Tourism businesses in Hay River, N.W.T., question gov't priorities with new building project
The territory's Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment says that the new facility will replace a beach attendant building destroyed in the 2022 flood. The new structure will be a lifeguard station and picnic shelter, with a stronger foundation to handle future flooding.
But Jane Groenewegen, who owns Harbour House, a guesthouse just across from the beach, says she was shocked to see construction begin last week without any public notice or signs explaining what was going on.
"We didn't see anything posted. And we're down here quite often," she said. "Whenever there's a development, there's usually a 90-day appeal period where people can comment on what's proposed."
Groenewegen said she's frustrated that there was no opportunity for public input, especially since many other tourism-related sites in the community still need to be repaired after flooding and fire damage.
She said that while the new building may replace something that was lost, it's the wrong time and the wrong place for it. She also doesn't understand why the territory chose a location that has already seen serious flood damage.
"Who asked for this? Yes, it's replacing something, but the timing is off. The beach is a disaster," she said. "The beach is just kind of a swamp now that goes from one end to the other."
Groenewegen said the flooding dramatically changed the landscape. The shoreline has receded, and the sand is now overgrown with poisonous vegetation, such as water hemlock. Dead trees still line the campground.
She said the beach isn't the only area that still needs attention. At Twin Falls Territorial Park, a major tourist attraction located just outside Hay River, the trails and stairs to the falls remain uncleared since the 2023 wildfires, leaving the site in a rough state and unsafe for visitors.
"Our government always says they're so hard up … they got no money for capital projects," she said. "But they got [money] for something that nobody asked for."
'We've had our difficulties'
Darrell Dean, who owns Castaways Cottages and Campground on the other side of town, says the new building going up at the beach isn't a top concern for him, but he agrees that there are more urgent priorities in the community that the territory should address first.
"I'd rather see them spend their money cleaning the beach up, because nobody's going to go there to stay in a swamp," he said. "It just doesn't make any sense."
Dean says he's still trying to recover from the wildfires that burned through his site in 2023, destroying trees, campers, and four cabins.
"We've been hit with a couple years of COVID, and then ... a couple years of flood and then a forest fire. So we've had our difficulties," he said.
Dean said his campground wasn't insured when the fire hit, because there are no fire hydrants in the area, and coverage has become increasingly complex and expensive to get. Without insurance, he had to cover the cost of replacing everything himself.
On top of that, he says one of the biggest challenges he faces is competing with the territorial-run campground, which offers amenities like wi-fi in certain areas, power hookups, and lower rates. He says private operators like himself can't match those prices.
"We can't afford to put that kind of money on infrastructure and then charge that little amount of money," Dean said. "The going rate down south … is anywhere from $60 to $125 a night to stay in a campground. We're well below par on the rates."
For Dean, offering basic services like power is not financially feasible. He estimates it would cost around $150,000 to install electricity at his campground.
Dean said that the territory's infrastructure department has supported him with funding in the past, but large-scale upgrades, such as power installations, remain out of reach for private operators, and he's not aware of any funding program that could cover such high costs.
"[The territory] should be investing money in local tour operators, I think, because it's a plus for everybody," he said.
Ongoing municipal issues don't help either, he said. His road often isn't plowed or graded, and a flood-damaged culvert still hasn't been properly fixed, making it hard for large campers to reach the site. He says it took over a decade of complaints to get consistent road maintenance.

