3 Top ULFA(I) Leaders Killed In Drone Attacks Near Myanmar Border, No Confirmation From Army
There are reports that the Indian Army conducted drone strikes in Myanmar, though there is no official confirmation from the military or defence sources.
The proscribed ULFA(I), who seemed to be the target, claimed the attacks on its camps along the Myanmar border as having been carried out by the Indian Army.
More than 100 armed drones were reportedly launched in a pre-dawn operation between 2 to 4 am on Sunday, targeting insurgent bases in Myanmar's Sagaing region.
The strikes focused on the Naga Self-Administered Zone, hitting locations such as ULFA(I)'s Eastern Command headquarters at Hoyat Basti and 779 Camp in Waktham Basti. Additionally, camps of the NSCN-K, PLA, and RPF were also struck by Indian drones.
The ULFA(I), in a press statement, said Nayan Asom alias Nayan Medhi, who was the 'chairman' of its 'lower council', was killed in the attacks. It said two other senior leaders, 'brigadier' Ganesh Asom and 'colonel' Pradip Asom, were killed in the second round of attacks during Nayan Asom's funeral. At least 19 others were injured, it added.
The ULFA(I) has declared India as the aggressor and threatened retaliation.
According to sources, the drones used in the operation are believed to be Israeli and French-made combat UAVs known for their high-precision strike capabilities. Despite the significant impact of the operation, neither the army nor Assam Rifles confirmed their involvement.
They added that this operation marks India's first known use of mass drone swarms in a cross-border counter-insurgency. The follow-up funeral strike indicates a deliberate, layered targeting strategy with a zero-tolerance approach.
The ULFA(I) has accused India of colonial occupation and warned of armed retaliation in Assam and northeast, the sources said. This action bears similarities to earlier Indian operations, such as the 2015 Myanmar raids but witnessed advanced aerial technology.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, meanwhile, denied involvement of the state police or any attack from its soil stating that 'things will be clearer towards the evening".
'The Assam Police is not involved in it and no attack has been carried out from our soil," Sarma told reporters on the sidelines of an official visit to Golaghat district.
Sarma said in case of such operations, the army comes out with a statement, but nothing has been issued so far. 'More information is required on the matter… I think it will be clearer by evening," he said.

Steps on to take number of 'Lakhpati Didis' to 2 crore by Aug 15: Chouhan
Nearly 1.5 crore women have already become 'Lakhpati Didis' in India and the Centre is making efforts to raise the figure to 2 crore by August 15, Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said. 'Lakhpati Didi' refers to a woman member of a Self-Help Group (SHG) who earns an income of ₹1 lakh or more per year. Mr. Chouhan on Saturday (July 19, 2025) visited the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - Directorate of Groundnut Research in Junagadh town of Gujarat, where he reviewed its activities and interacted with farmers and Lakhpati Didis of SHGs, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) said in a release. In his address, Mr. Chouhan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a resolve to make every woman a Lakhpati Didi. "Why should any woman remain poor? This campaign is being run across India. Till now, 1.5 crore women have already become Lakhpati Didis and my department is constantly taking steps to make 2 crore women Lakhpati Didis by August 15," he said. In Junagadh, there are women who are already earning more than ₹10 lakh per year, the Minister pointed out. "Women living in rural areas have proven that they can do wonders if they are provided with opportunity, training and bank linkage. These women are the true torchbearers of 'Vocal for Local'. I am confident that these women will build a 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India) as envisioned by PM Modi," said the Minister, who also handles the rural development portfolio. Mr. Chouhan lauded women for their contribution in this regard. "Keep pushing forward with courage. PM Modi himself stands with you to ensure all possible support. Plans are underway to increase women's participation in the industrial sector. The hard work of women will help build a Viksit Bharat as envisioned by the PM," he said. Stating that agriculture is still the backbone of Indian economy and for him, the Union minister said serving farmers is equal to worshipping God. "I don't just sit in my Delhi office. Instead, I visit agricultural fields, interact with farmers and try to provide a solution to their problems. Our PM also gives highest priority to agriculture," Mr. Chouhan said in his address. Earlier on Saturday (July 19, 2025), Mr. Chouhan offered prayers at the famous Somnath temple in Gir Somnath district and visited the Devaliya Safari Park near Gir National Park at Sasan.

‘Not against Gandhi family': Tharoor justifies article criticising Emergency
KOCHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday attempted to justify his controversial article criticizing the 1975 Emergency while clarifying that he 'said nothing against the Gandhi family'. Tharoor, who invited the wrath of senior party leaders through his controversial article, appeared to have mellowed down from his earlier stance. 'What I have written now was just similar to my writings in 1997, and has said nothing against the Gandhi family. I've (only) mentioned some individuals and incidents that happened at that time (Emergency),' the senior Congress leader told reporters here on the sidelines of a function organised by the Council for Community Co-operation at TDM Hall. Earlier, in his sharply worded article, which appeared on certain online platforms, Tharoor termed the 21-month Emergency (1975–77) a 'dark period' in India's democratic history and accused former prime minister Indira Gandhi of authoritarian overreach. He went further, calling out her son Sanjay Gandhi for 'terrible atrocities' such as forced sterilisation and the use of violence in rural areas. Tharoor wrote that the period 'severely tested the fundamental guarantees of equality, liberty, and fraternity' and left a lasting scar on Indian politics. Tharoor also defended his praising the Narendra Modi government over Operation Sindoor, saying that one has to prioritise national security over a political party. 'When people like me say that we respect our parties, we have certain values and convictions that keep us in our parties, but we need to cooperate with other parties in the interest of national security,' Tharoor said, while replying to a query. India's electronics exports cross $40 billion: Vaishnaw
Hyderabad: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday announced a major leap in India's electronics manufacturing sector, stating that exports have crossed the $40 billion mark — an eight-fold growth over the past 11 years. Domestic electronics production has also increased by 6 times, reflecting a strong upward trajectory in India's digital economy. Speaking at the 14th Convocation of IIT Hyderabad, Vaishnaw attributed this exponential rise to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's strategic vision. 'In just 11 years, we've multiplied electronics production six times and exports eight times. This kind of double-digit CAGR is rare globally,' said Vaishnaw. Highlighting India's advancements in telecommunications, Vaishnaw revealed that the country had successfully developed a complete 4G telecom stack within three and a half years. The stack is now deployed across nearly 90,000 telecom towers, surpassing the network coverage of many developed nations. To enhance innovation, the government has established 100 dedicated 5G labs, providing students with hands-on experience in real-world applications of next-generation wireless technologies. Turning to the semiconductor sector, the minister stated that India is poised to manufacture its first commercial-scale Made-in-India chip within this year. He expressed optimism that India would soon rank among the top five semiconductor-producing nations, highlighting the country's increasing focus on capital equipment and materials crucial for chip manufacturing. Vaishnaw also announced a large-scale talent development initiative aimed at skilling the semiconductor workforce. The Centre has distributed the latest Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools from global leaders — Cadence, Synopsys, and Siemens — to 270 colleges and institutions. Including startups, the reach extends to 340 institutions. 'No other country has launched a semiconductor talent program of this magnitude,' Vaishnaw remarked. In the transport sector, India's first bullet train is making steady progress, and it is expected to be operational by August or September 2027.
