A mum has shared her 'game-changer' method for cooking a jacket potato in the microwave in just 10 minutes and it tastes just as good as if it had been baked in the oven
Jacket potatoes make a brilliant filling meal as they're incredibly simple to prepare, but the major drawback is the lengthy oven cooking time required. Typically, it takes more than an hour to properly cook a potato, which can be frustrating when you're peckish and want your meal prepared swiftly.

Nevertheless, Karli Bitner, a chef and creator of Cooking with Karli, uncovered a "game-changer" technique to prepare a baked potato in just 10 minutes.

She explained: "A baked potato is the perfect side for so many dinners - but I never think about making them until it's too late to pop them into the oven. That's why knowing how to make baked potatoes in the microwave in minutes is one of my favourite dinner time hacks!" Whilst it might sound peculiar, this approach will significantly cut down the preparation time and will actually help create a fluffier interior as the microwave preserves moisture in food during cooking, reports the Express.

Karli explained: "Using a microwave to bake your potatoes is a super quick way to get a hearty side on the table. Done in minutes, these are soft and tender with the absolute minimum effort possible."
How to prepare a jacket potato in the microwave
Simply begin by washing the potatoes completely, then pierce each potato several times with a fork to let steam release whilst it cooks. Next, position the potatoes on a microwave-safe dish and heat for five minutes. Once the timer rings, flip the potatoes and give them another five minutes in the microwave.
To check if they're ready, give the potato a gentle squeeze. It should feel soft, but if it's still hard in the middle, pop it back in the microwave for another two minutes before testing again.
When fully cooked, take them out of the microwave, slice the centre of the potato and press on the sides to open it up. Add your preferred toppings and voila! Your delicious baked potato is ready to be enjoyed.
If you fancy a crispy skin, simply slather the potato with oil, season with salt and pepper, then pop it in the oven at 200C for 10 minutes after microwaving. Your baked potato should take no more than 10 minutes to whip up from scratch, or 20 minutes if you're using both the microwave and the oven.

According to new research from OpenTable, 6pm is an increasingly in-demand time to eat out – with reservations for this time increasing by 11% in London and 6% UK-wide. Another 2024 study found that Gen Z were the most likely to make an earlier dinner booking. It's behaviour that saw one Gen Z TikToker dubbed a 'senior citizen' by her parents, and has even been branded 'loser' behaviour. So why the need to eat so early? The younger generation is famously fond of 'boundaries', and an earlier dinner dates represent a fundamental shift in this boundary-setting. 'Dining at 6pm may reflect a broader change in how people are structuring and managing their time,' Irene Scopelliti, professor of marketing and behavioural science at Bayes Business School, tells Metro. 'One key concept here is time affluence – the feeling of having more time. An early dinner extends the perceived length of the evening and creates a sense of control.' According to another 2024 OpenTable study, 39% said early booking allowed more free time afterwards to enjoy their evening solo. Irene adds that being exposed to uncertainty for a prolonged period of time can sometimes lead people to 'seek greater control and predictability in their personal environments.' And this might extend to Gen Z. Irene adds: 'This stronger preference for structures and routine among a demographic whose formative years have seen economic disruption, climate anxiety and geopolitical conflict.' The pandemic having a long-lasting affect on how we work may also have had an impact. As hybrid working patterns blur lines between work and home, Irene says people have 'new markers that signal this transition.' The 6pm dinner marks a clear break between the structured environment of work and the freedom of personal time. 'A 6pm dinner may serve as a behavioural cue to end the workday,' she says. 'It also sets a socially binding deadline to stop working, as once a plan is set, research shows that individuals are more likely to follow through.' There's also the financial aspect to consider. Gen Z come of age during a cost-of-living crisis, and can be more money-conscious than their elder counterparts. One 2024 study from Barclays revealing that they're more likely to take a considered approach to spending, both in terms of how much they spend and what they consume. For example, the First Table initiative offers diners in London the chance to book the first available table (often as early as 5pm on weekdays) for a 50% discount – a no-brainer amid a cost-of-living crisis that's squeezing British diners out of a meal out. For many, it's a treat – and a rare one at that. And, health-conscious Gen Z may be weighing up the health benefits too. A 2019 study found that those who eat late at night (within two hours of sleep) are 50% more likely to be impacted by obesity. They add that "Fruit, especially bruised apples and pears, will be popular with thrushes and blackbirds." Birds have different feeding preferences - some favour ground feeding over visiting a bird table. ‌ The RSPB explains: "Blackbirds are too large to access most hanging bird feeders. To attract them to your garden, it's best to put out food on a bird table or scatter it on the ground." This is also true for sparrows, dunnocks and doves, which typically prefer ground feeding, although they usually consume seeds. However, when leaving food on the ground, ensure it's in an open location, away from hedges or potential hiding spots for cats. Birds won't feed where they feel threatened by predators like cats, or could be exposed to danger if forced to feed near cat hiding places. For those utilising a bird table, it's crucial to maintain cleanliness by washing it regularly with hot, soapy water, especially if it's flat. This advice comes as the RSPB has temporarily halted sales of flat, open bird tables while they explore the possibility that such feeders might be aiding in the transmission of diseases. The RSPB emphasised the significance of keeping bird feeders clean, stating: "Bird feeder hygiene is very important. Brush off debris every time you put out fresh food and scrub feeders with mild disinfectant solution weekly."

However, if your Acer begins to deteriorate or perish, it may lose its characteristic colouring as it begins to fade. "Optimal conditions to promote vivid colours are early morning sun and late day shade. Cultivar selection is also key if you're looking for a certain colour. Red Dragon and Emperor 1 are known to hold their red colour much better than other cultivars."
