Two injured after multi-vehicle crash on I-40 pinned two people; cause is unknown
It is unclear what caused the crash.
One of the drivers is in critical condition, New Mexico State Police spokesperson Amanda Richards said in an email.
Just before 8 a.m., Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to a call of a commercial vehicle fire on westbound I-40 by Rio Grande NW.
When firefighters arrived, they found a person trapped in a burning car pinned underneath a semi-truck, AFR spokesperson Jason Fejer said. Firefighters were able to get them out before that person was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital, he said.
About 50 yards away, Fejer said, firefighters found another car with a person pinned inside. That person was also taken to UNMH, he said.
The incident caused westbound I-40 near the Big I to shutdown. It has since reopened.

Denny Hamlin survives rain delay, overtime finish to win for 2nd straight year at Dover
DOVER, Del. (AP) — Denny Hamlin went back-to-back at Dover Motor Speedway, holding a late lead through a rain delay and an overtime finish Sunday for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver's series-best fourth victory of the season. Hamlin won in the No. 11 Toyota for the second straight time at Dover to add to wins this season at Martinsville, Darlington and Michigan. Hamlin has 58 NASCAR Cup Series victories, leaving him, two short of Kevin Harvick for 10th on the career list. The 44-year-old Virginia driver might hit that mark this season as he chases his first career Cup championship. 'Winning here at Dover is super special to me,' Hamlin said. 'This is a place that I've not been very good at the first half of my career. To go back-to-back here the last two years is amazing.' Hamlin took the checkered flag days after he suffered a setback in court with his own 23XI Racing team's federal antitrust suit against NASCAR. On Thursday, a federal judge rejected a request from 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports to continue racing with charters while they battle NASCAR in court, meaning their six cars will race as open entries this weekend at Dover, next week at Indianapolis and perhaps longer than that in a move the teams say would put them at risk of going out of business. Hamlin vowed this weekend 'all will be exposed' if the case goes to its scheduled Dec. 1 trial date. The courtroom drama hasn't affected Hamlin's performance on the track. Hamlin held off JGR teammate Chase Briscoe for the victory. Hendrick Motorsports drivers took the next two spots, with Alex Bowman third and Kyle Larson fourth. Hamlin held off Kyle Larson down the stretch last season to earn the second of his three career wins at the Monster Mile. The first July Cup race at Dover since 1969 started with steamy weather and drivers battled the conditions inside the car during a relatively clean race until rain fell late and red-flagged the race with 14 laps left. Hamlin said the during the break he planned to change his firesuit — temperatures inside the car soared to 140 degrees. He also returned to the car after the 56-minute delay with old tires. Hamlin had enough to win at Dover and park the Toyota in victory lane. 'We've got a lot left,' Hamlin said. Pittsburgh man facing attempted homicide charge after allegedly beating 10-month-old boy
A man is accused of slamming a 10-month-old baby's head into a bedpost, injuring the child so badly that doctors had to remove part of his skull in an attempt to save his life. Police say the suspect is the boyfriend of the baby's mother. The man, Dominic Pinnick, is expected to be formally charged Sunday night, facing several charges, including criminal attempted homicide and three counts of aggravated assault. At last check, the baby was in critical condition, but Pinnick is accused of beating his girlfriend's 10-month-old so badly that, according to court documents, the baby is not expected to survive. A doctor told investigators that the baby's injuries were not consistent with a fall, but were consistent with abusive head trauma and violence. The baby has one large skull fracture and numerous retinal hemorrhages, which are consistent with violent shaking. The baby also appears to have multiple impact strikes to his chest and a possible arm fracture. On Friday, just after 4 p.m., Pittsburgh police responded to a house on Kedron Street in the city's Homewood neighborhood for a report of an "infant falling from a bed." The baby was rushed to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh "unresponsive, not breathing on his own and experiencing multiple seizures," officials say. A doctor also told investigators the baby had multiple knots and bruising. His head injuries caused a brain bleed and swelling. The baby went into surgery to remove part of his skull because of brain swelling. In a police interview, Pinnick told investigators he was asked by the baby's parent to watch the child. Pinnick said he heard crying and went upstairs to console the child. He said when he went into the bedroom, the baby was on the floor on the side of the bed and wouldn't stop crying. He got frustrated and walked around the bedroom, and hit the child's head approximately three or four times on the wooden canopy bed posts in the bedroom. Pinnick said he "aggressively placed the child on the bed, aggressively rocked the baby, and that he grabbed the child and aggressively rubbed the back of the baby's head." Pinnick said when he put the baby on the bed, he also "struck his head on the headboard." When he saw the baby's limp body, he called 911 for help. KDKA-TV reached out to Pittsburgh police for an update on the baby's condition, but has not heard back.
