Rose of Tralee once barred moms – 2025 entrant opens up about being a mother

Mayo Rose Clara Gardiner talks about being a mother in a competition that once barred single moms
Clara Gardiner might think this writer is a dinosaur, a relic of the past for asking what it feels like being a mother taking part in a diverse festival such as The Rose of Tralee.
The 24-year-old Mayo Rose is mother to Noah who turns three on August 7 – just days before his mom heads off on her epic Rose of Tralee tour around Ireland enroute to Tralee. The plan is to have Noah in Tralee waving at his mother during the famous parades on the Saturday and Sunday of the festival.

Kerry Rose of Tralee opens up about strict rules to ‘safeguard' young women

The Kerry Rose of Tralee has opened up about the festival's strict rules to 'safeguard' young women. Laura Daly, from Ballymacelligott, is hoping to take the crown back to the Kingdom. But the 23-year-old has revealed what goes on behind the scenes to keep all 32 Roses looking so fresh for the Rose of Tralee, which will be hosted by Kathryn Thomas and Dáithí Ó Sé. She told the Irish Mirror: 'There's a mixture of things. But you know what, they're put in place in a sense that keeps us safe, keeps us well, keeps us going, because it is a very long process. 'People are tired. You're being pulled for pictures, you're being pulled for interviews. You're with the girls. You're trying to get to know 32 new people, not to mind your chaperone team, not to mind everybody who awaits you when you come down to Tralee as well. 'But when it comes to curfews, even last night, we had a gala up in Co Meath in the Knightsbrook Hotel and there was a few of us looking at our chaperone saying, 'When is it bedtime?' We want to shower. We need to pack suitcases. It's just to have our best interests at heart. Like, the biggest thing is we have a briefing every night, which basically is time keeping is the biggest one, really, if you're not on time, because it's all different wheels that are put in motion if one thing comes out, but to see the inner workings of this festival from this side of things. 'I would always say that from being involved, you think you know what the festival is, but I've just seen it in a brand new light this year. And you, you really get to see the inner workings of how the Roses, who are, I guess, who are at the centre of this festival, they need to be kept going. 'They need to make sure that they all have a voice come Monday and Tuesday night, nobody's getting sick, everybody's happy and in a good, safe head space, and everybody's feeling supported. 'So these rules, I guess people see them as rules, but when you're in it, you know why you need it. It's the same way as we're told to eat healthy, the same way as we're told to exercise, like all these things, like, when it comes to the rules, whether it's at bedtime, whether it's, you know, don't drink too much.' This year's festival takes place in Tralee tomorrow and Tuesday from 8pm. Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here. Kind hearted Kathryn rescues tiny kitten

Caring TV Presenter and Rose of Tralee co-host Kathryn Thomas came to the aid of a tiny, terrified kitten on a roundabout in County Kerry yesterday. (Friday) The tiny cat was stranded on the road into Tralee, as Kathryn described with 'cars literally driving over her'. The kitten couldn't move, and it's believed her back legs were broken. On a post on the Facebook page, and writing on her social media pages Kathryn detailed what happened and said, she stopped the car and picked up the injured kitten and took her to the Abbey Veterinary Centre on Church Street in Tralee where vet Deirdre Cremins is now looking after the lucky puss. PIC – Facebook page Before leaving the veterinary surgery, Kathryn and Deirdre decided the most appropriate name for the injured kitten was, what else, but Rose. Kathryn, who will co-host the Rose of Tralee with Daithí O'Shea on Monday and Tuesday nights, revealed that the terrrified little cat piddled all over her festival notes while travelling to the vets on the back seat of Kathryns car, but I'm sure saving the poor little mite was to the forefront of Kathryns mind. Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas. Pic: Domnick Walsh We hope she goes full circle now and adopts the little kitten as a pet for her little girls Grace and Ellie, who would probably be thrilled if mammy came home from Tralee with a fluffy little kitten called Rose.

'We all called her Rose. I'm not able... pray for Rose' KIND STAR 'I'm not able', cries RTE star Kathryn Thomas as she shares heartwarming gesture amid hectic Rose of Tralee prep RTE star Kathryn Thomas has shared the heartfelt gesture she made to a rescue kitten ahead of the Rose of Tralee. The TV star has had a hectic few days, after her holiday in Greece ended in disaster as she prepared to come home to co-host the Rose of Tralee festival. 3 Kathryn made an unexpected stop en route to Kerry Credit: Instagram 3 Kathryn was heading to Tralee to host the annual Rose of Tralee festival Credit: Instagram Advertisement While on the road, Kathryn came across a tiny white and grey kitten that had been injured and desperately needed help. Kathryn shared a photo of the kitten lying across the backseat of her car and on top of her notes for the festival. She wrote: "Picked up this poor little angel on the motorway roundabout with cars literally driving over her. "She couldn't move and it looked like her back legs were broken." Advertisement She explained how she couldn't bear to leave the little one alone and desperately attempted to find it some help. Kathryn continued: "Googled Tralee vets, rang one who refused to take her and then rang Abbey Veterinary Centre on Church St, who told me to bring her in. "She peed and what all over my Rose of Tralee briefs on the way there, but vet Deirdre Cremins, the angel that she is, thinks she has a chance. "All the staff were so lovely as I had to run but said they'd keep me updated. We all called her Rose. I'm not able... pray for Rose." Kathryn Thomas opens up getting 'jitter' ahead of live Rose of Tralee shows When she checked in after her cat rescue, Kathryn shared a clip of her stunning hotel room, where the staff had thoughtfully prepared everything she'd need for her hosting duties. The Meadowlands team placed a rail for Kathryn's outfits in the room and also left a packet of Blu Tack so she could stick all her notes about the Roses on the wardrobe. Hours after dropping off the ailing kitten, Kathryn shared a heartwarming update on the feline's condition. Sharing a gorgeous photo of the kitten, she wrote: "A little pic of Rose from Deirdre at Abbey Veterinary centre this morning. Advertisement 3 Kathryn issued an update hours later to fans "Cannot thank Bryan and the whole team enough. Look at her, she's so alert." Earlier last week, ahead of her stint on the national broadcaster hosting the Rose of Tralee, Kathryn shared a terrifying update with her fans. The former Operation Transformation host had been enjoying a sun-soaked family trip in Greece over the past week - but disaster struck when it was time to pack up and go home. Kathryn and her husband Padraig McLaughlin had been staying on Andros island with their two daughters, Grace and Ellie. Advertisement TRAVEL TROUBLE Andros can only be reached by boat transport, and the closest airport is Athens, which is a 2-hour ferry. As the TV star and her family set off to get home to Ireland, they quickly realised the boat could not sail as winds on the sea were dangerous. The 45-year-old told fans on Instagram: "All ferries to Athens are cancelled due to unprecedented high winds and we've now missed our flight." The Carlow native expressed her panic as she added: "Nobody could tell us for certain when the ferries would run again... an absolute nightmare."
