Here's one American who just can't get enough of Test cricket
It turns out that generalising about a country or its people isn't quite the slam dunk (to borrow a phrase from one of her favourite sports) that your editorial seems to think it is.Edward CollierCheltenham, Gloucestershire
I have an American wife and we live in Newport, Oregon. (As a too-early aside, one of the few places much rainier than the Rossendale Valley from where I hark.) Your opening sentence summed it up. My wife has become a fan of cricket and understands the rules better than I – to the point of knowing that it's a five-point penalty if a ball hits a helmet laid on the ground. Nevertheless she could not understand the fascination of the last couple of sessions at Lord's and departed to the kitchen where she was making baguettes, her comment being that watching yeast rise is more exciting (not that the yeast itself rises).
By contrast, I was enthralled and on the point of tears when it was over, watching Mohammed Siraj being consoled. This was one for Wisden.David FarrellyNewport, Oregon
Andy Bull (Never mind Bazball, this was Bazbrawl: say goodbye to happy-go-lucky England, 14 July) rehearses rules at Lord's, including that 'you do need a tailored jacket, tie or cravat to get into the pavilion'. Strange, I've been admitted to the pavilion on several occasions with none of those items. Each time I was wearing a dress.Liz FullerLondon
Methinks Barney Ronay's reporting also comes from a 'place of love, passion and cinematic personal obsession'. As beautiful and poetic as the Test match (Stokes is a destiny man who loomed over Lord's like the angel of the north, 14 July).Seán DuffyStockport, Greater Manchester

Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton 'makes key decision on Liverpool transfer' with Tottenham also interested in move
Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton has reportedly made a key decision regarding a potential move to Liverpool. The midfielder has been heavily linked with a switch to Anfield, while Tottenham are also interested in signing him. Palace are eager not to lose Wharton this summer, especially given that Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze could depart before the closure of the transfer window. As reported by The Sun, Wharton is willing to stay at Palace this season, which would mean that Liverpool would be the favourites to sign him. Wharton joined Palace in February 2024 from Blackburn, who would be entitled to 15 per cent of the fee from his next move. Since signing for Palace Wharton has made 43 appearances, although he missed a significant part of last season due to groin surgery. The 21-year-old is known for his excellent passing and technical ability. Wharton made his senior England debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2024 and was subsequently named in the Three Lions' Euro 2024 squad. However, he didn't feature at the tournament. Liverpool have been heavily active in the transfer market this summer, securing deals for Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. The Reds would be willing to wait until next year if it means that they can secure a deal for Wharton. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have also monitored Wharton's progress. However, his struggles with injury last season mean they haven't pursued a move for him.

Royal Opera House performer unfurls Palestinian flag on stage
A Royal Opera House performer unfurled a Palestine flag on stage during the curtain call for Il trovatore's closing night on Saturday (19 July). A brief scuffle ensued as an official appeared to try and stop the protest, and the cast member continued to hold up the flag at the London performance. A spokesperson for the Royal Ballet and Opera said: 'The display of the flag was an unauthorised action by the artist. It was not approved by the Royal Ballet and Opera and is a wholly inappropriate act."

Man City want £35m for James McAtee as Nottingham Forest and West Ham weigh up moves
Manchester City's valuation of James McAtee is proving a stumbling block for the England Under-21 captain's legion of suitors. Nottingham Forest and West Ham United as well as Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany are all competing for McAtee's signature. Most of McAtee's suitors had been hoping to strike a deal around the £20 million to £25 million mark for the player, who has entered the final year of his contract at City. But City are thought to be holding out for around £35m, meaning there is a significant gap in valuations. McAtee's admirers have not been deterred and Forest are thought to be among the clubs who could advance their interest in the City attacking midfielder in the days ahead. But there will be some significant negotiating to be done to strike a deal. City sold Cole Palmer to Chelsea for £42.5m in 2023 and have been using that as something of a benchmark on their pricing for McAtee. McAtee spent some time in Germany recently to meet Frankfurt and Dortmund and is believed to have been impressed by what he saw. Forest and West Ham are also pushing for the player as they bid to strengthen their attacks. Forest have sold Anthony Elanga to Newcastle for £55m while Morgan Gibbs-White faces an uncertain future amid Tottenham Hotspurs' efforts to sign the England midfielder. West Ham manager Graham Potter wants attacking reinforcements having sold Mohammed Kudus to Spurs for £55m. City are interested in re-signing James Trafford should Ederson or Stefan Ortega leave the club this summer. Newcastle had identified Trafford as a leading target but the England Under-21 goalkeeper is believed to have had his head turned by City's interest. Burnley have been holding out for up to £40m for Trafford after rejecting a bid from Newcastle worth around £25m. City sold Trafford to Burnley for a projected £19m in 2023 and have a buy-back option on the goalkeeper but, like Newcastle, they are not thought to be willing to pay as much as £40m. Ederson has been linked with a move to Galatasaray but senior sources at City have played down the talk of a switch to the Turkish club. The Brazil goalkeeper said late last month that rumours of him leaving were 'fake news' and that he expected to stay at City. Ortega's future remains the source of some uncertainty and if he was to leave City would need a replacement. City signed goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea last month following the departure of long-standing No 3 Scott Carson. Meanwhile, City are still planning on midfielder Nico González and academy graduate Nico O'Reilly, who has been linked with a number of loan moves, remaining at the club this summer. González, who joined City from Porto for £50m in January, has been attracting interest on the continent.
