Niger attack: More than 200 gunmen on motorbikes storm army base in Banibangou

The three countries have formed an alliance to fight the jihadists and scaled back ties with the West, turning to Russia and Turkey instead for their security needs.But the violence has continued.

Three people killed and eight wounded in Brooklyn lounge shooting, police say
Three people were killed and eight others wounded when multiple gunmen opened fire inside a crowded Brooklyn hookah lounge and restaurant early Sunday morning, according to authorities. Police officers responded to reports of a shooting inside the Taste of the City lounge in Crown Heights just before 3.30am, New York police department (NYPD) commissioner, Jessica Tisch, said at a press briefing later Sunday. The three people who were killed were all men and were all pronounced dead at the scene. Two were ages 27 and 35, and it wasn't immediately known how old the third slain victim was, police said. Of 11 victims, Tisch added, eight were men and three were women. Their known ages ranged from 27 to 61. The eight wounded victims – five men and three women – were taken to local hospitals with what police said were non-life threatening injuries. 'We have multiple shooters involved in this shooting,' Tisch said Sunday. 'We have recovered at least 36 shell casings.' Officers had recovered one weapon near the scene of the shooting. But investigators had not immediately identified or detained any suspects. Tisch made it a point to say New York City had registered 'the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims seven months in the year … on record'. Nonetheless, 'it's a terrible thing that's happened', she said. 'It's a terrible shooting,' Tisch added. 'There's no other way to describe it'. Taste of the City Lounge, located less than a half mile from the historic Brooklyn Museum serves American and Caribbean plates with a full bar, hookah and DJs. The business opened three years earlier and was the scene of another shooting in November 2024. That earlier case was non-fatal. The typically Jewish and West Indian area where the shooting occurred has been undergoing rapid gentrification in recent years. In 2017, a bar advertising its 'bullet-ridden' wall caused outrage, with residents accusing the owner of insensitive stereotyping that overlooked the realities of gang violence and its cost. As of Sunday, there had been more than 270 mass shootings in the US this year – or 1.18 a day, according to the nonpartisan Gun Violence Archive. The online resource defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more victims are wounded or killed. The US's perennially high rates of such shootings have prompted calls from some in the country for more substantial gun control. But Congress has largely been unable or unwilling to heed those calls.

Failed Republican candidate jailed for 80 years over gun attacks on Democrats' homes
Aug 13 (Reuters) - A failed Republican candidate in New Mexico was jailed for 80 years on Wednesday for contracting gunmen to carry out drive-by shootings on the homes of Democratic officials after his 2022 election defeat. Solomon Pena orchestrated the attacks in Albuquerque, New Mexico's largest city, weeks after losing his bid for a state house seat. He was driven by conspiracy theories he had been a victim of election fraud, federal prosecutors said. Pena was convicted of 13 felony charges earlier this year for attacks on four officials in December 2022 and January 2023, including the current state house speaker. No one was hurt in the shootings, which followed other politically motivated violence such as the hammer attack on the husband of U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi. "Violence and intimidation have no place in our elections," U.S. Attorney for New Mexico Ryan Ellison said in a statement following the sentencing. Pena's lawyer Nicholas Hart said his client would appeal the conviction. Two men who said they were hired by Pena for the attacks pleaded guilty in 2024. After he failed to be elected, Pena pressured members of the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners not to certify the results. When they refused, Pena recruited Jose Trujillo and Demetrio Trujillo to carry out the shootings, prosecutors said. False and unfounded claims of election fraud exploded after President Donald Trump refused to accept defeat in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Eight people killed in barrage of gunfire on Ecuador nightclub
Eight people have been killed and two others wounded when a group of gunmen unleashed a barrage of gunfire on a crowd outside a nightclub in a town in south-western Ecuador. Law enforcement arrived on the scene following an emergency call alerting them to a shooting, and found 'several people wounded and seven bodies', said Javier Chango, the police colonel, at a press conference on Sunday, adding that an eighth person died in the hospital. The gunmen arrived in two pickup trucks and opened fire on people drinking outside the nightclub at 1.15am local time in Santa Lucía, which has a population of 38,000, in the Guayas province. Among the dead was the nightclub owner, Jorge Urquizo, who was the brother of Santa Lucía's mayor. Police found 800 cartridge cases at the scene. After the attack the gunmen got back in their trucks and fled along an 'unknown route', Chango said. The local police picked up a man driving a truck who was carrying a revolver, but were not able to determine whether he was involved in the attack. The police said they had yet to work out a motive for the shooting. The bodies of the dead were taken to a morgue in the neighboring city of Daule. The office of Santa Lucía's mayor, Ubaldo Urquizo, expressed condolences on Sunday. 'We unite in sorrow and prayer for this violent attack that has struck our community,' the office said on social media. Ecuador, once a peaceful haven between the world's two top cocaine exporters, Colombia and Peru, has seen violence erupt in recent years as gangs with ties to Mexican and Colombian cartels vie for control. More than 70% of all cocaine produced in the world now passes through Ecuador's ports, according to government data. Guayas is one of four provinces where the president, Daniel Noboa, recently declared a two-month state of emergency to combat gang violence. However, despite a stepped-up military presence authorities have not stemmed the bloodshed. More than 4,051 homicides were recorded between January and May, according to official figures. Analysts believe it is the most violent start to a year in the country's recent history.
