Marching Powder: Danny Dyer's lairy geezer comedy is tryhard nostalgia bait

Telegraph06-03-2025
The very moment it became respectable to like Danny Dyer again – after his calming stint on EastEnders, and genuinely endearing performance in Rivals – he's back to some of his vicious old tricks. Marching Powder, to stretch a comparison, is Danny Dyer's The Godfather, Part III. How? Because of a much-quoted Al Pacino line: just when we thought he was out, they've pulled him back in.
By 'they', we mean this film's writer-director, Nick Love, and by 'in', we mean into head-butting, coke-snorting and unprintable insults. Love is the man who put Dyer on the map 20-odd years ago, with a quartet of lairy Brit-flicks, ranging from the cheap and chirpy (2001's Goodbye Charlie Bright) to the equally cheap and grimly reactionary (2007's vigilante thriller Outlaw, which I remember with shudders). In between were The Football Factory (2004) and The Business (2005), which do have their fans.
For non-fans, no memory of the above is needed to get a handle on Marching Powder. There's also absolutely zero need to see it. It catches us up with a middle-aged football hooligan going to flab, calls him Jack, and casts guess who. In an opening spiel which sets the bar high for aggressive trash-talking, he aptly describes himself as a 'dickie-sniffing [c-word]' – rough translation, a boorish gentleman who nasally ingests a huge quantity of cocaine.
This habit has eroded his generally baffling marriage to long-suffering Dani (Stephanie Leonidas), while energising him and his tragic friends for bouts of slo-mo gang violence which regularly land them or their opponents in hospital, jail or both. One swaggering brawl plays out to a certain synth version of Beethoven's 9th, suggesting that Love's fanboy devotion to A Clockwork Orange might override having fully understood it. But who knows?
Jack makes some effort to reform his ways. He gets off the gak (one of many popular synonyms for cocaine) and tries to look after his wild child brother-in-law Kenny Boy (Calum McNab), who has just been released from a mental hospital, and likes to rob drug dealers at knife-point. Marching Powder is hilariously uncommitted, though, to the idea of actually turning a new leaf. There's always more aggro around the corner, and someone thrusting another small white packet into Jack's hand.
The film itself has a few semi-redeeming features; it's no Outlaw, thankfully. Much as it aims to shock by reviving taboo language and jokes about sitting on Gary Glitter's lap, it's more toothless than dangerous. Any niche appeal the experience has is summed up by the sight of a semi-naked Dyer slapping his beer gut and scarfing an entire bag of Wotsits, then realising one has lodged itself in his chest hair, and eating it.
In the circumstances, Stephanie Leonidas – once a teen heroine in Neil Gaiman's MirrorMask (2005) – does ferociously well in it, too. She may be fathoms out of Dyer's league, but almost gets you to buy into the premise that this toxic marriage is worth saving. Nudging this try-hard nostalgia bait out of one-star territory is a truly remarkable feat, but the credit is all hers.

Tina O'Brien's marriage U-turn as she 'gets serious' with new man

Tina O'Brien, who is dating new man Adam Fadlé following her divorce from Adam Croft, could be thinking about wedding bells, claims a source When Corrie star Jack P Shepherd tied the knot with Hanni Treweek at Manchester Cathedral, all eyes were on the happy bride and groom. But another star of the Manchester-based soap, Tina O'Brien, 41, also attracted her fair share of attention, making her first public appearance at the star-studded nuptials with her new man - and a source claims to OK! that she could even be thinking about tying the knot herself. ‌ The mum-of-two seems to have found love again with interior designer Adam Fadlé, 38, after splitting from her husband of seven years, Adam Croft s. And the pair couldn't have looked more loved up as they attended Jack's wedding alongside a host of fellow cast members such as Lucy Fallon, Samia Longchambon, Alan Halsall and Jayne Danson - even going in for a passionate kiss at one point. ‌ ‌ A source at the wedding told : 'There was no mistaking they were an item on the day. Tina looked very much smitten with Adam. She looked radiant and everyone that saw them could see how besotted with each other they were. They were all over each other". They added, as it emerged Tina packed on the PDA at her co-star's wedding: 'Tina dotes on him - she loves that he's very calm and is a real gentleman, in every way. She's head over heels. This is no flash in the pan relationship, they're getting serious.' Tina has had quite a rollercoaster when it comes to her lovelife, but the Weatherfield favourite is thought to be 'besotted' with her new beau - and is evening considering tying the knot again, claims our mole, inspired by pal Jack's fairytale nuptials. 'There is talk of marriage between them already. It might seem like quite the U-turn given her marriage to Adam not working out, but there could totally be wedding bells at some point - they loved Jack's big day and seemed really caught up in the whole wedding fever. Tina is happy to give marriage a second try." ‌ It's believed (subs - source in The Sun) the pair met through friends in their hometown of Cheshire, and have already been on a string of dates together and that Tina - who plays Sarah Platt on the Cobbles - is 'totally mad' for her new beau. Their cosy debut as a couple came not long after Tina was seen letting her hair down and enjoying the single life, after it was revealed last month that she and her husband had called it a day, following weeks of speculation. ‌ The estranged couple share a son, Beau, 10, and are thought to be on amicable terms for the sake of their child, but their very different lifestyles - Tina allegedly enjoying a showbiz party, while Adam prefers the quiet life - took a toll on their marriage. Tina and her estranged husband first met at a coffee shop in Manchester in 2011, the couple tying the knot in a surprise New Year 's Eve ceremony in 2018. But split rumours began to emerge when she shared a snap of herself at former co-star, Colson Smith 's leaving party. Taking to Instagram, Tina - just weeks after going on holiday without her husband - donned a stunning red mini dress and without her wedding ring markedly absent on her ring finger. Friends subsequently confirmed that the couple had split, and that after moving house at Christmas had decided to live separately for the time being. ‌ Tina also shares a daughter Scarlett, 16, also an actress on Waterloo Road, with ex Ryan Thomas, who recently returned to Weatherfield as part of Sue Cleaver 's (Eileen Grimshaw) exit storyline. The two soap stars began a relationship in 2003, welcoming their daughter in 2008, but split in 2008, though they continue to co-parent Scarlett, who features regularly on both mum and dad's social media. ‌ Their relationship, however, has been notoriously strained, though in recent times it's believed the pair have decided to put their differences aside to support teenage Scarlett's budding career. Back in April, a source close to the family told : 'Ryan and Tina have had their rows and disagreements over the years, but now, they are joining forces and pulling out all the stops, as they can see that Scarlett is going to be a superstar.' Well, with relations seemingly more harmonious when it comes to her ex Ryan, her career going great guns and a potential wedding on the cards, this could be a whole new chapter for Tina. And nobody deserves lasting happiness more.

