‘Don't control me': Jaya Bachchan's fiery remarks during Op Sindoor debate
'It feels strange to say this because what happened looks like fiction to me. You read such things in books, you see them on screen. That people came like this, killed so many... It is really unreal,' she said during a debate on Operation Sindoor.
As members from the treasury bench made remarks, inaudible in the broadcast, Bachchan responded, 'I won't pay attention, but my ears are sharp. What can I do about that? I can't help it.'
Referring again to the treasury bench, she added, 'I will at least congratulate you for having such writers who come up with big names like Sindoor.'
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was seated next to her, was seen smiling.
Bachchan questioned the naming of India's precision strike against Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack, 'Why was this operation named Sindoor? Women's Sindoor has been wiped away.'
When treasury bench members interrupted again, she remarked, 'Either you speak or I will speak.'
BJP MP Surendra Singh Nagar, who was presiding over the House, said, 'Jaya ji, you address the Chair. Whatever you say will go on record.'
To this, Bachchan again looked towards the treasury bench and said, 'When you speak, I don't interrupt. When a woman speaks, I never interrupt. So please mind your tongue.'
She then turned to Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was seen gesturing with her right arm, and said, 'Priyanka, don't control me,' prompting laughter in the House, including from Chaturvedi herself.
Jaya Bachchan continued, 'After the abrogation of Article 370, I saw people proudly saying terrorism will end. 'We promise you.' What happened? These tourists went with that belief. 'We are going to Kashmir, it is paradise.' What did they get? You have destroyed the faith and trust of the people you made promises to.'

5,000 occupancy sanads to be issued under 20-point scheme
Panaji: The state cabinet on Wednesday granted approval to issue occupancy sanads to over 5,000 occupants of the plots allotted under the 20-Point Programme. As for allottees who failed to construct any residential dwelling within the stipulated time, and the plots remain vacant, govt may consider reverting all such plots. It will direct both district collectors to identify these vacant plots, issue reversion orders, and take possession. In the monsoon session of the assembly in 2024, a resolution was moved in the House by MLAs regarding the regularisation of houses constructed without prior permission on the plots allotted under the 20-Point Programme. The chief minister and the revenue minister assured the House that the proposal would be examined on legal parameters and regularisation would be considered in due course. Under govt's 20-Point Programme, plots were provided for settlement to economically weaker sections of society. However, since the status of Occupant Class II does not confer ownership, the allottees remain without the title, and the ownership of the land continues to vest with govt, limiting beneficiaries' legal and developmental rights. State govt has classified the plots into three categories. Category A comprises allottees who have constructed a dwelling according to the grant conditions and are residing there with their families or legal heirs as of the current date. Category B comprises plots that have remained vacant and unutilised, where the allottees have either not taken possession or have not constructed any house. Category C covers plots where the allottees have unauthorisedly transferred possession to third parties, who have constructed a dwelling and are residing in these houses on the plots. No reversion orders have been passed, and the third parties remain in unauthorised occupation. Govt will consider granting them occupancy status upon the payment of a premium of 1/20th of the market value/minimum land rate as notified by govt.

State has used up 60% of its groundwater, Rajya Sabha told
Bhopal: The state has extracted nearly 60% of its groundwater reserves, placing it among the country's most water-stressed states, Rajya Sabha was informed. The state's extraction rate is higher than those of neighbouring Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The state ranks 12th nationally in terms of groundwater extraction as a percentage of total available resources. Punjab recorded the highest stage of groundwater extraction, followed by Rajasthan. The data was shared on Aug 4 by the Union minister of state for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, in response to a written query from MPs Subhash Barala, Mayankkumar Nayak, Kesridevsinh Jhala and Narayana Koragappa. The Rajya Sabha members had sought details on the status of groundwater across states, pollution levels, and measures being taken to address the crisis. Choudhary replied that assessment of dynamic groundwater resources of each state/UT was being carried out on an annual basis jointly by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), and the concerned state nodal/ground water departments. The stage of groundwater extraction (SoE), which is defined as a ratio of annual groundwater extraction over annual extractable groundwater resources for the whole country, has arrived at 60.47%. Water being a state subject, sustainable development and management of groundwater resources are primarily the responsibility of the state govts. The central govt is implementing Atal Bhujal Yojana in 80 water stressed districts of 7 states which has community-led sustainable management of groundwater resources and demand management as its core theme. The CGWA has been constituted under the ministry for the purpose of regulation and control of groundwater development and management in the country. It generates ground water quality data of the entire country on a regional scale as part of its groundwater quality monitoring program and various scientific studies. It may be recalled that 'Dynamic Groundwater Resources of Madhya Pradesh 2024' report had revealed that groundwater extraction in parts of Madhya Pradesh, including its major cities, Bhopal and Indore has reached alarming levels. The industrial capital Indore was rated in "critical", while Bhopal was under "semi-critical" category and had extracted close to 80 per cent of groundwater. The state's Malwa region overall was rated in the critical category. The report stated out of the total 317 assessment units (hydrogeological units), 225 assessment units fall in the safe category, 61 assessment units fall under semi-critical, 5 in critical and 26 fall in the over exploited category.
