Man Utd chief Omar Berrada gets transfer reality check after agreeing latest deal

Daily Mirror8 hours ago
Omar Berra left Manchester City to lead the rebuild of Manchester United but he and his colleagues are not having things all their own way in the transfer market
Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada was hailed as the man who would bring back the glory years to Old Trafford when Sir Jim Ratcliffe lured him away from Manchester City last year.

But the 47-year-old has discovered that if you don't enter the transfer market in a position of strength then football becomes a cruel business.

Berrada has been working closely with director of football Jason Wilcox to recruit the kind of talent that manager Ruben Amorim is demanding after a nightmare first six months at the club ended with United finishing in their lowest league position for 50 years.

Amorim will be delighted that by the time he touches down in Chicago at the start of United's pre-season tour of the United States, he will have Bryan Mbeumo to strengthen an attack that will also include the hugely talented Matheus Cunha.
But Berrada has had to sanction a £70million outlay to secure Mbeumo - the price he was quoted two months ago when United had a £55million opening bid rejected immediately by Brentford for the Cameroon star.
Cunha was secured for the £62.5million buy-out clause stipulated in his contract at Wolves. And United must pay the fee in three instalments over the next two years after the Molineux club dismissed a notion that the deal could be settled over an extended five-year period.

This isn't the way that Berrada did business at the Etihad.
When he worked alongside City sporting director Txiki Begiristain, the pair would often walk away from deals if the figures didn't add up. City refused to break their budget when Southampton were asking for a world-record £75million for Virgil van Dijk.

While their stance backfired on that occasion, they did the same when it came to negotiations over players like Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Fred and Jorginho. The first three of those names ended up at Old Trafford.
United's lack of joined-up thinking continued when Berrada arrived last summer. More than £200million was lavished on Levy Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui - and in November the decision was taken to sack manager Erik ten Hag.

Amorim was recruited from Sporting Lisbon on Berrada's insistence - despite the Portuguese's three-at-the-back philosophy being an awkward fit for the squad he inherited.
With United more than £1billion in debt and facing issues complying with Profit and Sustainability Regulations, the club are unable to spend their way out of the mess that has been created by more than a decade of gross mismanagement.
When Amorim's team lost to Spurs in the Europa League Final in May and missed out on Champions League qualification, the need to sell unwanted players to raise money became even more acute.

Cashing in on Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia would have potentially raised hundreds of millions of pounds in normal circumstances.
But Amorim's decision to group them in a so called bomb-squad, refusing to allow them to train with the players he wants to take into the new season and instructing them to report for fitness sessions late in the afternoon when the chosen ones have left the building at Carrington means interested clubs are playing a waiting game in the knowledge that United are being held to ransom by the policy.
Berrada must find a way of breaking the deadlock - and quickly.

Viktor Gyokeres responds to new Man Utd offer with deal close for Arsenal target

Manchester United are on the brink of agreeing a deal with Sporting CP for Viktor Gyokeres, desperate to bring him to Old Trafford if his proposed move to Arsenal falls through. The Gunners have identified the Sweden international as their leading transfer target up front and have made huge progress in getting a deal over the line in recent weeks. Agreeing personal terms has not been a problem with Gyokeres eager to join Mikel Arteta's side and play in the Champions League next season. But Arsenal are still to agree a fee with Sporting who are standing firm on add-on payments, refusing to be bullied into any deal. Reports in Portugal this weekend have claimed the proposed move is now in real jeopardy with Gyokeres' father convinced it is going to fall through. That uncertainty has invited United forward to make one last play to sign the striker who previously starred under Amorim in the Portuguese capital during their time together at Sporting. News agency SIC Noticias report United are negotiating an offer with a higher value than the one currently being proposed by Arsenal – €63.5 million (£54.9m) up front, plus a further €10m (£8.6m) in bonuses. United have promised a deal worth €80million with Record reporting an agreement between the Premier League side and Sporting is very close to being agreed. However, Gyokeres has his heart set on a move to Arsenal and only wants to play for the Gunners next season. United, who have no European football on offer nest season, have already seen three approaches turned away for Gyokeres with a fourth attempt likely to be unsuccessful again. More Trending United have signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves this summer and are on the brink of bringing in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford after a third offer was accepted this week. Signing another centre forward is United's next priority. The club have already missed out on two targets this summer with Liam Delap rejecting them for Chelsea. Hugo Ekitike is also understood to have turned down a move to Old Trafford having agreed personal terms with Liverpool. Ollie Watkins and Randal Kolo Muani are two other options under consideration. Man City want £35m for James McAtee as Nottingham Forest and West Ham weigh up moves

