Businesses say rebound on Denver's 16th Street Mall tied to new public safety efforts
DENVER (KDVR) — After years of struggling through crime concerns, pandemic aftershocks and prolonged construction, one local business on Denver's 16th Street Mall says the area is finally turning a corner — thanks in part to the city's renewed focus on safety and revitalization.
Brooklyn's Finest Pizza, located along the once-bustling corridor, opened in 2019. But owner Carlo Conti said the past few years haven't been easy.
Denver business advocates take fight against retail crime to nation's Capitol
'There was a lot of homelessness, a lot of drug use on the mall that I had never seen before — out in the open,' Conti said. 'There wasn't a lot of enforcement. It was like a ghost town.'
Conti said his staff endured aggressive incidents inside the store, including theft, physical altercations and vandalism. He said business dropped so sharply, he ended up selling a property just to stay afloat.
'From 2023 to 2024, we took a $250,000 revenue hit from the construction on the mall — and that's just after we got out of COVID,' he said.
Now, he says things are beginning to improve.
The city of Denver has deployed additional officers to the area, along with private security teams and a mounted patrol unit. Officials say the visible presence is helping to deter crime, increase engagement and reassure both residents and tourists.
'If you want a successful city, you have to have a safe city,' said Jon Ewing with the mayor's office. 'Whether it's more officers on foot or the mounted patrol, we want people to know an officer is always just a stone's throw away.'
Denver to increase downtown police presence in effort to invigorate area
The enhanced patrols are part of a broader initiative to bring energy and business back to the 16th Street Mall — a focal point for both tourism and transit downtown.
'This is an amazing time to invest in our city,' Ewing said. 'When people visit Denver, this is where they come.'
Conti said he's already seeing the impact.
'You can feel it coming back,' he said. 'The police presence is heavy, and they're enforcing it. A lot of the nonsense and riff-raff that was going on — it's no longer seen.'
More importantly, he said, it's showing up in his bottom line.
Denver puts $1.5M more into 16th Street Mall for summer events, activities
'I think the city is heading in the right direction. As a business owner, I'm looking forward to a very bright future on the mall.'
City officials say a grand reopening event is planned around Memorial Day, when most of the 16th Street Mall is expected to reopen to pedestrians and buses.

IES Holdings, Inc. (IESC): A Bull Case Theory
We came across a bullish thesis on IES Holdings, Inc. (IESC) on FluentInQuality's Substack. In this article, we will summarize the bulls' thesis on IESC. IES Holdings, Inc. (IESC)'s share was trading at $264.15 as of 2nd June. IESC's trailing P/E was 21.73 according to Yahoo Finance. An executive overlooking a modern technology facility, emphasizing the cutting-edge solutions the company provides. IES Holdings (IESC) is a quietly powerful force behind America's modern infrastructure, delivering essential services that make everything from data centers to solar farms function reliably. Rather than constructing headline-grabbing skyscrapers, IES focuses on building the critical systems that power, connect, and automate them. Operating through four distinct segments—Communications, Residential, Commercial & Industrial, and Infrastructure Solutions—the company maintains a diversified, recession-resilient revenue stream across vital sectors. Each segment targets a different market, yet collectively they form a cohesive, cash-generating engine that benefits from rising demand for connectivity, automation, and resilient infrastructure. IES differentiates itself from typical cyclical contractors by emphasizing recurring, high-margin technical services and decentralized operations. This focus allows each business unit to act with agility while benefiting from shared capital discipline and low corporate overhead. Backed by a significant ownership stake from Chairman Jeff Gendell, IES operates with a founder's mindset—conservative leverage, selective acquisitions, and an unwavering emphasis on cash flow over optics. While its margins may not dazzle, they're steady, and the company has built a track record of disciplined execution and consistent growth. With structural tailwinds from cloud expansion, Sunbelt housing growth, industrial automation, and the energy transition, IES stands to benefit from broad-based, secular demand. It achieves mid-to-high single-digit organic growth, generates healthy free cash flow, and reinvests wisely through tuck-in acquisitions. Largely under the radar, IES is not about hype but about execution and endurance—delivering the kind of durable, compound growth that's rare in today's market. For long-term investors, it represents a resilient and underappreciated opportunity. DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Encore Enterprises, Inc. (Encore) today announced the acquisition of a two-story, Class B medical office building at $114 PSF with 61,356 rentable square feet, located at 16980 N. Dallas Parkway. Situated on 3.144 acres fronting the N. Dallas Tollway north of Westgrove, adjacent to the Quorum/Bent Tree submarket, Encore financed the $7 million property through a bank loan from the Dallas Commercial & Industrial team at Cadence Bank in the inaugural business transaction between the entities. The acquisition grows the Encore Commercial, LLC portfolio to 27 properties under management and marks the sole commercial office asset in the mix. 'Dallas pride runs deep in the heart of Encore Enterprises, where for 26 years we've called this thriving metroplex home,' said Bharat Sangani, M.D., chairman and CEO, Encore Enterprises. 'With the acquisition 16980 N. Dallas Parkway, we cement our future in one of the strongest performing economies in the nation while also helping reinvigorate Dallas' tough office market.' Dallas Parkway is 58.2% occupied by five strong credit tenants, four of which have been in the building over 10 years, with no lease expirations until 2026. Encore Enterprises will self-manage the property and relocate its corporate headquarters there. The building features high-quality construction with a brick and glass façade and 50 below-grade garage spaces alongside 22 covered surface parking spaces. With easy access to the President George Bush Turnpike, 16980 N. Dallas Parkway is 15 miles from downtown Dallas, 13 miles from Love Field Airport and 20 miles from DFW International Airport. Man taken into custody following wrong-way pursuit on I-264 in Virginia Beach
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — An unidentified man has been taken into custody following a pursuit with Virginia State Police Sunday night. According to state police, troopers attempted to stop a dark blue Cadillac at 9 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 264 for reckless driving. The driver refused to stop, causing a traffic pursuit to begin. During the pursuit, the Cadillac exited the interstate at Birdneck Road and entered the city of Virginia Beach, where the driver traveled into the opposite travel lanes against the flow of traffic. The driver continued traveling in the wrong direction until troopers struck the vehicle at the off ramp of I-264 east, disabling the vehicle. Police said the driver barricaded himself in the vehicle and refused to exit. Virginia Beach Police, K-9 and tactical units assisted with the barricade. Shortly after, the unknown male driver was taken into custody without incident. Both east and west lanes were shut down on I-264 while police investigated. Traffic was detoured to Laskin Road. All lanes have since reopened. The driver had no positive identification and refused to identify himself. He has been taken to Virginia Beach city jail to have fingerprints scanned for identification. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
