Is Arteta under pressure to deliver success next season?
Will Mikel Arteta be under pressure at the beginning of next season?Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison believes so after Arsenal came up short in this campaign and their wait goes on for a first domestic title in over 20 years."This was their best opportunity," said Morrison on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "If you look at the points they have got over recent seasons then you can see they have been nowhere near good enough this season. "They have been pushing Manchester City right to the wire, but not this season. I credit Liverpool because they have been consistent but I think this campaign was a great opportunity or Arsenal."I know they have had injuries but every club has. For me, I say it every time I am asked and I just do not see how you can win the Premier League without a number nine."That is what Arsenal need and that is probably what they will strengthen in the summer. But for me, Mikel Arteta is under pressure at the start of next season."The club will back him this summer and allow him to sign players but he needs to start winning trophies and in particular the Premier League."They are the 'nearly club' at the moment, so they need to be better."Listen to the Football Daily podcast on BBC Sounds

Carlos Alcaraz celebrates his historic French Open triumph in Ibiza with forgotten Premier League star as pair pose together on social media
Carlos Alcaraz has been celebrating his historic French Open win in Ibiza with a forgotten Premier League star. The Spanish tennis maverick pulled off one of the greatest comebacks the sport has ever seen when he came from two sets down to beat world No 1 Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros on Sunday. Alcaraz, 22, somehow saved three championship points in the fourth set before going on to stage a stunning fightback to win 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (10-2). The final will go down in history as the longest-ever at the French Open, lasting a total of five gruelling but brilliant hours and 29 minutes. The Spaniard has now flown to Ibiza to celebrate his triumph, despite Wimbledon commencing in less than three weeks, where Alcaraz will aim to win the championships for the third successive year. During his brief spell away from the court, the five-time Grand Slam champion has been pictured with ex-Tottenham and Manchester United star Sergio Reguilon. Reguilon, who was recently released by Spurs after five years at the club, shared a snap of himself posing with Alcaraz on the party island to his Instagram. The story reads 'tradiciones', which means 'traditions' in English. The pair are believed to be very close and celebrated Alacaraz's Wimbledon success together last year. Ibiza has a reputation for its nightlife, regularly packed with party-goers seeking to let loose deep into the night with the background of house music. However, Alcaraz and Reguilon do not appear to be there to club, but rather to enjoy the gorgeous landscape away from the frivolous activities of the old town. When first arriving in Ibiza, Alcaraz may have expected to have an excessive amount of money at his disposal to enjoy the holiday as the Spaniard's fifth grand slam title earned him €2.55million (£2.13m) in prize money. However, he could be set to lose a huge portion of his winnings due to heavy French taxation laws. He could reportedly lose approximately 30 per cent of his earnings, potentially around £639,000. Tennis stars are taxed differently to many sports, with players paying taxes depending on the location where they earn the money regardless of their nationality, according to My Tennis HQ. 'After the players pay taxes to the local government where the prize money was earned, they do not have to pay income tax on it again when they return back home,' the publication explains. French Open stars split a prize pot of £47.3m, with runner-up Sinner receiving €1.27 million (£1.07M). Meanwhile, Alcaraz has already earned over £30m in career earnings, picking up £2.8m this season before his Roland Garros prize. However, in the past Alcaraz has admitted that he doesn't tend to spend big after victories, just opting to buy a 'new pair of sneakers'.

