Russo will return as Boca Juniors coach, club spokesman confirms

CNA26-05-2025
BUENOS AIRES :Miguel Angel Russo is set to return as coach of Boca Juniors ahead of the Club World Cup, a club spokesman confirmed on Monday.
Russo will take the reins for his third stint with the Argentine giants, having previously coached the team in 2007 and 2020-2021, leading them to win four titles, including the Copa Libertadores.
After leaving Boca, the experienced 69-year-old coach spent time at Rosario Central and most recently at San Lorenzo, with whom he suffered elimination from the Argentine league semi-finals on Sunday.
"Miguel and I have come to an agreement. All he has to do now is officially sever his ties with San Lorenzo, which should be easy for him," the spokesman told Reuters, declining to offer further details.
Russo will replace Fernando Gago, who was sacked last month after Boca lost the Argentine Superclasico against arch-rivals River Plate and had a poor run including getting knocked out of the Libertadores in the preliminary round.
Boca start their Club World Cup campaign on June 16 in the United States, where they will compete in Group C against Bayern Munich, Benfica and Auckland City.

Lateness costs Bissouma place in Spurs' Super Cup squad, Solanke fit

Frank also confirmed that striker Dominic Solanke will be available for the start of the new season despite featuring in only one of Spurs' pre-season friendlies due to an ankle injury. Speaking on Tuesday before the European season curtain-raiser between the Champions League winners and second-tier Europa League champions, Frank said: "Bissouma has been late several times and now this time, it was one too many. "With everything, you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and have consequences. And this was the consequence of that." New arrival Joao Palhinha, on loan from Bayern Munich, could play in place of Ivory Coast international Bissouma, though Tottenham will be without playmaker James Maddison, who faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury. New manager Frank's tenure could start with a gleam of silverware if Spurs manage to defeat European champions PSG, who were beaten by Chelsea in last month's Club World Cup final. The Dane added that a lighter pre-season since Tottenham's Europa League triumph on May 21 could give his comparatively better-rested side an edge over the French team. Top stories Swipe. Select. In that way, it can be an advantage. But on the flip side, they have had a long season and played a lot of games recently," Frank said. "It's the right time to face PSG. We are ready. I am 100% convinced that it will be very super competitive tomorrow. "But of course, over the whole season they are in a better place to perform better. But in a single game, we will be ready." Though Spurs are without former captain Son Heung-min after his move to MLS side LAFC, Frank said their Argentine World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero would be a key figure. "Romero is going to be a very important and experienced player for the team. He is going to be a very, very big player for us tomorrow," he said. "He is someone who has been in big finals and won them. He definitely knows how to win them." REUTERS

Manchester City's Jack Grealish joins Everton on season-long loan

LIVERPOOL, England - Manchester City winger Jack Grealish joined Everton on loan for the 2025-26 season on Aug 12 in a bid to salvage his troubled career. Grealish fell out of favour with City boss Pep Guardiola last season and made just seven starts in the Premier League. The 29-year-old was left out of City's squad for the Club World Cup in the United States in a clear indication that he was no longer wanted by Guardiola. Everton's deal for Grealish, who earns a reported £300,000 (S$500,000) per week, comes just before the new Premier League campaign starts for the Toffees at Leeds on Aug 18. 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton - it's massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans,' Grealish said. Grealish has chosen the number 18 shirt at Everton in tribute to Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne, who wore it during their time with the club. 'My two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here,' he said. 'I spoke to Wayne before I came here and I mentioned that to him - about the number 18 - so I hope he's happy as well.' Grealish joined City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a then British record fee of £100 million. The England international has won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup with City, but his form had dipped significantly since he played a key role in the 2022-23 treble-winning campaign. 'Only one place I wanted to go' He was left out of England's Euro 2024 squad, an omission that left him 'heartbroken'. Guardiola rarely picked Grealish last season despite City's struggles and he was left on the bench for the shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace. Amid concerns about his personal life after repeated reports of alcohol-fuelled late nights, Grealish will have a chance to revive his spluttering career at Everton and potentially earn a recall to the England squad ahead of next year's World Cup. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go,' Grealish said. 'On social media, I've been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there's that side of it as well and that's another reason why I chose Everton. 'I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I've had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I'm sure I will.' Everton recently left Goodison Park to move into their new Hill Dickinson stadium ahead of the season, with Grealish set to take centre stage in the plush arena. He ranks as Everton's biggest signing since the end of last season after a quiet summer in the transfer market for boss David Moyes. 'We welcome Jack to Everton and we're very pleased to have him on board,' Moyes said. 'I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to. 'I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad, so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season.' AFP

Everton sign Grealish on season-long loan

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LIVERPOOL, England - England midfielder Jack Grealish joined Everton on a season-long loan from Manchester City on Tuesday in a bid to revive his international career. The deal was announced by both clubs. City paid Aston Villa 100 million pounds ($135.08 million) for the player, now 29, in 2021 but he fell out of favour with manager Pep Guardiola and is seeking game time ahead of next year's World Cup. Media reports said Everton, who finished last season 13th overall and are managed by David Moyes, had an option to make the move permanent for 50 million pounds at the end of the loan period. Grealish's current weekly wages have been put at 300,000 pounds. Everton said Grealish would wear the number 18, the same number worn by past club greats Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney. "I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton. It's massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans," the player said in a statement. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Grealish, who had a medical on Monday and was at Everton's training ground on Tuesday, made only seven league starts last season and was not included in City's recent Club World Cup squad. He was also omitted from England's 2024 European Championship squad and has spoken of his determination to get back in the reckoning under Thomas Tuchel and add to his 39 senior caps. "I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League, and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to," said Moyes. "I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season." Grealish scored 17 goals for City in 157 appearances and was involved in three Premier League title triumphs as well as winning the 2023 Champions League, FA Cup and Club World Cup. He is Everton's sixth and biggest signing of the summer with the Liverpool club ready to start afresh at a new 52,769 seat stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. REUTERS
