EXCLUSIVE SJP investment boss warns US risk profile has 'fundamentally changed'

Daily Mail12-07-2025
St James's Place has cut exposure to US stocks within its £16.4billion Polaris 4 fund as the wealth manager becomes increasingly wary of the world's biggest market.
US stocks have endured a rollercoaster 2025 after rebounding from heavy losses suffered in the wake of President Donald Trump's 'liberation day' trade tariffs.
'It's difficult to argue that US equities aren't riskier today than they were in the past,' Justin Onuekwusi, chief investment officer at St. James's Place, told This is Money.
'This isn't about trying to call the top of the market. It's about acknowledging that the risk profile of US equities has fundamentally changed.
'If an investor's risk appetite hasn't shifted, it's hard to justify allocating more to an increasingly concentrated and expensive market.'
The wealth manager has shifted its exposure away from the US, and now holds underweight positions across the board.
SJP said its underweight position is consistent in all of its portfolios.
For its Polaris 4 fund, part of its flagship Polaris range, this means shifting to a 15 per cent underweight position in US equities.
SJP said this is a deviation equivalent to as much as £2.4billion compared with a market-cap weighted global benchmark.
The fund holds a 48 per cent weighting towards the US. Though still significant, this compares to a 66 per cent weighting held by the MSCI ACWI index.
Onuekwusi said: 'The US remains our single largest regional equity allocation. But given current valuations and concentration, we believe a more balanced, risk-conscious allocation is appropriate.'
Polaris 4 instead holds a significantly higher allocation to Europe and the UK, at 18 per cent and nine per cent respectively, compared with 13 per cent and three per cent for the MSCI ACWI.
Justin Onuekwusi, chief investment officer at St. James's Place, says US equities are riskier today than they have been in the past
Onuekwusi says the risk associated with the US market has changed, and as a result it is 'justify allocating more to an increasingly concentrated and expensive market', if an investor's risk appetite hasn't shifted.
He added that the lower weighting towards the US is 'not just due to political uncertainty', but 'a combination of market concentration and stretched valuations across many US companies'.
High valuations in the US market, which accounts for two-thirds of global stocks, has been a topic of market concern for some time.
This week chip giant Nvidia surpassed $4trillion in market cap, meaning that it is worth all of the UK's publicly listed firms combined.
'The top 10 US stocks now represent more than a third of the US market, the highest level of concentration in over 60 years,' Onuekwusi said.
'Despite some recent sector reclassifications, such as Amazon moving from Technology to Consumer Discretionary, the index remains heavily tech-oriented, reminiscent of late-1990s market dynamics.
'We are positioning away from US mega-cap stocks in favour of a more balanced exposure to large and small caps - a consistent stance across Polaris 1 through 4.'
The magnificent seven companies, that is Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Nvidia and Tesla, currently accounts for almost 34 per cent of the S&P 500's total value.
Onuekwusi added: 'Over the past 18 months, while maintaining our US underweight, we have shifted our overweight from Emerging Markets into a broader allocation across the UK and Europe. This repositioning has helped add resilience, particularly during periods of tariff-related uncertainty and in the subsequent recovery.'
He added: 'Our decision to underweight US equities in Polaris 4 reflects a belief that more compelling risk-adjusted opportunities currently lie outside the US markets. Both our medium-term asset allocation and our bottom-up analysis - driven by our primarily active manager lineup - point to stronger prospects in regions such as Europe, the UK, Japan, and Emerging Markets, where we are currently overweight.
Combined with the US' higher concentration in global markets, is the large valuations many US equities are exhibiting.
Onuekwusi says valuations are reaching the levels seen during the dotcom bubble, highlighting concerns over their future.
Nvidia, for example, is currently operating on a price to earnings ratio of 32.8, while Amazon is at 32.9 and Tesla operates at an eye watering PE ratio of 132.6.
He said: 'Investors are paying a premium for future earnings growth, which reduces the margin for error. If that growth doesn't materialise, share prices become more vulnerable to correction. The higher the valuation, the less cushion there is against disappointment.'

