Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is this generation's version of the LeBron James
Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is this generation's version of the LeBron James Swiss Army knife player. Or at least that is the position of the eponymous host of the "Hoops Tonight with Jason Timpf" podcast host on a recent episode of his show. And if you squint a bit, the comparison rings true.
The St. Louis native is an athletic, physical forward with a high basketball IQ and few faults in his game apart from not being one of the league's most elite shots from beyond the arc. He gets where he wants when he wants, and can control the game to suit his intent.
Most importantly, when he is locked in, it is over for his opponents. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what Timpf had to say about Tatum's latest evolution as a player.

Detailed metrics show Marcus Smart is still a very good defender

While plenty of people are optimistic about Marcus Smart coming to the Lakers and the impact he will have, there are a few who have lesser expectations. The skeptics point out the fact that Smart has played in just 54 games over the last two seasons due to multiple injuries and say that his game, especially his defensive ability, has declined. Over the years, Smart has been one of the NBA's defensive guards. He made three All-Defensive first teams and was named the 2021-22 Defensive Player of the Year, and during his first nine seasons, he played a key role in the Boston Celtics becoming contenders while consistently being a defensive menace. A look at some detailed, advanced stats shows that perhaps the claims of Smart's demise have been exaggerated. X (formerly Twitter) user Cranjis McBasketball shared some metrics related to Smart's defense over the last three seasons, and they indicate very little, if any, decline on that end of the court. The stats cited were obtained from Smart has not only been an outstanding point-of-attack defender, something the Lakers desperately need, but he also can scale up and effectively guard the 2 and even the 3 position. He also possesses high basketball IQ and anticipation, which allows him to bust plays and force turnovers. If there is a legitimate concern with Smart, other than his injury history, it is his 3-point shooting. For his career, he has made just 32.4% of his 3-point attempts, and in particular, he struggles in catch-and-shoot situations. While playing for the Lakers, he will need to hit quite a few shots off of passes, as he will have to defer offensively to Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves. On the other hand, he's a capable secondary ball-handler and facilitator, so perhaps he will have the ball in his hands more than some expect. But as long as he remains healthy, he should be a major game-changer on the defensive end for L.A.

Is Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum criminally underrated?

It didn't take long for Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum to put together a Hall of Fame resume. The 27-year-old is already a six-time All-Star, four-time All-NBA First Teamer, and an NBA champion. In spite of these impressive accolades, the St. Louis native is constantly underrated. He led the Celtics in playoff points, rebounds, and assists en route to their 2024 title, yet missed out on NBA Finals MVP honors. Later that summer, Tatum was overlooked again at the Olympics, seeing the court for just 11 minutes during Team USA's gold medal game against France. Perhaps Tatum's true value will be on full display next season as he rehabs a ruptured Achilles. The Duke alum could miss the entire 2025-26 campaign, putting the Celtics' championship aspirations in serious jeopardy. But even as he rests, basketball pundits are still trying to rank Tatum. In fact, Bleacher Report just listed him as the 93rd-best player in NBA history, placing him behind arguably less accomplished players like Chris Webber and Jimmy Butler. On a recent episode of NESN's 'Hold My Banner,' hosts Adam Pellerin and Ountae Campbell debated Tatum's standing on the extensive Bleacher Report list, going as far as calling the rankings 'blasphemous.'
