PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie's run in the Japan Open came to an end after they went down to China's Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin in the mixed doubles quarter-finals.
Soon Huat-Shevon had an opportunity to take the match to a third and deciding game when they led 20-19 in the second game but could not clinch the deal and lost 13-21, 21-23 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Friday (July 18).
The defeat meant that the independent pair's hopes of setting up an all-Malaysian last-four clash against Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei went up in smoke.
World No. 4 Tang Jie-Ee Wei will instead take on world No. 2 Zhenbang-Yaxin on Saturday (July 19) for a place in the final.

Malaysia badminton team advances to WUG 2025 quarterfinals

MULHEIM AN DER RUHR: Malaysia's badminton team has stormed into the quarterfinals of the 2025 World University Games after a hard-fought 3-0 win against France in the round-of-16 at Westenergie Sporthalle. The French side pushed the Malaysian players to their limits, with all three matches going to three sets. Mixed doubles pair Wee Yee Hern and Clarissa San set the tone with a 15-13, 14-16, 15-12 victory over Lucas Renoir and Flavie Vallet. Men's singles player Jacky Kok Jing Hong followed with a 17-15, 13-15, 15-11 win against Enogat Roy, while Wong Ling Ching sealed the deal with a 15-10, 11-15, 15-13 triumph over Romane Cloteaux-Foucault. Jacky admitted the challenge of facing European players after a long gap. 'I'm happy with the win, but it was tough. I haven't played against European opponents in a while, so I made some unforced errors. I'll work on reducing them,' he said. Meanwhile, Malaysia's taekwondo and swimming teams faced setbacks. Ahmad Nor Iman Hakim Rakib lost 2-0 to Taiwan's Hao-Yu Hsu in the men's 68kg kyorugi event, while swimmer Andrew Goh Zheng Yen missed the semifinals despite finishing second in Heat Three of the men's 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:17.84. The athletics squad, arriving yesterday, will hold their first training session at Lohrheidestadion in Bochum today. - Bernama

Malaysia awaits next medal at WUG 2025 after Hoe Yean's silver

THE national contingent to the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games (WUG) is still waiting for the next medal after the proud achievement of swimming champion Khiew Hoe Yean in Berlin last Thursday. Hoe Yean's silver medal in the men's 400-metre (m) freestyle swimming event means the national contingent needs six more medals to reach the set target of seven medals regardless of colour. In the competition, which entered the third day, Malaysia have yet to win another medal after taekwondo exponent Ahmad Nor Iman Hakim Rakib crashed out in the early rounds of the men's kyorugi -68 kilogramme (kg) event at Messe Essen here. Swimmer Goh Andrew Zheng Yen also crashed out in the early rounds of the men's 200m breaststroke event at the Schwimm- und Sprunghalle im Europasportpark. However, the badminton camp revived its chances of bringing home a medal in the mixed team event when they advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating France 3-0 in the round of 16 at the Westenergie Sporthalle, Mulheim an der Ruhr. The legendary Datuk Rashid Sidek's men will face India in the best-of-eight stage tonight (early Sunday morning Malaysia time). If they manage to advance to the semi-finals, the national squad will meet either Taiwan or Japan tomorrow. Meanwhile, the swimming squad will continue their challenge tomorrow as Lim Yin Chuen and Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal will each compete in the men's 100m freestyle heats. The athletics camp, which arrived yesterday, will continue their training and adaptation sessions at the competition venue at Lohrheidestadion, Bochum, tomorrow ahead of the competition curtain-raiser on Monday. Meanwhile, as of 3.30 pm (9.30 pm Malaysian time), the United States have taken the top spot in the medal standings with 5 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze medals, followed by the hosts (4-2-4) and South Korea (3-4-3) in third place. In this edition, Malaysia are participating in six of the 19 sports contested, namely gymnastics, badminton, archery, athletics, swimming and taekwondo, with a contingent of 64 athletes. WUG 2025 is scheduled to run until July 27.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin face stern final test against Korea's in-form duo

PETALING JAYA: Competing in Japan seems to bring out the best in men's doubles shuttlers Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani. The pair have struggled to maintain their form this year after a breakthrough 2024 but have shown glimpses of their brilliance by reaching their second consecutive Japan Open final. After capturing the title last year, Sze Fei-Izzuddin went on a superb run that eventually saw them become world No. 1 this year. Despite a dip in form following their Indian Open title win in January, they appear to have rediscovered their best form in the same tournament that first launched their rise. On Friday (July 18), the independent duo overcame Taiwan's world No. 24 Liu Kuang-heng and Yang Po-han 21-19, 21-11 in the semi-finals at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Although they faced difficulties, trailing 4-9 and 7-11 in the first game, the defending champions remained composed, using their experience to claw back and clinch the game. The narrow win bolstered their confidence, leading to a comfortable victory in the second game and setting up a title showdown against South Korea's world No. 3 pair, Seo Seung-jae and Kim Won-ho. The Koreans ended hopes of an all-Malaysian final by defeating Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi 21-14, 21-15. The match between Sze Fei-Izzuddin and Seung-jae-Won-ho will be a rematch of the Indian Open final, where the Malaysians triumphed in three games. However, the Korean duo claimed victory over Sze Fei-Izzuddin in the All-England second round, going on to win the title in Birmingham. Seung-jae and Won-ho, the undisputed best men's doubles pair this year, have also secured the Malaysian Open, German Open, and Indonesian Open titles, finishing as runners-up in the Singapore Open. Sze Fei-Izzuddin will attempt to become the first Malaysians to claim the men's doubles title in the Japan Open more than once. Meanwhile, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei's journey in the mixed doubles ended after a 12-21, 16-21 defeat to China's world No. 2 Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin. Tang Jie-Ee Wei were aiming for their first final this year but struggled against the Chinese pair, losing in just 38 minutes.
