Broome Motocross club revs up with $77k State boost for new dirt kart track
The money is part of the State Government's PlayOn WA initiative, which is pumping $2.8 million into grassroots sport and recreation projects in Western Australia.
The funding will go towards a track extension at the motocross precinct, including the installation of a dirt-kart track and new toilet and washroom facilities.
Member for Kimberley Divina D'Anna congratulated the club, saying the upgrades would deliver lasting benefits.
'Congratulations to the Broome Motocross Club who will be receiving $77,139 as part of the Cook Labor Government's Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund,' she said.
'The upgrades are guided by our PlayOn WA: 2030 by 2030 initiative to deliver 2030 community sport and recreation infrastructure projects across WA by the year 2030, helping to deliver a lasting and positive impact in many communities.'
Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti said the grants were about building healthier, more connected communities.
'Through the PlayOn WA initiative we're delivering high-quality and accessible facilities that are vital for building healthy and connected communities,' she said.
'By investing in lighting, change rooms and playing surfaces, we're helping to create safer, more accessible spaces for everyone – whether you're playing, coaching or cheering from the sidelines.
'These grants are part of the WA Government's ongoing commitment to strengthening grassroots sport and recreation, and ensuring local facilities keep pace with the needs of our state's growing communities.'
The Broome motocross upgrade was among 32 projects funded Statewide in the latest round.

King Mahuta wins $100,000 Broome Cup feature
King Mahuta proved too strong in Saturday's Broome Cup, finishing more than two lengths clear in the Kimberley's richest race in front of a big crowd. The five-year-old gelding trained by Brett Pope and ridden by Elisha Whittington jumped from barrier 11 carrying 54kg, holding off a late challenge by Gambler's Gold to secure the $100,000 feature. Gambler's Gold, prepared by Darryn Pateman and ridden by Kyra Yuill, finished second, while Civvy Street for trainers S & J Casey and jockey Bonnie Palise filled third. Zadar Rock ridden by Michael Heagney and trained by Dean Cocivera ran on for fourth. The official margin was 2.39 lengths, with just a nose separating second and third. In the $30,000 Willie Creek Pearl Classic, Commissions, trained by Kevin Collins and ridden by Michael Heagney, prevailed narrowly over Ima Wild Girl. Mocha Dream was third, just under two lengths off the winner. Meanwhile, Charina Townsend won fashions on the field with her bright yellow and blue dress with matching yellow sun hat. The Broome Cup round capped off a lively racing season at the Broome Turf Club, where big crowds turned out to every meet. Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia was on hand, with the State Government also confirming a $2.6 million upgrade for the course facilities.

Broome Turf Club to receive $2.6m for upgrades to stables, jockey accommodation and facilities
The Broome Turf Club is set for a $2.6 million facelift under the State Government's Royalties for Regions Racing Fund, with upgrades to stables, jockey accommodation and facilities confirmed at the weekend. Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia, who was in town for the Broome Cup, said the investment would help secure the long-term future of racing in the Kimberley. 'Broome is one of WA's most iconic destinations and the Broome Cup has helped put it on the map, attracting big crowds every year, boosting tourism and supporting hundreds of local jobs,' he said. The funding is part of a $25.2m package being rolled out across 24 regional racing venues. The program will be managed by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety, with Racing and Wagering WA to deliver projects in consultation with local clubs. Racing contributes an estimated $22.9m a year to the Kimberley economy and nearly $1.3 billion across WA, supporting hundreds of jobs in regional towns. Regional Development and Kimberley Minister Stephen Dawson said the upgrades would ensure Broome remained a premier racing destination. 'Regional racing events like the Broome Cup are a highlight on the calendar for many in the community and across the State,' he said. Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna said the investment backed an industry that provided significant economic and social benefit. 'Our local racing industry plays a significant role in strengthening the regional economy, driving tourism, and supporting nearly 200 full-time jobs,' she said. RWWA chief executive Ian Edwards said regional racing was 'the lifeblood' of many communities. 'The Broome Cup is a highlight of the Kimberley racing season, showcasing quality country racing and providing the opportunity for people from across the State to connect and enjoy a day at the races,' he said.
