Trump threatens to bomb Iran again if it builds new nuclear plants
The US president claimed it would take 'years' to bring the sites at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan back into service and promised to 'obliterate' any new nuclear sites Iran may try and build.
In a post on his Truth Social site sent from his golf club near Washington, he claimed all three of Tehran's nuclear sites had been destroyed after the US dropped 14 30,000lb GBU-57 'bunker buster' bombs on them.
'It would take years to bring them back into service and, if Iran wanted to do so, they would be much better off starting anew, in three different locations, prior to those sites being obliterated, should they decide to do so,' he said before ending with his trademark signoff. 'Thank you for your attention to this matter!'
Mr Trump has endured a difficult week, fending off criticism from his supporters about his administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case and the embarrassing revelation that he allegedly sent a lewd message and drawing to the billionaire financier in 2003, before he was convicted of sex offences.
On Thursday, the White House said the swelling in Mr Trump's legs was caused by chronic venous insufficiency, a condition in which veins have trouble moving blood back to the heart.
On Saturday, he pivoted back to one of the major successes of his presidency so far: Operation Midnight Hammer, when B-2 bombers struck Iran's nuclear sites without Iran firing a shot in defence.
Mr Trump claims the Iranian programme was 'totally obliterated'. But a recent assessment by US intelligence suggested that only the underground site at Fordow was completely destroyed.
Two other sites, at Natanz and Isfahan, may not have been dealt a knockout blow, according to officials who briefed NBC News last week.
Sean Parnell, a Pentagon spokesman, dismissed the report.
He said: 'The credibility of the Fake News Media is similar to that of the current state of the Iranian nuclear facilities: destroyed, in the dirt, and will take years to recover.'
There have also been questions about whether the lead-up to the strikes on June 21 allowed Iran enough time to move highly enriched uranium to secret locations.
For example, 16 lorries were spotted lining up outside Fordow ahead of the attacks.
A possible destination was Pickaxe mountain, Kūh-e Kolang Gaz Lā, which is 90 miles south of Fordow, and minutes away from Natanz in central Isfahan province.
Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said Iranian officials refused to answer questions about what was happening at the fortified, underground facility.
He said: 'Since it is obvious it is in a place where numerous and important activities related to the programme are taking place, we're asking them, 'What is this for?' And they are telling us, 'It's none of your business.'

It is not known how much cryptocurrency law enforcement agencies currently have, but one 2018 raid saw 61,000 Bitcoin seized from a Chinese Ponzi scheme. The value of Bitcoin has surged since Mr Trump's return to the White House, meaning the haul could be worth more than £5.4bn. Responding to the suggestion Ms Reeves could sell the reserves, Reform UK chairman Zia Yusuf said: 'This would be a terrible decision. The UK should be implementing Reform's Crypto Bill and increasing its Bitcoin reserves. 'Selling now will go down as a far worse decision than Gordon Brown's fire sale of our gold. 'The Westminster class are dinosaurs who don't get the future.' But Aidan Larkin, the chief executive of seizure company Asset Reality, told The Sunday Telegraph: 'There is oil under our feet in terms of digital assets, from an illicit perspective, that could have hundreds of millions of pounds coming back into the UK each year.' Bitcoin investors have been spurred on by Mr Trump, who has lent his support to the market both by promising new legislation and regulatory changes, but also even launching his own digital currencies. As President Donald Trump has racked up a string of major policy wins in his six months, Democrats are stuck in a rut without a clear party leader, they admitted in interviews with the Daily Mail. Though House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are technically the left's top lawmakers, Democrats on Capitol Hill shared that there is still no consensus on who is the party's head. In the absence of a clear frontrunner to lead the party in 2028, Democrats are left to tout their current efforts resisting Trump. 'It's a group leadership at this point in time, obviously Hakeem, obviously Chuck Schumer, a lot of governors,' veteran Democrat Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland told the Daily Mail in an interview. 'I think there are a number of leaders.' Hoyer twice served as House Majority Leader under former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He has served on Capitol Hill for over 43 years since 1981 and is the longest tenured Democrat in the House of Representatives. It's safe to say he's been around a while to witness the party in and out of power. 'When you don't have the presidency...I can't remember a time when there was a leader,' he continued. 'So I think it's a collective leadership.' Other Democrats flat-out admitted there is no clear head of the party. Hoyer told the Daily Mail that there are a number of Democratic leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. But his colleague, Rep. Moskowitz, said the party doesn't really have a leader at the moment A recent poll from Reuters/Ipsos found that 62 percent of Democratic voters want completely new leadership 'We don't have a counterpart in our party at the moment, because ... we're coming out of the last presidency,' Florida Democrat Rep. Jared Moskowitz told the Daily Mail. 'But no, we don't have a counterbalance at the moment.' One longtime Democrat even likened Mamdani to Trump, saying they share a similar populist appeal. Calm reported in Syria's Sweida, Damascus says truce holding
