‘Out of touch': Mamdani's old prison remarks resurface; law enforcement slams NYC hopeful

New York mayoral front-runner
Zohran Mamdani
previously questioned the 'purpose' of jails and prisons, drawing sharp criticism from law enforcement officials on Friday, who condemned the remarks as 'out of touch' and potentially dangerous.
'I think that frankly, I mean, what purpose do they serve, right?' Mamdani said in August 2020 when a co-host of 'The Far Left Show' asked him whether he believed prisons were obsolete, reported the New York Post.
'I think we have to ask ourselves that … I think a lot of people who defend the carceral state, that defend the idea of it and the way it makes them feel, they're not defending the reality of it and the practices that are part and parcel of it,' Mamdani added.
'Because if you actually break it down … how many people come out the prison system better than they went into the prison system?'

The clip, which resurfaced on social media this week after being posted by the 'End Wokeness' account and widely circulated in conservative circles, sparked backlash within the law enforcement community.
In the interview he asked 'how much harm is actually being prevented versus created' while referring to incarceration of offenders.

'I think when you ask these kinds of questions, people don't always have clear answers, what they always want to pivot to is 'What are you going to do about murderers?' and 'What are you going to do about rapists?' and sometimes you have to ask them, 'What are you doing about them right now?'' he added.
'It's scary that a mayoral candidate could be this out of touch with the realities of living in communities that have historically experienced violence and crime,' a source said, as per the New York Post.
'Sounds like he will change his tune once he realizes how unhinged that sounds in the real world.'
'It's the poor neighborhoods that the stalker, domestic abuser, and shooting recidivist will return [to],' said another law enforcement source. 'But the rules of civil society that make this city the luxury item most of Zohran's constituency want to live in is a product of that, bad people in jail so they can pretend they live on a movie set.'
'Letting criminals walk the streets without any repercussions is not repairing anything,' said a Manhattan cop.
Mamdani has previously expressed his stance on prisons stating, 'White supremacy has many faces, from the police & prison systems in America to occupation & apartheid in Palestine,' he posted on X in 2020.
GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa, who is set to face Mamdani in the November general election, denounced the resurfaced clip, calling it 'absolutely preposterous.'
'Of course we need jails to keep dangerous individuals off our streets,' Sliwa stated. 'But he is no different than Eric Adams who is shutting down Rikers or Andrew Cuomo who pushed to close it while celebrating the shutdown of over 18 state prisons and passing laws that coddle criminals and let them avoid the jail time they deserve.'
Zohran Mamdani has defeated Dormer governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary in New York City. The general elections are scheduled for November.

‘They don't talk…they only shoot us': 32 Palestinians shot dead while reaching US group's food distribution sites

Israeli troops opened fire on Saturday at crowds of Palestinians attempting to access food from aid distribution centres in southern Gaza, killing at least 32 people, according to witnesses and hospital officials. The incident occurred near facilities run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a group backed by the US and Israel that began operations in May. The initiative aims to replace the UN-led aid system, which the U.S. and Israel claim is exploited by Hamas, an allegation the UN denies, as reported by AP. While GHF says it has distributed millions of meals to hungry Palestinians, local health officials and witnesses say Israeli army fire has killed hundreds of people as they try to reach the hubs. GHF's four sites are in military-controlled zones, AP reported. GHF said that there were no incidents at or near its sites and added, 'We have repeatedly warned aid seekers not to travel to our sites overnight and early morning hours." Most of the fatalities on Saturday took place about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid center near the southern city of Khan Younis. According to witness Akram Aker, Israeli troops used machine guns mounted on tanks and drones to open fire between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. 'They surrounded us and began shooting directly at us,' Aker said, adding that he saw numerous people lying wounded or dead on the ground, as reported by AP. Sanaa al-Jaberi said that there was shooting after the site opened as people seeking aid broke into a run. 'Is this food or death? Why? They don't talk with us, they only shoot us,' she said, and showed off her empty bag. Gaza's population of over 2 million faces a severe humanitarian crisis. Aid distribution at Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) sites is often disorderly, with food boxes placed on the ground and crowds rushing in to grab supplies, according to witnesses and GHF-released footage. The ongoing 21-month war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Around 50 hostages remain, though fewer than half are believed to be alive. Israel's military response has killed over 58,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between civilian and militant deaths. The ministry, run by the Hamas-led government, is still regarded by the U.N. and other international bodies as the most reliable source for casualty figures.

Woman's murder in Illinois: Judge sets Mexican illegal free; ICE arrests him back

Representative Image (AI-generated) A Mexican national accused of decapitating a missing Illinois woman and hiding her body in a bleach-filled container was re-arrested by US immigration authorities on Saturday (local time) in Chicago, months after he was released from custody despite facing serious charges. Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, a 52-year-old resident of Waukegan, Illinois, was first arrested in April after police discovered the body of 37-year-old Megan Bos in a container in his backyard. He was charged with concealing a corpse, abusing a corpse and obstruction of justice, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). However, shortly after his first court appearance, Lake County Judge Randie Bruno released Mendoza-Gonzalez under the provisions of Illinois' Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today (SAFE-T) Act. The decision drew sharp criticism from public officials who questioned the release of someone accused of such a heinous crime. On Saturday, Mendoza-Gonzalez was taken back into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a market in Chicago. He now remains in ICE detention, DHS confirmed. The body of Megan Bos, who had been reported missing on March 9, was found in April. According to her family, she was last seen in February. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo Investigators allege that Mendoza-Gonzalez kept Bos's body in his basement for two days before moving it to the yard, where it remained concealed for nearly two months. DHS officials said that Bos had been decapitated and her remains were found inside a container filled with bleach. "It is absolutely repulsive this monster walked free on Illinois' streets after allegedly committing such a heinous crime," a DHS spokesperson said. "Megan Bos and her family will have justice," as reported by Fox News. After Mendoza-Gonzalez's release in April, Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner criticized the laws that allowed the suspect's release. "I was shocked to find out literally the next day that the person that they had arrested for this had been released from prison under the SAFE-T Act less than, detained less, I think, than 48 hours," Gartner said. Gartner emphasized that there are several other serious factors in this case, including the nature of the crime, how long it was hidden, and the fact that the suspect is not a US citizen and could potentially flee the country. Mendoza-Gonzalez reportedly told authorities that Bos had overdosed at his home. Instead of calling 911, he allegedly broke her phone and kept her body in the basement for two days before moving it outside. Republican State Representative Tom Weber also expressed his concern about Mendoza-Gonzalez's release in April. "Someone that hid their body in a garbage can for 51 days after leaving it in the basement for two days, after not calling 911 [and] breaking a phone. Is this a non-detainable offense?" Weber said. "Should we not find out, wait for a toxicology report, anything?"

ED summons Google, Meta in betting apps case

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate has summoned representatives of tech giants Meta and Google as part of a money laundering investigation against a number of illegal online betting platforms, official sources said on Saturday. The executives have been asked to depose before the agency on July 21 here and get their statements recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. There was no immediate response from the two companies. The federal agency is probing multiple platforms hosting illegal betting and gambling links, including instances of advertisements placed for them on various Internet-based social media outlets and app stores. The tech giants are understood to have been called by the ED to understand how such illegal platforms are able to place advertisements on their social media and communication links. Some actors, celebrities and sports persons are also under the scanner of the agency in these cases, and they are also expected to be summoned by the ED soon. The ED has said illegal online betting and gambling platforms were cheating innocent people of their hard-earned money and also laundering and evading taxes worth crores of rupees.
