is football.' Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, who now needs to win their final Group match with Club Tunis to guarantee a place in the knock-out, added: 'It was a red card, so nothing else to say. They deserved to win.' The Brazilians have been too good for the best Europe has to offer after Botafogo beat Paris Saint Germain and now Flamengo humbled Chelsea after they surrendered Pedro Neto's first half lead. No-one deserves more blame than Jackson who missed the tail end of the Premier League season after a red card for an elbow at Newcastle which earned him a three game ban. They looked good early on when Neto gave them a 13th minute lead, bursting between Flamengo defenders Wesley and Danilo and racing away for a clean run on goal before his shot flew past keeper Augustin Rossi. ‌ But Chelsea could not find a second and Flamengo dominated the second half as the temperature rose in the stadium in front of 54,019 fans in the Lincoln Financial Field. Gonzalo Plata missed a sitter before he provided the assist for Bruno Henrique to level after 62 minutes. Chelsea could not deal with a set piece and Danilo was first to react to turn the game on its head three minutes later. Jackson then got his marching orders before Wallace Yan got the third as more chaos ensued in the heart of the Chelsea defence.

Nicolas Jackson sent off as Chelsea implode against Flamengo

Pedro Neto fired the Blues ahead early on but Enzo Maresca's side imploded in the second half in Philadelphia. The Blues conceded twice and saw Jackson dismissed for a horror tackle in the space of just six minutes after the break. This Mengão comeback. 😮‍💨#FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 20, 2025 Their woes were compounded when Wallace Yan wrapped up the scoring late on, adding to earlier goals from fellow substitute Bruno Henrique and veteran Danilo. The result – played out in front of a crowd of 54,019 at Lincoln Financial Field – left Chelsea with a win and a loss from their two outings in Group D having earlier looked set to take a giant stride towards the last 16. It made for a disappointing full debut for new striker Liam Delap, who had been brought into the side for Jackson, but a notable scalp for Flamengo manager Filipe Luis, formerly of the London club. The game got off to lively and feisty start yet while the Brazilians looked more at ease in the heat – 27C at kick-off – they struggled to carve out clear-cut openings. Former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho did fire over in the early stages but Robert Sanchez was not troubled in goal. Despite a lack of possession and a subdued performance from Cole Palmer out wide, Chelsea offered a threat on the counter-attack. Delap went close to opening the scoring when he burst clear and forced Agustin Rossi to palm over. Chelsea grabbed the lead when Neto benefited from a fortunate ricochet after being struck by an attempted clearance from Wesley. The Portuguese broke clear from halfway and calmly tucked away his second goal of the tournament from the edge of the box. Neto almost created another for Delap but his pull-back was cut out by Wesley and Chelsea had a penalty appeal rejected after Enzo Fernandez went down in the area. Levi Colwill headed clear off the line after a Flamengo free-kick was slung into the area but it was not until the second period the Brazilians began to cause serious problems. Where did the Chelsea fans go? 🐜 — Flamengo (@Flamengo_en) June 20, 2025 Gerson should have equalised when he cut back inside Colwill to create an opportunity but his mishit shot was intercepted by Trevoh Chalobah. It rebounded to Gonzalo Plata but he somehow poked wide. Chelsea were inches away from a second when Leo Pereira, under pressure from Delap, clipped the ball narrowly past his own post but the Blues had little control. They had another escape when Sanchez tipped over from Plata. The equaliser came just after the hour when Plata headed back across goal and Henrique raced in to pounce at the back post. Chelsea were reeling and were stung again just moments later as Henrique turned provider to head back a corner for Danilo to volley in. Nicolas Jackson's foul on Ayrton Lucas earned him a red card (Chris Szagola/AP) Chelsea's capitulation continued as Jackson, just minutes after coming off the bench, was given his marching orders for a reckless challenge in which he caught Ayrton Lucas on the shin with force. Yan rubbed salt in the wounds seven minutes from time when he readjusted and tucked home after getting in the way of a shot from team-mate Plata.