Tijjani Reijnders talks surprising former job and £46.6m 'dream' Man City move
Tijjani Reijnders became Man City's fourth summer signing after his £46.6m switch from AC Milan, but only a few years ago he was working in a supermarket in his native Holland Tijjani Reijnders has gone from stacking supermarket shelves to the Premier League following his £46.6million move to Manchester City. Dutch midfielder Reijnders became City's fourth signing of the summer after joining from AC Milan and will make his debut for Pep Guardiola's side in this month's FIFA Club World Cup. But the 26-year-old has had to work his way to the highest level in world football and worked at Aldi in his native Zwolle for a year before earning his first professional contract. 'I didn't get a professional contract when I was 16 or 17,' said Reijnders. 'At one point in the summer, my mother came to me and said 'you have to get a job'. I was working at a supermarket, I had to sign in and I worked there for one year with my friends. 'But I think, in the end, it was good for me to see how life is without football and now, looking back, it's crazy to see how quick things can go in life. Now, I'm here.' Reijnders left the checkout and supermarket aisles behind when he made the first-team at PEC Zwolle, them moving to AZ Alkmaar for five years, before a two-year spell at AC Milan. He was named Serie A's midfielder of the season for last term, despite a poor campaign for AC Milan, which saw them finish in eighth place and miss out on European football altogether. Those performances caught the eye of City, who moved quickly to sign him and take their summer spending to £110m, following the earlier arrivals of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli. Reflecting on his move to City, Reijnders said: 'I feel really excited. It's a big step. I can't wait to wear the jersey, to play in these colours and to win prizes with the club. 'It's a boy's dream to play in the Premier League. I want to feel the intensity and energy of playing in the Premier League. You have to think even quicker here. The spaces are smaller and these are things I want to be better at. Everybody knows how well City play in general. Being dominant on the pitch and playing attacking football - playing football that I like. 'It's one of the biggest clubs in the world and I shouldn't have to think twice to make this choice to join Manchester City, so I'm very happy to be here. 'I'm a box-to-box midfielder who likes to join the build-up from the back. I like to help the attackers, create chances and try to score myself sometimes. As a midfielder, it's important to score goals as well. 'Two years ago I didn't score that many goals and I worked on it that summer and seeing what I needed to do better in front of the goal. This season, it worked out and I got on the scoresheet more.' MAN CITY SIGNINGS SINCE JANUARY 1st 2025 Omar Marmoush: £60million Nico Gonzalez: £50m Abdukodir Khusanov: £33.5m Vitor Reis: £30m Rayan Ait-Nouri: £31m Rayan Cherki: £31m Tijjani Reijnders: £46.6m Marcus Bettinelli: Nominal fee (undisclosed) Total spend since January 1: £282.1million Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Thomas Partey speaks out on Arsenal future after being put on free transfer list
Thomas Partey sees his Arsenal contract expire this summer and was surprisingly named on the list of players granted a free transfer by the Gunners ahead of the summer window Thomas Partey insists he is not in control of his future after being surprisingly 'released' by Arsenal. The former Atletico Madrid midfielder's contract expires this summer. Arsenal have already announced that he is among the players currently granted a free transfer by the club. But they remain in dialogue over potentially extending his stay on North London. Partey has now spoken and suggested that he is prioritising his own happiness as he attempts to come to a decision over his future, albeit his agent is taking control. Speaking to 3Sports, the Ghanaian said: 'I think the first thing is where are you happy and where do you feel at home. At the end of the day you've been in football, you've been in different teams. 'Then it's about what is your next objective what do you want to achieve next. You still have to look at all this and at the end of the day we all have a family that needs money, this is our mind. 'We are not getting younger. There are a lot of things where you have to look now with a family, where you want them to be happy. When you are young you just play anywhere. 'I'm an Arsenal fan, I can't decide anything and just have to leave it to my agent and the club. Me, I just want to enjoy football.' Mikel Arteta has already shared his thoughts on Partey, and claimed last month that he still had a crucial role to play. He said: "Yeah. In regards to Thomas, consistency-wise, it's been his best season. 'I think the way he's played, performed, his availability has been exceptional, and he's a really important player for us.' Arsenal signed Partey for £45m from Atletico Madrid back in 2020 and the now 31-year-old has gone on to make 167 appearances for the North London club in all competitions and has scored nine goals. Arsenal have already made tweaks to their midfield ahead of next season. Ex-Chelsea star Jorginho has departed the club and sealed a move to Brazilian side Flamengo. The Gunners are expected to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi as a replacement despite late interest from Real Madrid. Arteta's side are anticipated to pay more than the £51m release clause written into his deal in Spain. And once that move is completed, he will be reunited with former teammate Mikel Merino, who also made a switch to the Emirates Stadium last summer.
