‘Final Destination: Bloodlines' eyes record-breaking $50 million opening as the Weeknd and Jenna Ortega fizzle in ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow'
Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the sixth installment of New Line's R-rated horror franchise is poised for a franchise-record $50 million debut. The film raked in an impressive $5 million from Thursday previews, according to Deadline, matching the preview earnings of Ryan Coogler's Sinners last month, which went onto a $48 million opening weekend. Bloodlines marks the first Final Destination film in more than a decade — since 2011's Final Destination 5 opened to $18 million. The franchise, which debuted in 2000, has grossed $665 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, audiences are in no rush to see Hurry Up Tomorrow, the new psychological thriller starring Abel Tesfaye (better known multiplatinum recording artist the Weeknd), Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan. Serving as a companion piece to the Weeknd's sixth studio album of the same name, the film was panned by critics and has struggled to generate hype, despite its star power.
Gold Derby readers predict that Final Destination: Bloodlines will win the May 16-18 weekend with between $25 million and $50 million domestically. Thunderbolts is the runner-up selection of our oddsmakers.

Steelers All-Pro WR Will Star in New Movie
Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro wide receiver DK Metcalf is taking his talents to Hollywood. According to Samuel Long of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Metcalf will star in a new XR thriller film, Asteroid, which will feature actors Hailee Steinfeld, Rhenzy Feliz, Ron Perlma, Leon Mandel and Freida Pinto. Steinfeld is Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen's wife. The plot will follow a group of strangers who travel to a nearby asteroid for the chance to find lifetime wealth, according to Deadline. 'The thriller is among 30 works competing in the Venice Film Festival's Immersive Competition, which is part of the wider Venice Immersive showcase running from August 27 to September 6 in a dedicated space on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio, just a three-minute vaporetto ride from festival's main Lido di Venezia hub,' Deadline wrote. According to Metcalf's IMDB page, he has previously appeared as himself in Peacock original series 'Bel-Air' and Paramount + original movie, 'Secret Headquarters.' The Steelers acquired Metcalf in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks in March. General manager Omar Khan sent a 2025 second-round draft pick to the Seahawks for the All-Pro wideout. The teams also flipped picks in the sixth and seventh rounds. Metcalf's five-year, $150 million deal is the largest contact given out to an incoming player in franchise history. Metcalf revealed during his introductory press conference that he and is girlfriend Normani are now engaged. Normani is a singer. She first became known as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, which became one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. Normani revealed that Russell Wilson and his wife, Ciara, were actually the ones who set her and Metcalf up. Metcalf has been a very productive wide receiver through the first six seasons of his NFL career, recording at least 900 receiving yards and five touchdowns every year. The big-bodied wide receiver out of Mississippi hopes to make an instant impact with his new team. Metcalf's Steelers debut will be on Sunday, Sept. 7 against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. James Gunn Breathes Easy After SUPERMAN's Success: "I Don't Have To Worry About The Life And Death Of The DC Brand Anymore" — GeekTyrant
When Superman hit theaters last month, the DCU finally got a much-needed win. The film has earned strong reviews (it holds an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes) and has already crossed the $600 million mark at the global box office, making it the top-grossing superhero flick of 2025 so far. While it didn't hit the elusive billion-dollar milestone, it's a major victory for DC Studios, especially after the critical and financial failures of The Flash and Joker: Folie à Deux . With that kind of success, Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is finally feeling a sense of relief. In a recent interview, Gunn got candid about the pressure that came with launching the first film in the new DC Universe. "That's all it is, it's just an enormous sense of relief. It's relief, and then followed very quickly by excitement because Superman in some ways was the proof of concept. 'It was so, so hard, in the same way that Guardians [of the Galaxy] was so, so hard. Once you're in the groove, you realise, 'Oh, this is what works, this is what doesn't, this is where we can go with this.'" He went on to say: "It means now we have the freedom to tell these other stories in a way that's really exciting. Now, I can just be creative and I don't have to be as concerned with the life and death of the DC brand as I was a month and a half ago." The positive reception from fans has only reinforced his confidence moving forward. "I feel really embraced by the audience. My feeling is that the movie spoke to people, but it also spoke to people because there was a reason for its existence. There was this message of kindness that spoke to people." But Gunn also made it clear he doesn't intend to repeat the same formula in future DCU stories. "That doesn't mean every story I'm going to tell is a message of kindness; it just means there needs to be a reason for the story to be told. You can't just be piling on stuff because it's the characters people liked." Looking ahead, Supergirl is next in line, continuing the "Super-Family" narrative. With Clayface also in the pipeline, the pressure is on to maintain this new momentum. There are rumblings of a major crossover that might see Supergirl teaming up with the Man of Steel, and long-term fans are still hoping that Brainiac will finally make his big-screen debut. Gunn's ultimate vision remains tightly under wraps, but speculation points toward something big and exciting.

Ocean's 14: Conclave Director Reveals Why He Turned Down Star-Studded Sequel
Nearly a year after it was reported that Conclave director Edward Berger was in talks to helm , Berger has now confirmed that he had already turned down the star-studded project. This comes after it was recently revealed that the acclaimed filmmaker was one of Amazon MGM Studios' frontrunners to direct the next James Bond movie before Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve landed the project. Why Conclave director Edward Berger turned down Ocean's 14? During a recent interview with Deadline, Berger explained the reason why he decided to turn down the opportunity to direct Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Matt Damon in Ocean's 14. The All Quiet on the Western Front director admitted that he was initially tempted to accept the high-profile project due to the perks that come with directing a star-studded movie for a big studio. 'We were talking at that time, Brad and I, and yes, was I seduced by the thought of making something like that. I'm from a small place in Germany. I've never had those opportunities,' Berger shared. 'And suddenly Brad Pitt and George Clooney and Julia Roberts and Matt Damon, I would be able to make a movie with them. Ballad of A Small Player was a hard movie to make, and I felt like, wouldn't it be great to make a studio picture? The studio needs that movie, the stars want the movie, as does the audience. Everyone needs the movie. It's a franchise. I can pay my crew. I can have fun with them. It's a temptation.' However, Berger realized that it would've been difficult to make Ocean's 14 as his own, because he doesn't know if he can add something new to the incredible franchise that Steven Soderbergh had built. He also revealed that he called Pitt to inform the Oscar-winning actor that he wasn't the right guy to helm the movie. 'Deep down inside, I knew it's not my movie, it's Steven Soderbergh's movie. He invented that, beautifully. He made them, and I'm just following in his footsteps. What is new for me?' He continued, 'I love those movies, but in essence, I don't know what to add to what the great Steven Soderbergh did.' He added, 'And so in the end, I had to sleep eight hours. And I think maybe when I met you, I'd slept a week. But during the shooting of Ballad, it was tempting because I was so tired. And then I wrapped, I went to bed, slept eight hours, and realized, it's not me. I called Brad because we had talked a bunch of times. I knew he was open to doing something, and I basically said, I'm sorry, I don't want to do Ocean's and hope I haven't offended you.' In the early 2000s, Steven Soderbergh directed the remake of Ocean's Eleven, which also featured a star-studded ensemble led by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. Due to its box-office success, it was followed by three more installments, including the spin-off Ocean's 8, which featured Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the sister of Clooney's Danny Ocean. The franchise currently has a combined worldwide gross of over $1 billion at the box office.