Yes, the same BlackBerry that once dominated your high school group chats is now powering the world's most secure communications and autonomous vehicles. And with shares down roughly 42% from 52-week highs, it may be one of the most magnificent Canadian tech stocks to buy and hold forever. About BlackBerry Before diving into why BlackBerry deserves a spot in your long-term portfolio, let's look at how far it has come. This isn't the same company that fizzled out in the smartphone wars. BlackBerry has completely reinvented itself, leaning into cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and embedded automotive software. It has gone from making phones to powering them, under the hood, literally. BlackBerry's recent earnings report for Q1 fiscal 2026 is a strong sign that the strategy is working. Revenue came in at $121.7 million, beating guidance. That's no small feat in today's macro environment. It also posted adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of $16.4 million, another beat. The turnaround isn't just a one-quarter wonder. Its QNX segment, used in over 235 million cars globally, delivered $57.5 million in revenue, up 8% year over year. The division also produced an impressive adjusted EBITDA margin of 22%. Secure Communications, which includes government-grade cybersecurity offerings, posted $59.5 million in revenue and a 70% gross margin. Both segments beat guidance. That's not luck. That's execution. Why the dip? Despite the strong performance, BlackBerry stock is trading at around $5.09, far below its 52-week high of $8.86. That's a 42% drop, even though the business itself is in better shape than it has been in years. Part of this disconnect is due to the broader tech sell-off and investor fatigue from its past disappointments, not to mention meme stock history. But long-term investors know that price and value are not the same. From a valuation perspective, BlackBerry is now trading at 4 times sales and 3 times book value. Its forward price-to-earnings ratio sits at 36.1, which isn't outrageous for a tech company with renewed profitability, a clean balance sheet, and exposure to high-growth areas like embedded systems and cybersecurity. What to watch Cash is another feather in its cap. BlackBerry ended the quarter with $381.9 million in total cash and investments, compared to $235.7 million in debt. That gives it the flexibility to invest in growth or return capital to shareholders, which it did, buying back 2.6 million shares this quarter. In fact, the company just launched a share buyback program that shows it believes the stock is undervalued. Of course, it's not all smooth sailing. The company is still in the midst of proving its relevance in today's fast-moving tech world. Quarterly revenue fell slightly year over year, and the Secure Communications' net revenue retention rate dipped from 93% to 92%. But these are manageable bumps on an otherwise improving road. Looking ahead, BlackBerry is guiding for up to $538 million in total revenue for fiscal 2026 and non-GAAP earnings per share between $0.08 and $0.10. For a stock priced just over $5, that's compelling. It means investors are buying into a rare Canadian company that offers software-driven recurring revenue, growing margins, and, finally, net income. Bottom line So, is BlackBerry still a long shot? Maybe. But it's a lot less speculative than it used to be. The company has carved out a strong position in automotive tech and cybersecurity – two areas that aren't going anywhere. Its balance sheet is healthy. Its margins are expanding. And it just proved it can turn a profit. In short, this is no longer a turnaround story. It's a comeback. And with shares still deeply discounted from their highs, now may be the time to grab a slice and hold it for the long haul. Parkland's US operating profit plummets as Sunoco sale nears completion

Dive Brief: Parkland Corp.'s adjusted EBITDA in the U.S. during Q2 fell by about 45% compared to the same period last year, continuing a difficult past few quarters in the states for the Canadian retailer, according to the company's earnings report released on Tuesday. Parkland's U.S. segment delivered an adjusted EBITDA of $26 million during the second quarter compared to the $47 million it garnered in Q2 2024, according to the report. Parkland said that the decrease was 'primarily due to ongoing macroeconomic pressures.' The losses come as Parkland — which has 660 c-stores in the U.S. and operates 190 of them directly — nears the estimated Q4 closing of its $9.1 billion sale to oil company Sunoco. Dive Insight: Although Parkland's EBITDA in Canada grew by about $22 million compared to this time last year, it's no surprise that the company's U.S. operating profit continues to plummet given its years of underperformance in the states. Since early 2023, Parkland has made hundreds of staff cuts to its U.S. segment and even explored a sale of its Florida business as operations struggled prior to the Sunoco agreement. The company's full-year revenue in the U.S. fell from $186 million in 2023 to $168 million in 2024, which leadership pinned on unfavorable market conditions causing declines in retail and commercial fuel volumes. Parkland's latest decline marks the third straight quarter in which its adjusted EBITDA in the U.S. has dropped. In Tuesday's report, Parkland said its struggles in the U.S. were 'driven by macroeconomic pressures continuing to impact fuel and convenience demand in line with broader industry trends,' as well as regulatory developments that hindered its ability to optimize its supply opportunities. Despite the struggles, Texas-based Sunoco is 'even more confident' in Parkland's business now than in May when it agreed to acquire the Canadian retailer, President and CEO Joseph Kim said during Sunoco's earnings call on Wednesday. Kim said that Sunoco is 'working diligently' on getting final approvals to close the deal. 