India's Jasprit Bumrah, Smriti Mandhana win top Wisden awards

TimesLIVE22-04-2025

India duo Jasprit Bumrah and Smriti Mandhana have been crowned the world's leading cricketers in the latest edition of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.
Bumrah won the honour in the men's section after a stellar 2024 when he excelled across formats and was named player of the tournament as India won the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.
'In an eventful year for Indian cricket, their success depended largely, if not entirely, on one factor: whether or not he had the ball,' the publication wrote about the 31-year-old, who is considered the best all-format bowler of his era.

2 former Proteas back in court in October as match-fixing case continues

JOHANNESBURG - Two former Proteas, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Thami Tsolekile, will be back in the Palm Ridge Commercial Crimes Court in October as the high-profile match-fixing case against them continues to unfold. The case dates back to a 2015-2016 Ram Slam T20 tournament, where a network of former cricketers allegedly worked with illegal bookmakers to fix match outcomes for cash. This week, former fast bowler Ntaketo Mbalati became the fourth ex-player to be convicted. He was handed a five-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to corruption. Hawks investigators said the scheme involved at least six players who were approached by a former Protea and Indian syndicates to fix key moments in domestic games. "Corruption undermines the integrity of sport and the Hawks are determined to safeguard the values of fairness and professionalism in all of society. We thank Cricket SA for their co-operation and commitment to addressing this scourge," said Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale. Tsotsobe and Tsolekile were both banned by Cricket South Africa in 2016 after an internal probe but now face criminal charges, alongside former player Jean Symes. The case has been postponed to 7 October.

New Zealand cricket names SA's Rob Walter as new coach in all formats

South African Rob Walter was appointed New Zealand coach in all formats on Friday in the wake of Gary Stead's decision to stand down after seven years in charge. Stead announced on Wednesday that he would be leaving the job of test coach at the end of the month, having already relinquished the short format roles in April. Walter, 49, was most recently coach of South Africa's one-day international and Twenty20 teams but knows New Zealand cricket well after stints in charge of provincial teams as well as his time overseeing a Black Caps "A" tour of India in 2022. "The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time now and it's a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that," Walter said in a New Zealand Cricket statement. "It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested." Walter, who led South Africa to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup and final of last year's Twenty20 World Cup, is contracted through to the end of the 2028 World Cup, which New Zealand is co-hosting with Australia. "Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree," said NZC chief executive Scott Weenink. "His success in New Zealand's domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps." New Zealand's next international matches come in July at the start of their tour of Zimbabwe, where they will play two tests and a Twenty20 tri-series also involving South Africa.

India police arrest two after deadly cricket stampede

At least 11 people were killed in a stampede on June 4, as a tightly packed crowd celebrated the victory of their home cricket team in the Indian city of Bengaluru. Image: STRINGER / AFP Indian police arrested two people including a senior executive at IPL-winning cricket team Royal Challengers Bengaluru after 11 fans were crushed to death during victory celebrations, local media reported Friday. Hundreds of thousands had packed the streets in the southern tech city Bengaluru on Wednesday to welcome home their hero Virat Kohli and his RCB team-mates after they beat Punjab Kings in a thrilling final of the Indian Premier League. But the euphoria of the vast crowds ended in disaster when 11 mainly young fans died in a stampede near the city's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the players were parading the trophy. Media outlet India Today said Friday that Nikhil Sosale, RCB's head of marketing, was arrested at the Bengaluru airport. The Indian Express newspaper reported Sosale was arrested, along with an executive from the event management company DNA. The reported arrests come hours after Karnataka state's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that "legal action has been taken against the representatives of RCB", as well as the event organisers, and the state's cricket association. Siddaramaiah said a first information report, which marks the start of a police investigation, had been "registered against them". Local media reported that the charges include culpable homicide, not amounting to murder, among others. Siddaramaiah, who only uses one name, said top police officers in Bengaluru, including the city's police commissioner, have been suspended. "These officers appear to be irresponsible and negligent, and it has been decided to suspend them," Siddaramaiah said. The dead were mostly young fans, aged between 14 and 29, who were among a sea of people who had poured onto the streets to catch a glimpse of their heroes. RCB offered financial aid of $11,655 to each family of those killed, calling the deaths "unfortunate". Indian media have widely reported the team earned $2.3 million in prize money alone for taking the title on Wednesday. Kohli, who top-scored in the final, said he was "at a loss for words" after celebrations of a dream IPL crown turned to tragedy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the accident "absolutely heartrending". Siddaramaiah said earlier that the stadium had a capacity of "only 35,000 people, but 200,000-300,000 people came". AFP