DAMASCUS, July 20 (Reuters) - Residents reported calm in Syria's Sweida on Sunday after the Islamist-led government announced that Bedouin fighters had withdrawn from the predominantly Druze city and the United States stepped up calls for an end to days of fighting. With hundreds reported killed, the Sweida bloodshed is a major test for interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, prompting Israel to launch airstrikes against government forces last week as it declared support for the Druze. Fighting continued on Saturday despite a ceasefire call. Interior Minister Anas Khattab said on Sunday that internal security forces had managed to calm the situation and enforce the ceasefire, "paving the way for a prisoner exchange and the gradual return of stability throughout the governorate". Reuters images showed interior ministry forces near the city, blocking the road in front of members of tribes congregated there. The Interior Ministry said late on Saturday that Bedouin fighters had left the city. Kenan Azzam, a dentist, said there was an uneasy calm but the city's residents were struggling with a lack of water and electricity. "The hospitals are a disaster and out of service, and there are still so many dead and wounded," he said by phone. Another resident, Raed Khazaal, said aid was urgently needed. "Houses are destroyed ... The smell of corpses is spread throughout the national hospital," he said in a voice message to Reuters from Sweida. The Syrian state news agency said an aid convoy sent to the city by the government was refused entry while aid organised by the Syrian Red Cresent was let in. A source familiar with the situation said local factions in Sweida had turned back the government convoy. The Druze are a small but influential minority present in Syria, Israel and Lebanon who follow a religion that is an offshoot of a branch of Shi'ite Islam. Some hardline Sunnis deem their beliefs heretical. The fighting began a week ago with clashes between Bedouin and Druze fighters. Damascus sent troops to quell the fighting, but they were drawn into the violence and accused of widespread violations against the Druze. Residents of the predominantly Druze city said friends and neighbours were shot at close range in their homes or in the streets by Syrian troops, identified by their fatigues and insignia. Sharaa on Thursday promised to protect the rights of Druze and to hold to account those who committed violations against "our Druze people". He has blamed the violence on "outlaw groups". While Sharaa has won U.S. backing since meeting President Donald Trump in May, the violence has underscored the challenge he faces stitching back together a country shattered by 14 years of conflict, and added to pressures on its mosaic of sectarian and ethnic groups. U.S. envoy Tom Barrack said "brutal acts by warring factions on the ground undermine the government's authority and disrupt any semblance of order". "All factions must immediately lay down their arms, cease hostilities, and abandon cycles of tribal vengeance. Syria stands at a critical juncture—peace and dialogue must prevail—and prevail now," he wrote on X. After Israel bombed Syrian government forces in Sweida and hit the defence ministry in Damascus last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had established a policy demanding the demilitarisation of territory near the border, stretching from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights to the Druze Mountain, east of Sweida. He said Israel would protect the Druze. The United States however said it did not support the Israeli strikes. On Friday, an Israeli official said Israel agreed to allow Syrian forces limited access to the Sweida area for two days. A Syrian security source told Reuters that internal security forces had taken up positions near Sweida, establishing checkpoints in western and eastern parts of the province where retreating tribal fighters had gathered. On Sunday, Sharaa received the report of an inquiry into violence in Syria's coastal region in March, where Reuters reported in June that Syrian forces killed 1,500 members of the Alawite minority following attacks on security forces. The presidency said it would review the inquiry's conclusions and ensure steps to "bring about justice" and prevent the recurrence of "such violations". It called on the inquiry to hold a news conference on its findings - if appropriate - as soon as possible. The Syrian Network for Human Rights said on July 18 it had documented the deaths of at least 321 people in Sweida province since July 13. The preliminary toll included civilians women, children, Bedouin fighters, members of local groups and members of the security forces, it said, and the dead included people killed in field executions by both sides. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, another monitoring group, has reported a death toll of at least 940 people. Reuters could not independently verify the tolls.