Lorraine Stanley: 'I used weight loss jabs to lose 6.5st but one shock changed my mind'

Lorraine Stanley opens up about her incredible 6 and a half stone weight loss as she prepares to walk down the aisle with her partner of 12 years Mark Perez - and returning to Albert Square When OK! catches up with former EastEnders actress Lorraine Stanley at a glitzy London ball, she couldn't look more different to Karen Taylor, the lovable yet perpetually dishevelled mum she played on the BBC soap from 2017 to 2024. Not only is the 49-year-old looking über-glamorous as we chat at the Paul Strank Charitable Trust Summer Party – she's wearing a white sparkly dress which she proudly declares was purchased on Vinted – she's barely recognisable, having lost 6½st over two years. ‌ Lorraine, who has nine-year-old daughter Nancy with her fiancé Mark Perez, shares her excitement about tying the knot this month after a two-year engagement, the secrets behind her incredible weight loss and why she's happy, for now, to be her daughter's personal taxi service… ‌ ‌ Hi, Lorraine! We hear you're getting married later this month… I am indeed. I'm getting married to my partner in a ceremony local to where we live in Hertfordshire. It's going to be low-key. From my EastEnders gang, Danny Walters is coming. I wanted them all to come, but we're just having a small, intimate wedding at a church, then a pub with a tepee and barbecue. Will Nancy have a special part to play? ‌ She's the one wearing the big white wedding dress – well, the flower girl dress. Mine's modest, really. But I'm so excited. Mark and I have been together for 12 years. So why tie the knot now? We're just in a really good place. You know, every couple goes through their ups and downs, but it feels right, we're happy. Nancy wanted us to get married, I wanted his surname – I know some women don't want that but I do. I want to be Mrs Perez. I've been abroad a few times with Nancy and was asked if she's my daughter as we have different surnames on our passports. But it's not just practicalities, it's love. ‌ Why do you and Mark work so well together? We've got an understanding, we respect each other. We give each other space, we've got our own lives. He's the best father. He's in marketing, so nothing to do with my world, though I think he could be an actor – he can be quite dramatic at times! ‌ You're 50 next year. How do you feel? I'm feeling great. I looked 20 years older when I was bigger. I certainly felt it anyway. I won't have a big showbiz bash. We might go to Disney World Florida. We'll see. You look incredible. Tell us about the transformation… ‌ I've lost 6½st. I weigh 8st now. If you look at my little wrists and ankles, this is the weight I should have been. I should be a thin person. And I always was, until I hit my late twenties. How did you lose the weight? I'm not going to lie, nor am I promoting it, but I had weight-loss surgery two years ago. I had a gastric sleeve. I went to Harley Street. I didn't go to a clinic in Turkey or anything. In saying that, I've had friends who've gone to Turkey and had great experiences, but I didn't trust that process. So, yeah, I went to a London clinic, paid an awful lot of money and had it done. It's hands-down the best thing I've ever done – both for me and for my family. ‌ I can play with my daughter. I used to be so big I couldn't chase her up the road. I was missing out on so much – even playing a bit of football with her outside. It's changed everything. It's pretty drastic surgery. What was the big lightbulb moment? I was at home watching an episode of EastEnders I was in and I could barely look at myself. The person on screen was unrecognisable to me. I know TV puts a stone on you, but… so yes, there was an element of vanity, but it was also me wanting to change things for my daughter and our future. ‌ Did you try any weight-loss jabs before opting for surgery? Yeah, I'd tried Wegovy. I have friends on different weight-loss jabs and they work for them. I'm not against them, but for whatever reason I feel like I got immune to them. It got to the point where I was injecting myself and eating at the same time. I was thinking, 'What the hell are you doing?' So I decided that was it, time to get this surgery booked. ‌ Do you feel like a new woman? Where do I start? I'm healthier, I'm fitter and it's changed my mindset for the better. I still enjoy a square or two of chocolate, but everything's in small portions. I can eat what I want, just smaller amounts of it. It has been hard, though. You've got to work at your portions. You don't want to overeat as you can stretch the gastric band. And you don't want to do that as you've paid good money for it. But for me – and this is totally personal – it's the best thing I could have done. ‌ Would you go back on EastEnders? Maybe – they didn't kill me off. But right now, I wouldn't. I'm enjoying Nancy. On EastEnders, I missed a lot of milestones. Now I'm like her personal taxi driver for skateboarding, piano lessons – and I love it. I've gone for a few auditions. I haven't got anything yet, but I will. And if I don't, I don't mind that either. I'm so happy being a mum. Would you go on any of the big reality TV shows? If the money was amazing, maybe. But it's not my thing. I love acting, theatre especially, so I want to try and keep on that path. I'd love a role at the National Theatre. That's where I started my career, so it would be a nice full-circle moment.
