Lost hikers were airlifted to safety from a forest
The Placer County Sheriff's Office rescued lost hikers from a forest in Northern California after they ran out of food.
Dramatic footage shows two hikers being rescued from a Northern California forest, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office said in a May 20 Facebook post that they received a GPS distress text from the hikers near the Mumford Bar Trail in the Tahoe National Forest on May 16.
The pair were out of food and had lost the trail, according to the Sheriff's Office. The hikers were advised to shelter in place overnight.
A rescue effort began at first light on May 17.
"Though cold and tired, both were in good condition," the Sheriff's Office said.
Elise Soviar, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, told CBS Sacramento that the rescue was a reminder of the need to be prepared before setting off on the trails.
"There are places all across Placer County and the Sierra where you're not prepared for what you're about to encounter. So educating yourself on that, really reading up on the trails, and knowing what you're getting into before you do something is paramount," Soviar told the station.

The start of tourist and snowbird season is still months away, but July proved to be a busier than usual month as far as passengers coming and going through Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). The Lee County Port Authority reports that during July 720,973 passengers traveled through RSW in Fort Myers. It was the second-best July in the 43-year history of the airport. In July of 2021, a total of 814,471 passengers were counted making that the busiest July in the airport's history. This was an increase of 6.5% compared to July 2024. Year-to-date, passenger traffic is down only 0.8%. What airline carried the most passengers at RSW in July? The traffic leader in July was Delta with 173,395 passengers. Rounding out the top five airlines were: Southwest (127,070) American (118,972) United (102,374) JetBlue (70,046) Did you know? Southwest Florida International Airport served more than 11 million passengers in 2024 and is one of the top 50 U.S. airports for passenger traffic. For more information, visit or Expansion update: Temporary closure of crosswalk As part of the work for the Concourse E Project at RSW, there will be a temporary detour on Crosswalk 5 on the lower level starting the morning of Aug. 20. There will be a closed area near the west-side entrance of the Rental Car facility and Crosswalk 5 and pedestrians will be directed to take the detour for access to the parking garage, ground transportation, shuttles, Rental Car facility, etc. Signage will be in place to help direct passengers. This brief detour may remain in effect through Aug. 29. The upper/second level of Crosswalk 5 will remain open, providing direct access between the parking garage and terminal. The Lee County Port Authority will continue to post updates on the airport's website and Facebook to help travelers and airport users become aware of changes due to construction. Here are 5 places to pick sunflowers in Rhode Island this year
As August continues, it is almost sunflower season, meaning soon, farms, roads and fields all across the Ocean State will be filled with the bright yellow flowers. However, the summer flowers are not only for viewing. For those who want to bring the beautiful golden blooms home, luckily, Rhode Island has plenty of farms that offer pick-your-own services for sunflowers throughout August and September. Here are five places where you can pick your own sunflowers in Rhode Island. Butterfly Farm Each year, Butterfly Farm in Lincoln hosts Sunflower Fest all August long. Along with pick-your-own sunflowers, the event has a "build your own bouquet" station, food trucks, local vendors and a farm stand with fresh meat and produce. Entry to the sunflower field costs $5 for every person over the age of four, payable by cash, check or Venmo. Cards may be accepted by specific vendors. When: Aug. 9-10, 16-17, 23-24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Where: 679 Great Road, Lincoln Manfredi Farms Westerly's Manfredi Farms opens its vibrant display of sunflowers for photo-ops and a pick-your-own experience each August. Personal clippers or shears are required to pick the sunflowers. When: 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily Where: 59 Dunns Corner Road, Westerly More: Henry Homeyer on arranging flowers, visiting a botanic garden, putting up tomatoes Confreda Greenhouses & Farms Want to get lost in a field of sunflowers? Tickets are available at the Garden Center Register, and a portion of every ticket sold goes toward the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Besides pick-your-own, the farm also has a market and bakery, where they offer products like seasonal vegetables, homemade apple cider, natural lemonade, gourmet pies, apple cider donuts and gourmet candy apples. While the sunflower fields are not yet open for picking this season, Jaswell's website says that pick-your-own sunflowers will return for fall 2025. When: Sunflower picking is expected to open in the fall, with updates released on the farm's Instagram and Facebook pages. Jaswell's is currently open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. CBS Sports suggests creative outdoor venue for Iowa vs. Iowa State Cy-Hawk basketball game
College basketball has seen games played on aircraft carriers, in the Bahamas, and even in hotel ballrooms before. Lay down the hardwood, bring in some hoops, and teams can go at it. What if they took things a step further? What if the games were played at venues unique to the teams playing in the game? That is what CBS Sports has suggested take place for the Iowa vs. Iowa State Cy-Hawk basketball game. Normally taking place indoors in a traditional setting is fun and brings the fans in, but could taking this game outdoors to a historic place in the state of Iowa take it to the next level? CBS explains why the Hawkeyes and Cyclones should follow the MLB's suit and put some hardwood down at the Field of Dreams in Iowa. Iowa vs. Iowa State (Field of Dreams) The NBA has reportedly looked into hosting a game at what is commonly known as "Field of Dreams," the baseball field built in Dyersville, Iowa that was made famous by the Kevin Costner film of the same name. Logistically, the NBA concluded, it would be tough. But it's not impossible! So let's figure it out! The University of Iowa is 80 miles away. Iowa State University is a further but still less than a three-hour drive. Keeping the court free of condensation might be a challenge. And kinda-cold temperatures could be a concern. The winds whipping may plummet the shooting percentages, but teams can adjust. The Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team played an outdoor exhibition game inside Kinnick Stadium, which was a smashing success.
