'Unlikely companion joined me on ultramarathon - now she sleeps beside me'
Nine years ago, ultramarathon runner Dion Leonard from Scotland was battling the scorching heat of the Gobi Desert in China, focused on completing a gruelling 155-mile race in 2016.
But on day two, his life changed forever - thanks to an unlikely companion. A small stray dog began running alongside him, covering an incredible 80 miles over the course of the week-long race.
That border terrier mix, later named Gobi, didn't just capture Dion's heart - their story went viral, inspiring millions around the world. As Dion, now 50, reflects on almost a decade with Gobi from his home in the US, he admits the adventure hasn't slowed down.
'When we met in 2016, I was focused on winning,' Dion tells The Mirror.
'She was chewing on my shoes and trying to impress me with her little tricks, but I didn't pay her much attention.'
That all changed on day three. Dion was about to take the lead of the race, wading through a waist-deep river, when he heard frantic barking behind him.
'She knew if she followed, she'd drown. In that split second, I turned back, picked her up and carried her across. As I looked at her in my arms, I thought - maybe this dog and I are going to be friends for longer than I first thought.'
By the end of the race, Dion had promised to bring Gobi home. That promise took him on another journey - tracking her down after she went missing in the Chinese city of Urumqi and navigating red tape to bring her to the UK.
'She'd been through so much. When we finally got her back, she was injured and looked terrible, but even then she was so loving. She has this ability to sense when people need affection. She's like an angel in a dog costume.'
Their incredible bond became the bestselling memoir Finding Gobi, translated into 24 languages, and inspired millions of animal lovers around the world.
Now 11, Gobi lives with Dion and his wife Lucja Leonard, 46, in the United States, where they've been based for six years.
'Gobi's settled into family life - she sleeps on the bed every night - but she still has that adventurous streak. She chases rabbits in the park and loves to run. Her ultramarathon days are over, but she still has so much energy and joy.'
Although Gobi doesn't run long distances anymore, she loves cheering on Dion and Lucja at races. 'She usually runs the last hundred metres with us to the applause of the crowd. It's her moment and she loves it.'
Dion believes meeting Gobi didn't just save her life - it healed something in him too.
'I had a turbulent childhood. When I carried Gobi across that river, I thought about how no one cared for her, and I saw myself in her. I decided to be the person I needed when I was younger - someone to care.'
Together, Dion and Gobi have raised thousands for animal charities, inspired countless adoptions, and even met presidents and royalty.
'She doesn't know she's famous - she's just living her best life.
'She makes people smile every single day. That's her gift to the world.'
After initially living in Scotland, Gobi and Dion moved to the States six years ago, with the border terrier mix visiting 34 states so far.

Once the show began, he removed his gear and joined the party to belt out the iconic lyrics to songs including WonderWall and Don't Look Back In Anger. Fans online were quick to praise his cheeky tactic as some called him a 'legend' and a 'genius', while others joked about the next concerts being overrun with fake cleaners. 'There'll be 6,000 litter pickers at the next gig,' one person wrote. 'Wembley's going to be spotless,' added another. While John's stunt was lighthearted, security at the reunion weekend faced more serious challenges. On Friday, as many as 50 fans reportedly turned up with a ladder in an attempt to climb the perimeter fence. On Saturday, large groups were seen rushing the gates as Liam and Noel Gallagher took the stage shortly after 8 p.m. Three more Oasis shows are set to take place at Heaton Park this week, on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, before the band continues the reunion tour with five major shows at Wembley Stadium in London. Given how high demand has been, and the lengths fans are willing to go, organisers may be facing a fresh security headache ahead of the next dates. Since the bite, the Blundells claim that they have been harassed by their neighbours. "This is the sort of money you would expect to be paying somebody who has had their face ripped off by a dog, not this mere 1.2cm cut. "We thought they were doing this for money. Why else would they be doing it? "From day one, we have accepted responsibility. Our Ziggy did bite Mercina and we have never denied this. "We wanted it settled and have made multiple attempts to settle the matter with them." John responded: "This is absolutely nothing to do with financial gain at all. "It is simply about accountability." A final settlement figure will be decided at Norwich County Court later this year.

"I put the flash on my phone and I saw the 'Cat Man' sat there staring right at me": a mysterious suited figure has been terrorising and fascinating the people of Wirral. But who is behind it? Wirral residents may be witnessing a new urban legend in the making. Unnerving sightings of a man in a black cat costume have been reported stalking the coastal streets of Merseyside, inspiring amusement, confusion and terror. It's even turned into a TikTok witch hunt, with videos of sightings racking up thousands of views. But who is behind it? Facebook user Abbie Gilbert was walking her dog when she first heard the sound of a grown man making cat noises. She shone a torch and suddenly he was there: a man in a cat suit waving his arms at her before scarpering up a hill. She then posted the photos to Facebook, asking: 'Does anyone know who the freak in the cat mask and morph suit is at the coastal park near the harvester?' She added: 'Never been so scared.' The strange cat-ear wearing figure has since been seen prowling mainly beach-side areas: in the scrubby grass and nearby parks. Most recent reported sightings appear to place him around the Leasowe Beach, a popular local spot. On July 9, photos of the 'Cat Man' were posted to the Facebook group Crimewatch Wirral. The caption explained that they were in the Leasowe Bay area and they took a picture of the view. A social media user wrote: 'I spotted something on the picture it looked like a black figure so I put the flash on my phone on and I saw the 'Cat Man' sat there staring right at me.' They added: 'I was absolutely shaken, please stay safe although it is hasn't committed a crime.' TikTokers are now posting videos of themselves hanging by the Wirral coast at night, hoping to catch a glimpse of the mysterious figure for themselves. Some of these videos have hundreds of thousands of views, as commenters gather share their own tales of the suited cat. A group has even been set up on Facebook specifically to track sightings of the mysterious prankster, which now has over 2.2K members – though this of course has led to its own problems. Within the scope of just 12 hours, group members have claimed to have spotted him in the middle of a field, getting into a caravan, and in two separate parks. 'Everyone's lying, can't be in 7 places at once lmao,' one person wrote. Others have even made pleas to treat the cat man humanely, as the cat hunt has intensified. 'Cat man isn't going to come out if people do things to him and try to hunt him down to try hurt or unmask him,' one Facebook user wrote. Theories as to who might be behind the costume are also running rampant. Some say he's suffering from a mental illness, others believe it's an elaborate hoax. Meanwhile, a few even believe they could be a sexual exhibitionist. There may even be copycats. Vickie Cummings recently posted a TikTok of a 'Cat Man' sighting from her car, though as the suited figure approached many comments pointed out that it looked like a woman, casting doubt over the authenticity of the sighting. 'Apparently not the real cat man? So there's 2,' she later wrote in a TikTok caption.