How Delta amenity kits changed across the decades, from shoehorns to spa-grade toiletries

The golden age of air travel is long gone, but the business-class amenity kit is one luxury introduced in that era between the 50s and 70s that is still with us. Delta introduced it in 1978, at the tail end of the period, and has been keeping a photographic record of its evolution. The fascinating pictures serve as time capsules that offer insights into aircraft etiquette of the day and reveal how amenity kits went from being merely practical to designer collectibles. First, we step back in time, to an age long before AI pricing and online check-ins, when according to the amenity kits, fuzz-free clothing and being able to remove one's shoes with ease were the priorities for wealthy fliers. 1978 Delta's first amenity kits arrived in 1978, when the carrier was using Boeing 747s and Lockheed TriStars for long-haul travel. One of the kits featured a white bag, Pepsodent toothpaste, a comb, hand lotion, a hand towel, and a large nail file. Yes, doing your nails mid-flight was a top priority. Another brown and beige offering featured Michaud shaving cream and hand and body lotion, along with a razor and eye mask. Milestones for the carrier in the 70s included the introduction of the first transatlantic service from Atlanta to London, and audio in-flight entertainment. 1985 Notable inclusions of the 1985 amenity kit were a lint mitt for removing clothing fluff and dust and a shoehorn. Bizarre? Not really, this was, after all, a time when people would don formal attire to fly business class, a concept alien to today's tracksuit-wearing one-percenters. The goody bag also contained a toothbrush kit, shave cream, mouthwash and moisturizing lotion, along with a comb and a nail file. By this time, Delta had introduced computer-generated boarding and automated advance seat selection. 1987 This picture shows a 1987 amenity kit, which includes a pair of blue Delta slippers, with the rest of the kit unchanged. In this year, Western Airlines merged with Delta, making it the fourth-largest US carrier and the fifth-largest world carrier, with new hubs in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. It was also the year that Delta began trans-Pacific services to Tokyo. 1995 In 1995, the amenity kit took a step up, with Delta partnering with Essentiel Elements, known for its spa-grade toiletries. The kit included an aromatherapy towelette by the firm, along with a 'disc case' for CDs (remember those?), and Rembrandt toothpaste and mouth rinse. By that time, Delta had purchased Pan Am and introduced onboard recycling. And in 1995, Delta introduced the airline industry's first seasonal menus and became the first US airline to ban smoking on all flights worldwide. 1996 In 1996, Delta's business-class customers were treated to an enticing bundle, with Essential Elements lotions and potions still in place. In that year, a Delta plane carried the Olympic flame from Athens to Los Angeles for the 1996 Torch Relay to Atlanta. Watershed moments, meanwhile, were customers being able to make reservations and purchase tickets via Delta's website, SkyLinks, and Delta becoming the first airline to offer in-seat power and live broadcast television programming. 2001 This tin of delights, which included L'Occitane creams, arrived in 2001. This year also saw Delta install self-service airport kiosks, allowing customers to check-in and print boarding passes. 2006 The year 2006 saw the introduction of a vibrant red amenity kit with Lather products and playful inscriptions, such as "do not disturb, save me a snack" on a privacy notice. And in 2006 Delta became the first major airline with in-seat, on-demand movies, games and live TV on a large portion of its domestic fleet. Another first was the introduction of Delta flights to southern Africa, with a service to Johannesburg via Dakar, Senegal, launched. 2007 Lather products also featured in the blue and red 2007 amenity kit. The look of the airline changed in this year, with the carrier adopting a new three-dimensional red widget logo and livery. And an open skies agreement between the US and the European Union paved the way for services to Heathrow, which would launch the following year. New for 2025 Delta is rolling out "collectible" new amenity kits by Missoni in the fall "designed to reflect the colors of the sky". These will come in blue and cream and include "crew-length" socks; a breathable eye mask; an "upgraded" pen featuring "metal accents and Delta One branding"; Grown Alchemist skincare products in "elevated aluminum tubes"; a bamboo toothbrush; Marvis toothpaste; and earplugs. Delta is also launching a new bedding set by Missoni.

