Two other people have been hospitalized, including one person who is in critical condition. Several firefighters have been injured as well, according to the reports. All residents in the village of Jonquières have been evacuated, Mayor Jacques Piraux said, per The Guardian. Campgrounds in surrounding areas have been evacuated as well. In a post on X, President Emmanuel Macron urged residents to follow evacuation orders and exercise 'the utmost caution' near the blaze. At least 25 homes have been damaged by the fire, according to the BBC and Reuters. France's Prime Minister Francois Bayrou described the fire as 'a catastrophe of unprecedented scale.' He is expected to visit the area on Wednesday, Aug. 6. Meanwhile, Lucie Roesch, secretary general of the Aude area, said the fire 'is advancing in an area where all the conditions are ripe for it to progress,' according to the BBC. She also said the blaze "will keep us busy for several days,' describing it as 'a long-term operation.' This new wildfire comes about a month after a separate wildfire in southern France left more than 100 people injured after burning near Pennes-Mirabeau, north of Marseille. Nigeria issues flood alert for over half of its 36 states
Nigerian weather forecasters on Wednesday warned that parts of 21 of the country's 36 states are likely to experience flooding in the coming days due to heavy rains, as Lagos officials warned residents in some areas to evacuate. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) said 'conditions are highly conducive for intense and prolonged rainfall, which, when combined with already saturated soil profiles and elevated river levels, significantly increases the risk of flooding'. The weather agency flagged several 'high risk' states, including Niger State, where floods flattened a neighbourhood and killed at least 200 in May. Although not on the warning list, more than 10 hours of heavy rainfall on Monday flooded several areas in the commercial hub Lagos of around 20 million people, where officials warned residents in 'lowland' areas to evacuate. 'Based on the predictions from NiMet, we are going to have much more rain this year than we had last year,' Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos state commissioner for the environment, told local broadcaster Channels Television. 'For those who stay in the lowland of Lagos, they may have to move to the upland pending when rain recedes,' he said, listing some popular neighbourhoods such as Lekki and Ikorodu. Heavy rains sweep Nigeria between June and November, often triggering dangerous floods, where poor infrastructure and inadequate drainage often worsen the impact across Africa's most populous country. In 2022, more than 500 people died and 1.4 million were displaced in the country's worst floods in a decade, while last year, more than 300 people were killed and over a million displaced in at least 34 out of Nigeria's 36 states.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis expands emergency declaration to include Lee Fire after merging with Grease Fire
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Wednesday expanded an emergency declaration issued earlier this week for the Elk Fire to include the Lee Fire, which has merged with the nearby Grease Fire near Meeker and grown from 13,000 to almost 23,000 acres overnight. The Lee and Grease fires had been burning on Bureau of Land Management land southwest of Meeker, and, since merging, the combined fire is now being referred to as the Grease Fire. Multiple residents have been displaced as a result of the fires, and more have been placed on pre-evacuation status. "The Lee fire now includes federal, state, and private lands and is growing rapidly," the Governor's Office said in a statement. "Fire conditions in northwest Colorado remain at near record levels, and elevated fire weather and fire risk is forecast for the coming week." The fires straddle and have closed Colorado State Highway 13 -- the Lee Fire to the west at 22,495 acres, and the Elk Fire to the east at 8,305 acres -- and both fires are at 0% containment as of Wednesday morning. Both fires are just south of Meeker, a town of about 2,300 people in Rio Blanco County. The sheriff's office there said the fires have "exceeded local capacity," according to the Governor's Office, and has requested assistance from the state. Over 230 firefighters, seven aircraft, nine engines, seven hand crews, and heavy equipment are involved in the firefighting efforts. "Fire conditions in northwest Colorado remain at near record levels, and elevated fire weather and fire risk is forecast for the coming week," the Governor's Office said. There will be a community meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Meeker High School, 550 School Street, where fire officials will provide updates and answer questions from the community on present and future fire conditions and evacuations.
