I'm an interiors expert and 70s-inspired decor is back, here's 6 ways to style it in your home with a contemporary twist

AN interiors expert has revealed her top tips for incorporating 70s decor into your home as retro style makes a comeback.
From the resurgence of velvet and earth tones in fashion, to the popularity of warm woods and sculptural silhouettes in interiors, there's a continued appetite for homes that feel nostalgic.

Jess Hubner, founder of Collection Seven handcrafted furniture, has revealed her top design cues on how to weave 70s-inspired elements into modern interiors.
And the secret is all about restraint, warmth, and a touch of retro rebellion.
Velvet is shortcut to retro luxe
'Velvet has that unmistakable 70s sensibility - it's rich, tactile and unapologetically glamorous", says Jess.
"It reflects the light beautifully, which gives it a depth and almost colour-changing quality depending on the room and time of day.
"For me, it's the quickest way to bring personality into a space.
"Try a velvet accent chair in burnt orange, olive, or ochre, or even smaller hits like cushions to make a room feel warm and intentional.'
Furniture That Feels Collected
Jess continues: 'Eclectic furniture is key to getting this era right. It's about layering different shapes, styles and textures - without being too matchy-matchy.
"Think asymmetric sofas, vintage accent chairs, and low-slung coffee tables. It's the unexpected mix that brings that retro whimsy, while still feeling elevated.'
From rattan to fringing
According to Jess, 70s interiors are all about embracing natural, handcrafted materials.
This includes rattan, woven, boucle, burlwood and fringe.
Homeowner pulls up 70s carpets hoping to find 'gorgeous parquet or tiles' underneath & instead discovers the 'stuff of nightmares'
Jess says: "These textures add a sense of ease and tactility that makes a home feel relaxed and lived in.
"Shaggy rugs, boucle cushions and rattan armchairs help soften a room and bring in that handcrafted charm without going full boho.'
Let Pattern Play
'Bold prints and patterns are a huge part of the look - whether that's geometric prints, florals, or even leopard print", the interiors pro also revealed.
"I always say, pick your moments. A single statement piece - like a patterned armchair or a bold cushion - goes a long way.
"Offset it with creamy neutrals or earthy tones to keep the room from feeling chaotic. It's the tension between wild and calm that creates modern 70s magic.'
Glow Up
Statement lighting was a huge 70s moment - and those oversized floor lamps and sculptural pendants are just as impactful now.
3
Jess says: "They create visual drama, but also a soft, warm glow that transforms the mood of a room.
"Go for organic shapes and warm bulbs to really lean into that nostalgic, flattering light.'
Soft and smart 70's colours
'The 70s palette is having a huge comeback - think avocado green, mustard, chocolate brown and terracotta", Jess concludes.
"But instead of using them in high-gloss or plastic finishes, keep it matte and grounded.
"Whether it's wall colour, upholstery or even ceramic accessories, these tones bring instant warmth and a nostalgic quality that still feels incredibly current.'

‘The most important thing to me' – Inside Scottie Scheffler's family life with wife Meredith and their son Bennett

