The European hidden gem named one of the top places to relocate to - and it's even home to a beautiful castle
Tomar, a Portuguese city located between Porto and Lisbon, took the crown as the continent's best hidden gem in a new study by HomeToGo.
The research used the holiday home company's internal search data to find some of the least-searched for destinations in Europe.
Despite its location between two of Portugal's leading destinations, many Brits have never heard of beautiful Tomar.
But they might want to get it on their radar.
The historic city is also one of the best places to move to in Portugal, according to a property expert.
'Tomar is a charming city known for its rich history and stunning architecture, including the UNESCO-listed Convent of Christ, a former Templar stronghold,' said Paul Stubbs, team leader for PPProperty.
'The city offers picturesque streets, beautiful gardens, and vibrant festivals that capture the essence of Portuguese culture.'
The UNESCO Convent of Christ is the city's top-rated attraction on Tripadvisor with an impressive rating of 4.8 out of five stars.
Visitors can explore the complex's monasteries, wander its cloisters and discover the history of the Knights Templar.
And unlike other popular historic attractions in Portugal, the convent is usually fairly uncrowded.
Next on the list is Tomar Castle. Built in 1160 as a Templar stronghold, the Castle is one of Tomar's most impressive attractions. Both the city's Castle and the Convent can be visited together on one trip.
Every four years, Tomar celebrates the unique Festa dos Tabuleiros - the Festival of the Trays.
Girls carry tabuleiros (stacks of bread and flowers, topped with a crown) on their heads and parade through the city. The last celebration took place in 2023 with the next planned for July 2027.
Tourists can also explore the Synagogue of Tomar, a medieval Jewish temple that was built in the mid 15th century. Visit Portugal describes it as 'the only one of its kind from this period to have been fully preserved in Portugal'.
And this hidden city even has its own special dessert.
Visitors can explore the complex's monasteries, wander its cloisters and discover the history of the Knights Templar
Fatias de Tomar were originally created by the nuns of the Convent of Christ and are made from soaking bread slices in a sugary syrup.
The bread is then baked in a special 'chimney' style spot and while there's nothing pious about the sweet treat, it is rumoured to be every friar's favourite dessert.
How to get to Tomar
Tomar is just over an hour from Lisbon by train so British tourists can best reach the city by flying to the Portuguese capital.
Porto is slightly further away with a train between the two cities taking around two hours and 20 minutes.

Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet REUNITE after 45 days as she visits him in Budapest where he's shooting Dune 3
Kylie Jenner and her boyfriend Timothee Chalamet were reunited after 45 days apart. The 28-year-old billionaire and the 29-year-old actor were spotted in Budapest where he is currently filming Dune: Part Three. This comes just days after the Daily Mail reported that the beauty 'secretly jets off to see him when she can.' The image was shared by employees at a coffee shop that were star struck by the Hollywood power couple. 'Today Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet just walked in to our coffeeshop at Buda we were so in confusion, we could barley concentrate, but i think you can see on our face,' wrote the woman behind the Instagram page Budapest Baristas. 'Thank god everyone look at them not us. They were super nice and kind thank you for coming @kyliejenner @tchalamet ❤️.' Timothee pulled his white T-shirt over his head to hide his current haircut for Dune 2 while adding a brown Brentwood Country Mart cap and black Oakley sunglasses as he held up a peace sign. A gold bangle bracelet hung from his wrist. Jenner looked sporty in a white tank top over a white one as she wore her thick raven hair down. She had on light makeup with a mauve-toned lip. The employees of the coffee shop looked young as they smiled for the camera. On July 19, Chalamet's Dune: Part Three costar Zendaya was seen at the same coffee shop. The last time Jenner and Chalamet were spotted together was on July 5, in St Tropez, France for a yacht vacation. Their time apart had fans wondering if they had split up, but the Daily Mail pointed out on August 15 that his work had taken him overseas while Jenner stayed home in Hidden Hills, California but went to visit when she could. The Daily Mail explained that Chalamet has been filming his next project, Dune: Part Three, in Hungary. The thespian plays the character Paul Atreides in the third installment of the Dune franchise. 'Timothee is busy making a movie and the schedule is grueling because he is in so many scenes, he is the star,' said a source. 'So he has to be very focused and together to do his best work.' And the Daily Mail shared that Jenner was supporting her love. 'She helps him out as much as she can, like give him space to work and have her private jet on standby in case he needs to go somewhere fast,' said the source. 'Kylie is a good girlfriend to him. She is always there and wants him to be happy, and if that means he has to be overseas for a few months, she is OK with it, she will wait. She also secretly jets off to see him when she can. 'Of course she misses her man and her heart hurts when he is not near, but she makes it work.' There has been shooting in Budapest for the third Dune film. Chalamet's costars are Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Florence Pugh and Jason Momoa. Dune: Part Three will be in theatres on December 16, 2026. The IMDB logline for the film is brief: 'The film follows Muad'dib, heir to unimaginable power, as he brings to fruition the ancient scheme to create a superbeing ruler among men, not in the heavens.' Dune Messiah is a 1969 science fiction novel by American writer Frank Herbert, the second in his Dune series of six novels. A sequel to Dune, it was originally serialized in Galaxy magazine in 1969, and then published by Putnam the same year. Jenner and Chalamet started dating in January 2023, were rumored to be an item in April 2023 and then they went public with their romance in September 2023. Their first red carpet together was at the 70th David Di Donatello event at Cinecitta Studios in Rome, Italy on May 7, 2025. In early July Jenner started following Chalamet on Instagram. The businesswoman boasts almost 400million followers on the photo-sharing site, but she is quite choosy about who she follows, with only 119 profiles making the cut. However, one of those is now her boyfriend of two years. Fans of TyMothée - the pair's most popular ship name - have been driven into a frenzy after spotting Kylie has allowed the A Complete Unknown actor into her close social circle. However, at the time of writing, the follow is yet to be reciprocated.