Fat cat water regulator bosses get millions of pounds in salaries while failing to get a grip on the sewage crisis

GREEDY water regulator bosses paid themselves millions in salaries while failing to get a grip on the sewage crisis. Ofwat's senior management team netted more than £2 million in pay last year. 2 Chief exec David Black received a total remuneration package of £250,000 to £255,000 including pension. The failing regulator also handed out over £6 million to external consultants in two years, according to official contracts. It comes as Ofwat is set to be abolished under reforms announced on Monday. The useless watchdog has been blasted for failing to stop water companies spewing sewage into waterways while lining the pockets of their shareholders. Now it can be revealed the regulator has been spaffing taxpayer cash on companies for communication advice and training staff for grillings by MPs. A £15,000 contract was given to Moxy Communications for advice including 'training for Select Committees'. This is despite Ofwat having around 16 people on their comms team with salaries for their senior director advertised at around £105,000. Recently, advisors Strand Partners won a £100,000 seven-month contract to 'reduce the pressure on Ofwat and free up resource'. 2 A separate £30,000 contract was spent on an online tool to schedule content to go live on Ofwat social media channels. And another £80,000 went on a 'social listening tool' to 'gain valuable insights' from social and digital media. Senior Lib Dem MP Tim Farron said: 'It is shocking that Ofwat bosses have the audacity to award themselves millions for failure, and this unnecessary spending is an insult to every single bill payer who sees their charges rocket, while the state of our waterways plummets. 'This isn't just incompetence; it's a betrayal of public trust and we need a radical overhaul. 'It's time to pull the plug on Ofwat. We need a powerful, new regulator that can finally force these companies to clean up their act and stop the sewage scandal for good.' Tory shadow environment secretary Victoria Atkins said: 'As families watch bills rise by the month, Ofwat bosses are busy signing off million-pound consultancy contracts and paying themselves bumper salaries. "Spending £80,000 to listen to tweets and £15,000 on Select Committee coaching is a slap in the face to every household footing the bill.' For the first time the Government will promise to cut sewage pollution with a clear deadline. Environment Secretary Steve Reed has announced that pollution from water companies will be cut in half by the end of the decade. And a record £104 billion is being invested to upgrade crumbling pipes and build new sewage treatment works. He said: 'One of the largest infrastructure projects in England's history will clean up our rivers, lakes and seas for good.' He is expected to announce a consultation on creating a new regulator to coincide with the results of a major review into the water industry directed by former Bank of England deputy governor Sir Jon Cunliffe. An Ofwat spokesperson said Mr Black's salary takes account of the 'scale, complexity and challenges of the role'. They added: 'Decisions on pay and bonuses for the Senior Leadership Team are made by the Board's People Committee in line with guidance from the Cabinet Office and the Senior Salaries Review Body. The process and the salary increase applied was in accordance with the Government pay guidance for Senior Civil Servants.'

Company says investigation under way into footage of couple at Coldplay gig

Astronomer, the company at the center of the Coldplay scandal in which its CEO was caught canoodling with its chief human resources officer, has finally issued a statement on the matter. More than 24 hours after a Jumbotron camera at a Coldplay concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts, caught the software company's married CEO, Andy Byron, with his arms around the company's HR head, Kristin Cabot, Astronomer has responded to the incident which has taken the internet by storm. On X, the software startup company said: 'Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability. The Board of Directors has initiated a formal investigation into this matter and we will have additional details to share very shortly.' It also denied rumors that another one of its employees, Alyssa Stoddard, was there, as well as denied false reports of Byron issuing an apology. 'Alyssa Stoddard was not at the event and no other employees were in the video. Andy Byron has not put out any statement, reports saying otherwise are all incorrect,' the company said. Both Byron and Cabot were immediately placed on leave, a source familiar with the situation told Axios. Additionally, Astronomer's delayed response has partially been because of Byron's slow resignation and exit package negotiations, another source told the outlet. Byron has been the head of Astronomer since 2023. In 2024, Cabot joined the company as its head of HR. In an announcement about Cabot's hiring, Byron said: 'Kristin's exceptional leadership and deep expertise in talent management, employee engagement and scaling people strategies will be critical as we continue our rapid trajectory.' Meanwhile, in the same press release, Cabot said: 'I was energised in my conversations with Andy and the Astronomer leadership team about the opportunities that exist here.' This article was amended on 19 July 2025. An earlier version said the Coldplay concert was in Boston, Massachusetts. In fact, it was at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, about 22 miles south-west of Boston.