Manchester City's valuation of James McAtee is proving a stumbling block for the England Under-21 captain's legion of suitors. Nottingham Forest and West Ham United as well as Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany are all competing for McAtee's signature. Most of McAtee's suitors had been hoping to strike a deal around the £20 million to £25 million mark for the player, who has entered the final year of his contract at City. But City are thought to be holding out for around £35m, meaning there is a significant gap in valuations. McAtee's admirers have not been deterred and Forest are thought to be among the clubs who could advance their interest in the City attacking midfielder in the days ahead. But there will be some significant negotiating to be done to strike a deal. City sold Cole Palmer to Chelsea for £42.5m in 2023 and have been using that as something of a benchmark on their pricing for McAtee. McAtee spent some time in Germany recently to meet Frankfurt and Dortmund and is believed to have been impressed by what he saw. Forest and West Ham are also pushing for the player as they bid to strengthen their attacks. Forest have sold Anthony Elanga to Newcastle for £55m while Morgan Gibbs-White faces an uncertain future amid Tottenham Hotspurs' efforts to sign the England midfielder. West Ham manager Graham Potter wants attacking reinforcements having sold Mohammed Kudus to Spurs for £55m. City are interested in re-signing James Trafford should Ederson or Stefan Ortega leave the club this summer. Newcastle had identified Trafford as a leading target but the England Under-21 goalkeeper is believed to have had his head turned by City's interest. Burnley have been holding out for up to £40m for Trafford after rejecting a bid from Newcastle worth around £25m. City sold Trafford to Burnley for a projected £19m in 2023 and have a buy-back option on the goalkeeper but, like Newcastle, they are not thought to be willing to pay as much as £40m. Ederson has been linked with a move to Galatasaray but senior sources at City have played down the talk of a switch to the Turkish club. The Brazil goalkeeper said late last month that rumours of him leaving were 'fake news' and that he expected to stay at City. Ortega's future remains the source of some uncertainty and if he was to leave City would need a replacement. City signed goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea last month following the departure of long-standing No 3 Scott Carson. Meanwhile, City are still planning on midfielder Nico González and academy graduate Nico O'Reilly, who has been linked with a number of loan moves, remaining at the club this summer. González, who joined City from Porto for £50m in January, has been attracting interest on the continent.

Adam Wharton makes transfer decision amid Man Utd and Liverpool interest

Adam Wharton's stance on leaving Crystal Palace has reportedly been revealed amid transfer interest from Manchester United and Liverpool. The defensive midfielder is one of the most highly-rated young players in the Premier League following a stellar 17 months at Selhurst Park. A key cog in Oliver Glasner's side who excels both offensively and defensively, Wharton helped Palace win the FA Cup last season – the first major trophy in the club's history. Gareth Southgate called him up for Euro 2024 but untimely fitness issues have prevented him from adding to his solitary England cap. Injuries also limited the 21-year-old to just 20 league appearances last season but his talent is clear for all to see, with several big clubs around Europe interested in his services. United, Liverpool and Tottenham are all keen, as were Arsenal but their interest has likely cooled following the arrival of Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard. Ruben Amorim called on the Red Devils to sign a new central midfielder after complaining about a 'lack of pace in the middle of the park' following the goalless pre-season friendly with Leeds on Saturday. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on Wharton but will not make a move this summer due to his lack of game time last season. More Trending But Palace are under no pressure to sell their star player, who has four years left on his contract and, according to The Sun, is more than happy to stay in south London for the upcoming season. If Wharton does move on, the Eagles would demand upwards of £70million, with Blackburn Rovers due 15 per cent of the profit after selling him for an initial £18m. Glasner is desperate to hold onto his best players as Palace prepare for their first-ever European campaign, with captain Marc Guehi and talisman Eberechi Eze tipped to leave this summer. Guehi is in the last year of his contract and heavily-linked with Liverpool while Arsenal really want Eze but are reluctant to meet his £68m release clause. Back in April, Rio Ferdinand urged Manchester United to make a move for Wharton this summer, likening the youngster to former teammate and club legend Michael Carrick. 'I would sign another central midfielder this summer to play alongside Manuel Ugarte,' Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. 'That player needs to be able to take the ball and transfer it up the pitch. You know who I would do for? Adam Wharton. 'I would go and get him. The reason I would take him is he can get on the ball and transfer it up the pitch, he's got a great range of passing. 'I think he would be a great addition to the United squad. He reminds me of Michael Carrick a bit.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