'Combining the two companies will be a win for equity holders, debt holders, employees, as well as the countries we operate in,' Kim said. 'As the process plays out, we'll provide more specific details, but for now, we can tell you that we're highly confident that we will deliver double digit accretion while maintaining a strong balance sheet.' Given fuel was the main driver of the acquisition, Sunoco has offered few details on what it intends to do with Parkland's convenience store network once the deal closes. When asked during the call what Sunoco's M&A priorities will be when that happens, Kim again offered few details but added that Sunoco will prioritize integrating Parkland's assets into its network. 'After that, we'll assess the market and see what the market opportunities are,' Kim said. FLINT Announces Transformational Recapitalization
CALGARY, Alberta, Aug. 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FLINT Corp. ("FLINT" or the "Company") (TSX: FLNT) is pleased to announce a proposed recapitalization transaction (the "Recapitalization") that will significantly reduce the Company's debt and annual interest costs, simplify its capital structure and improve liquidity. The Recapitalization is the result of an extensive review process conducted by the Company's board of directors (the "Board"), which culminated in FLINT entering into a definitive recapitalization support agreement (the "Support Agreement") with its largest shareholder and primary lender, Canso Investment Counsel Ltd., in its capacity as portfolio manager for and on behalf of certain accounts that it manages ("Canso"). The Recapitalization is intended to preserve value for the Company's shareholders and better position FLINT to execute on future growth opportunities. Key Terms of the Recapitalization The proposed Recapitalization will be implemented by way of a plan of arrangement ("Plan of Arrangement") under the Business Corporations Act (Alberta) (the "ABCA") and includes the following key elements: all of the Company's 8.00% senior secured debentures of the Company due October 14, 2027 (the "Senior Secured Notes"), in the aggregate principal amount of $135,335,053, together with all interest accrued from and after June 30, 2025, will be exchanged for the issuance of new common shares in the capital of the Company (the "Common Shares") representing approximately 90% of the total number of Common Shares issued and outstanding upon completion of the Recapitalization; all entitlements to accrued and unpaid dividends under the Company's issued and outstanding series 1 cumulative redeemable convertible preferred shares of the Company (the "Series 1 Preferred Shares") and the series 2 cumulative redeemable convertible preferred shares of the Company (the "Series 2 Preferred Shares", and collectively with the Series 1 Preferred Shares, the "Preferred Shares"), will be extinguished; all of the issued and outstanding Preferred Shares will be exchanged for the issuance of new Common Shares representing approximately 7.5% of the total number of Common Shares issued and outstanding upon completion of the Recapitalization; the Common Shares will be consolidated (the "Share Consolidation") on a basis of one post-consolidation Common Share for every 40 pre-consolidated Common Shares; upon completion of the Recapitalization, existing holders of Common Shares ("Common Shareholders") will retain their existing Common Shares, subject to the Share Consolidation, such that the Common Shareholders will own approximately 2.5% of the total number of Common Shares issued and outstanding upon completion of the Recapitalization; in connection with the Recapitalization, the Company has agreed to enter into a registration rights agreement with Canso prior to closing of the Recapitalization, which shall grant Canso certain registration rights in respect of future sales of Common Shares for so long as it beneficially controls at least 10% of the Common Shares; total debt will be reduced by approximately C$135,335,053 and annual cash interest expense reduced by approximately C$10,826,804; obligations to employees, customers and suppliers will not be affected by the Recapitalization and will continue to be satisfied in the ordinary course; and the Company's other existing credit facilities will be unaffected by the Recapitalization. As a result, the Recapitalization will also require approval of a simple majority of the votes cast by Common Shareholders at the applicable Meeting, excluding votes cast by Canso and any of its related parties and joint actors. In addition to the foregoing securityholder approvals, the Recapitalization is subject to regulatory approvals, including the approval of the TSX, as well as the approval of the Court. Details of the Recapitalization and the required securityholder approvals will be included in a management information circular to be mailed by the Company to its securityholders.
