Giants great, Super Bowl winner Phil Simms lands new broadcasting gig after CBS exit

Giants legend Phil Simms is returning to the broadcast booth after his exit from CBS. The star quarterback, who called games for NBC and CBS from 1995 to 2016, will work three Big Ten college football games on Peacock this season, NBC Sports announced Tuesday. Simms was tabbed to serve as an analyst for the Illinois-Western Illinois game on Aug. 29, the Rutgers-Miami (OH) game on Sept. 6 and a third game to be determined alongside play-by-play announcer Paul Burmeister. I have had a great relationship with Paul Burmeister over many years so I know it going to be fun and exciting to work with him,' Simms said. 'I appreciate NBC for giving me this opportunity and I can't wait for the college football season to start.' The Super Bowl XXI MVP last played for the Giants in 1993 before joining ESPN as a studio analyst for the 1994 NFL season. Simms also announced weightlifting events during the 1996 Olympics and was a sideline reporter during NBA games. When CBS acquired the AFC package from NBC in 1998, CBS hired Simms and paired him with Greg Gumbel and later Jim Nantz. 3 Phil Simms on NFL Today's coverage at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada for Super Bowl LVIII. Simms, who worked at the network for 26 years, exited the show alongside former Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason while Matt Ryan and JJ Watt succeeded the pair in 2024. 'Nobody asked me, talked to me or anything like that,' Simms told the 'Front Office Sports Today' podcast in May 2024. 'I waited for I guess over a couple months to see what CBS was doing, and I think the longer you wait, the more you know it's not gonna work out in your favor.' Why Jon Rahm's $18 million LIV Golf payday was ‘bittersweet'

Jon Rahm wasn't exactly in the mood for a victory lap Sunday when he claimed his second straight LIV Golf Individual Championship title and an $18 million bonus. When reflecting on his performance in Indianapolis this past weekend, the two-time major winner called the moment 'bittersweet' after falling short in a playoff for the second consecutive week and missing out on an individual tournament victory for the 2025 season. 'I know I'm supposed to be happy, it's a great moment, it doesn't feel great to finish the year losing two playoffs,' Rahm, 30, began. '… I'm sure over time I'll get over that, and I'll really appreciate what I've done this year. To be able to win the season without actually winning a tournament, I know I'll be proud of that.' Rahm, in his second season on the Saudi-backed circuit, shot an 11-under 60 Sunday in the final round of the Indianapolis tournament, tying Sebastian Muñoz for the top slot. In a one-hole playoff on the par-4 18th at The Club at Chatham Hills, Muñoz sank a birdie while the Legion XIII captain carded a par. A similar scene unfolded the week before in Chicago, where Rahm was edged out in a one-hole playoff by Dean Burmester, who birdied the par-4 18th at Bolingbrook Golf Club. Despite those crushing finishes, the Spaniard managed to eclipse points leader Joaquin Niemann (223.68) — the individual victor of five tournaments this season — to claim back-to-back Individual Championship titles with 226.16 points. 'He's played incredible golf, and one could argue he was probably the more deserving guy to win this, but we have the point system that we have, and somehow, I don't know how I managed to pull through and get it done, so extremely proud of that,' Rahm said. Niemann, who competes on Muñoz's Torque GC club, said the result was 'kind of hard to swallow.' 'But at the end of the day, I think it is what it is,' he said. 'I feel like it's going to put something inside me to kind of work harder and try to be in this situation again next year and make it different.' Rahm pocketed $20.25 million from Sunday's finale at Indianapolis, $2.25 million for his second-place finish and $18 million for the season championship, according to Golf Week. The former world No. 1 joined the PGA Tour's rival in December 2023 for a multiyear deal worth a reported $500 million.

Chargers predicted to get off to rough regular season start within the division

Chargers predicted to get off to rough regular season start within the division originally appeared on The Sporting News The Los Angeles Chargers open the 2025 season with three straight divisional opponents. At least one analyst feels that the team will get off to a bumpy start. The Chargers open the season in Brazil against the Chiefs before playing the Raiders in Las Vegas and then hosting the Broncos in Week 3. John Breech of CBS Sports made his predictions for when each NFL team will lose its first game this coming season, and he has the Chargers stumbling out of the gate. "The Chiefs have won seven straight games against the Chargers, but they've never beaten them in Brazil. However, there's a first time for everything. The Chargers have had a run of bad injury luck with Rashawn Slater out for the season and the Chiefs are the Chiefs", wrote Breech. Jim Harbaugh fought Andy Reid hard twice last season, but came up short. He goes to 0-3 against him as the coach of the Chargers with this prediction. But it doesn't stop there. While we don't know how Breech sees the Week 2 game vs. the Raiders (because he has the Raiders losing in Week 1 as well), we can see that he predicts the Broncos to beat them in Week 3 as he doesn't have the Broncos losing their first game until Week 4. That means that the Chargers, according to Breech, will start the season 1-2, at best. As far as predictions go, it gets a little worse. Over at Ali Bhanpuri and Adam Rank predicted each game of the upcoming season and locked in their playoff teams as a result. Bhanpuri has the Chargers finishing the season 10-7 and fitting into the No. 6 slot in the AFC. Rank also has them going 10-7, but they miss the playoffs entirely in his prediction. READ:4 Chargers on chopping block ahead of game vs. Rams It seems that the Chargers have failed to create any new believers this offseason, as many analysts see them being about as good as they were last year, if not a little bit worse. Harbaugh could use that as fuel to rally his troops.