SCOTTIE Scheffler is on the verge of claiming The Open, just days after admitting he would give it all up for his beloved family. In the build-up to the 153rd Open, he admitted that if golf interfered with his family life with wife Meredith, 29, and their one-year-old son Bennett, he would simply hang up his putter and walk away. 10 10 10 The devout Texan is golf's most dominant player since Tiger Woods was in his prime. But his life as a father, husband, son and brother is much more important. The world No1 told the media: 'This is not the most important thing in my life. 'I'd much rather be a great father than I would be a great golfer. At the end of the day, that's what's more important to me." Scheffler, 29, and Meredith met at high school in Dallas and they dated long distance throughout college. She once said: 'At the beginning of high school I always thought he had a super humble ambiance about him, that he was just a really down-to-earth guy that doesn't take himself too seriously. 'Even when he had amazing accomplishments, that wasn't the most important thing about him.' After high school she attended Texas A&M University as a communication and business major. They continued dating long-distance during their university years, before Scheffler popped the big question during a hike at the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Texas. Meredith and Scottie tied the knot in a Winter Wonderland-themed wedding in 2020. Before the big day, Meredith wrote on her Instagram: "YES! I can't believe God gave me my best friend to spend the rest of my life with, can't wait to be your wife, Scottie!!!!' The couple officially tied the knot on December 4, 2020, at Arlington Hall in Dallas, after dating for six years. And they welcomed their first child, a son named Bennett, in May 2024. The World No1 posted a heartwarming image of their baby boy Bennett on Instagram. He captioned the picture with this message: "Welcome to the world little one. Your mom and dad love you so much.' 10 10 10 Bennett's birth came just one week before Scheffler competed at the 2024 PGA Championship in Valhalla. Meredith has founded company that supports the lives of those affected by childhood cancer. Scottie has three sisters: Callie, Sara, and Molly. Callie, the eldest, played collegiate golf at Texas A&M University. At the 2016 US Open, she caddied for Scottie when he competed as an amateur. She married and has a son and a daughter. Callie is a commercial real estate agent in Temple, Texas. Molly also attended Texas A&M University and works for the PGA Tour as a communications specialist. This luxurious modular sofa fits in my NYC shoebox apartment - and it actually looks good

It may be July, but when I found this insanely chic modern modular sofa, it felt like Christmas morning! When I first moved into my shoebox studio apartment in Brooklyn, the last thing on my mind was finding the 'perfect' couch. However, over the years, after cycling through several that did not quite fit the bill, I found myself entering my furnishing era. For the past six months, I have been on a journey to find a modern solution that suits my small apartment (500 Sq ft, to be exact) while being comfortable, unlike most of the tiny home living solutions on the market. I found myself struggling to find my sofa soulmate — until I found Homebody. Homebody is an up and coming furniture destination for homeowners and renters alike looking for trendy pieces that feel as luxurious as they look. The brand's popular modular Luxe Sofa was what caught my eye. The beautiful linen furniture piece in shade Coconut is a fan favorite and now officially editor-approved! (And right now with code IDDESIGNSCO it's 30 percent off). What sold me about the unique find is that it is completely customizable to any size space, even my tiny one-room home. I went with a loveseat style (aka two cushions!) and could not be happier because, surprisingly, the seats are MASSIVE. Going modular means more possibilities and that was essential in my search. The design has an insane depth of 39.5 inches and a back height of 37.5 inches, making it by far one of the deepest and tallest sofas I have ever sat on. I specifically wanted a couch that made curling up possible without feeling cramped or unsupported. My partner, who is 6'2 also had reservations on size capacity, but with the Homebody Luxe Sofa, there has been nothing but comfort. Despite the seemingly deep and tall layout of this sofa, it still fits seamlessly into my compact New York City apartment. So much so that I was even able to accommodate my puppy's crate side by side to it, opening up my space even more, which anyone living in a shoebox knows is a BIG deal. Aside from the obvious aesthetic niceties of the Homebody Luxe Sofa, I was most impressed by the bonus amenities of it. Surprisingly, unlike most models that I have seen, it reclines! Powered by a cordless rechargeable remote, each cushion reclines on command and has three position modes, including Seated, Relaxed, and Zero Gravity. In Zero Gravity mode, you feel literally weightless while reclining at a 155-degree angle, which is meant to place your legs slightly above your heart for maximum postural restoration. Ever since purchasing the Luxe Sofa, I have been reading, working, and watching TV on it on the spot. But don't just take my word for it! Many other shoppers are leaving glowing reviews. One said: 'After persuading my husband, we went for the two seater recliner and he absolutely LOVES it. It's such a treat to watch TV at night and be able to recline, we're kinda amazed every time... There were no issues. 10/10 recommend if you're debating whether to buy one. They regularly have great sales too, which helps!' If you have been looking for a way to bring style into your tiny, barely big enough space without compromising comfort, the Homebody modular Luxe Sofa is 100 percent for you. Make sure you use code IDDESIGNSCO while it's still live to snag 30 percent off!
