British men win Wimbledon doubles
A 6-2, 7-6 win secured the title in record time after David Pel of Netherlands and Australia's Rinky Hijikata were swept aside in the new three-set format.
Cash, 28, and Glasspool, 31, were already the first all-British pair to reach the final since Mike Davies and Bobby Wilson in 1960.
In 30C temperatures on Centre Court, the big-serving pair easily overpowered their opponents in the first set, hitting the same form that saw them serve 11 aces to their opponents' none in the semi-final. However, there were jitters in the second set before they regained composure to take the title in a 7-3 tie-break.
The pair have been irresistible on grass this summer, having also been the first British men's pair to win Queen's in the Open era. They also triumphed at Eastbourne, having knocked out defending Wimbledon champions Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara.
Britons have been in the ascendancy in the doubles for several years, with Patten winning the title alongside Finnish partner Heliovaara last year.

Rory McIlroy gives honest reaction to dominant Scottie Scheffler victory at The Open
Rory McIlroy could not hide his 'admiration' towards Scottie Scheffler after the American stormed to victory in The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. A fourth major championship of his career, in his unique way, Scheffler has now attracted comparisons with Tiger Woods. And after McIlroy failed to find a spark to mount a late charge on Sunday, finishing in a tie for seventh on -10, Scheffler held his nerve to cruise to a four-shot victory at -17, leaving the Northern Irishman in awe of his rival. 'Admiration,' McIlroy remarked when asked to respond to his Ryder Cup rival's achievement. 'I think all you can do is admire what he does and how he does it. 'I think what he does is one thing, but how he does it is another. He just goes about his business, doesn't do anything overly flamboyant, but he's the best at executing in the game right now. 'Yeah, he's been absolutely amazing over these past two to three years. As I said, all you can do is tip your cap and watch in admiration.' But McIlroy refused to be drawn on the true impact of Scheffler's performance, dismissing the notion that it is either motivating or dispiriting. 'Neither,' remarked the Masters champion. 'All I can do is focus on myself and try to play the best golf that I can. 'I know that, when I do that, I'll have my weeks where I'll contend and hopefully win.' But McIlroy did admit the level set from Scheffler is something to aspire to in the coming months. 'None of us could hang with Scottie this week,' McIlroy concluded. 'He's an incredible player. He's been dominant this week. Honestly, he's been dominant for the last couple years. He is the bar that we're all trying to get to. 'In a historical context, you could argue that there's only maybe two or three players in the history of the game that have been on a run, the one that Scottie's been on here for the last 24 to 36 months. Incredibly impressive. 'Yeah, he's a very worthy winner. Also, he's a great person, and I think he's a wonderful ambassador for our game as well. I'm really happy for him and Meredith and his family.'

Man City in talks to re-sign James Trafford with Ederson's future unclear
James Trafford is ready to return to Manchester City if they can agree a deal with Burnley for the 22-year-old goalkeeper. City have been in discussions with the Lancashire club about a £40million buy-back clause which was inserted when Trafford left the Etihad Stadium in 2023. The clubs have yet to reach an agreement. Trafford joined City aged 12 and spent eight years there before joining Burnley for £19million. He kept 29 clean sheets and conceded only 16 goals in the Championship last season as Scott Parker's side won promotion to the Premier League and was also called into Thomas Tuchel's England squad, having been the goalkeeper for the victorious under-21 team at the European Championship in 2023. Newcastle United have been interested in signing the goalkeeper for the past year and had a bid of about £27million, including add-ons, rejected in June. City have been looking for a goalkeeper as Ederson, who is 32 next month, has a year left on his contract and could potentially leave, having been linked with Galatasaray. The Brazilian was close to leaving last summer amid interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, including Al-Nassr. Pep Guardiola, the City manager, later said the club never received an acceptable offer. Last month Ederson said he would commit to staying at City, having won six Premier League titles since joining the club in 2017. 'My head is here,' he said when asked about his future. 'It stays with City. It gives me everything to go back to the Premier League again and try to win the Champions League as well. My mind is staying in the club.' Ederson was one of three goalkeepers in Guardiola's squad at the Club World Cup this summer, along with Stefan Ortega and Marcus Bettinelli. Ortega will be 33 in November and has a year left on his deal. Bettinelli, 33, signed a one-year deal when he moved from Chelsea this summer.

Embarrassing Scottie Scheffler claim comes back to haunt Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson's preference for his LIV Golf brethren has once again come back to haunt the former PGA Tour star known as 'Lefty.' It was in March when Mickelson offered a 'hot take' on the PGA's top player, Scottie Scheffler, whom he ranked behind LIV's Joaquín Niemann at the time. Responding to a reaction from former Masters Champion and current TV analyst Trevor Immelman, Mickelson then took a swing at predicting Scheffler's 2025 season. 'Here's a hot take,' Mickelson's X post began. 'Does Scottie win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don't think so.' Scheffler has won two majors since Mickelson's post, the latest of which came on Sunday in Portrush, Northern Ireland where the 29-year-old beat second-place Harris English by four strokes with a -17. Mickelson took the high road, congratulating Scheffler online: 'Congrats to Scottie Scheffler on another impressive victory. So many irons shots were amazing and what a putting performance.' Golf fans, however, were eager to remind Mickelson of his doomed March prediction. 'But I thought he wasn't going to win another one this year?' asked one X user. 'If he keeps this up, sooner or later he's gonna enter the discussion with Joaquin Niemann as best golfer on earth,' another sarcastic critic followed. Others took mean-spirited shots at Mickelson's admitted gambling problems. But for the most part, golf fans engaged in some gentle ribbing: 'Phil got some explaining to do about that tweet.' Since Mickelson's post Scheffler has won two majors, including this week's Open Scheffler was a 3-under-par 68 on Sunday to knotch his 17th career PGA Tour win and his fourth since May. 'He's doing some Tiger-like stuff,' Xander Schauffele said afterwards, as quoted by The Associated Press. Rory McIlroy was equally effusive in his praise. 'In a historical context, you could argue that there´s only maybe two or three players in the history of the game that have been on a run, the one that Scottie´s been on here for the last 24 to 36 months,' said the native Northern Irishman. 'Incredibly impressive.' Mickelson finished The Open Championship at +1 to finish tied for 56th. He famously split from the PGA Tour in 2022 to join Saudi Arabia's upstart LIV Golf circuit. Since then, he's been a central figure in the rival tours' prolonged merger negotiations.
