Leap To Fame closes in on Australasian prizemoney record
The champ is back.
Leap To Fame launches a campaign which could see him become Australasia's all-time richest pacer when he steps out at Albion Park on Saturday night.
It will be one at least two lead-up runs before the Ladbrokes Inter Dominion starts at Albion Park on July 5.
Leap To Fame, who boasts 50 wins and over $4 million in prize money, hasn't started since one of the best wins in his career in the $NZ1 million Race by betcha at Cambridge on April 4.
The six-year-old worked so well last Saturday, co-trainers Grant and Trista Dixon opted to take him straight back to the races without a trial.

'Gee he worked well,' Grant Dixon said. 'The trials up here are only over a mile and you end up running terrific time in them, so we felt we might as well just take him straight to the races.
'We're really happy with him. By racing this week, it also gives us a bit of time in case another race or two don't stand-up between now and the Inter Dominion.'
Dixon was thrilled with how well Leap To Fame handled his first trip to NZ for the big Cambridge win.
'He thrived and came home in great order. It didn't take much at all out of him and he obviously raced so well over there,' he said.
'He's carrying a bit of weight we'll need to get off him before the Inter Dominion, but we've got time on our side.'
Leap To Fame has won his past 16 starts at Albion Park with the last defeat way back on November 4, 2023.
He started from an awkward inside draw that night and never saw daylight before finishing fourth.
Dixon pointed to a similarly awkward draw as the biggest challenge this week.
'You wouldn't believe he's drawn inside the back row again. I've never seen a horse get these awkward draws more than him,' he said.
'It makes it tricky. There's a few nice horses in this race and you can't afford to snag back at the start or you'll be giving away a huge start when they're running super times up front. We're going to need some luck.'
Leap To Fame, who won the 2023 Inter Dominion and missed last year's series with a health issue, is a $1.50 prepost favourite for this year's $1 million final on July 19.
Dixon will also have recent stable addition Captain Hammerhead, who beat the great stayer Swayzee in the Albury Cup earlier this year, step-out at Albion Park on Saturday night.
'His trial for us was OK, but we're still getting to know him,' he said. 'We'll know a lot more after this race and we've gone to the standing-start race because we're looking at races like the Flashing Red and Redcliffe Cup with him,' he said.
Captain Hammerhead won 14 races and more than $350,000 for Victorian trainer David Moran before switching to Team Dixon a few weeks back.
Team Dixon also has two of the major players – Fire And Passion (gate two) and Fight For Glory (11) – in Saturday night's $50,000 Group 2 Qbred 2YO final, which shapes a key pointer to the $500,000 Protostar.
'They're both nice horses – given the draws Fire And Passion is our best hope, but Barsby has the pole and will be hard to beat,' Grant said.

Legendary Australian film critic David Stratton dead at 85
Don't miss out on the headlines from Entertainment. Followed categories will be added to My News. Legendary film critic David Stratton has died at the age of 85. Stratton was best known to film fans for appearing alongside Margaret Pomeranz for decades on numerous movie review shows. The writer's family announced his death on Thursday afternoon, saying he died peacefully in hospital near his home in the Blue Mountains. 'David's passion for film, commitment to Australian cinema, and generous spirit touched countless lives,' said his family in a statement. Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton. Picture: Getty. The pair rose to fame on The Movie Show together. Picture: Supplied. 'He was adored as a husband, father, grand and great grand father and admired friend. 'David's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support from friends, colleagues, and the public recently and across his lifetime.' Stratton's family has asked for privacy in the wake of his death, but they shared a heartwarming request with his fans as a way of paying tribute to the beloved critic. Something To Talk About At the movies with David Stratton Before he retired last year, David Stratton spent nearly six decades reviewing movies. And millions of Australians came to know and love him thanks to an on-air partnership with fellow critic Margaret Pomeranz, which turned them into household names and one of the most beloved double acts in the country. On the show today, David joins Sarrah from his home – where he is still watching one, and often two, movies each day – to discuss his latest project, a book that chronicles three pivotal decades in Australian film; his enduring friendship with Margaret; his thoughts on some of his most infamous reviews – including an initially lukewarm reaction to comedy classic The Castle, and another that landed him in hot water with Julie Andrews - and the one film he thought was so awful he walked out of the cinema. David Stratton's new book Australia At The Movies is available to purchase here. Something To Talk About is a podcast by Stellar, hosted by Editor-In-Chief Sarrah Le Marquand. Find more from Stellar via Instagram @stellarmag or pick up a copy inside The Sunday Telegraph (NSW), Sunday Herald Sun (VIC), The Sunday Mail (QLD) and Sunday Mail (SA) Something To Talk About At the movies with David Stratton 00:00 41:07 '[We] invite everyone to celebrate David's remarkable life and legacy by watching their favourite movie, or David's favourite movie of all time — Singin' In the Rain.' Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is among those who have paid tribute to Stratton. 'With dry humour and sharp insight, David Stratton shared his love of film with our country,' he wrote on Twitter. 'All of us who tuned in to 'At the Movies' respected him for his deep knowledge and for the gentle and generous way he passed it on. May he rest in peace.' Stratton, along with Pomeranz, stepped down from At the Movies in 2014, an end of an era for the beloved duo after nearly three decades. The film critic retired in 2023 due to his declining health. Picture: Supplied. He retired from work in December 2023 after suffering health problems, having spent a month in hospital with a spinal fracture. 'It's been a very good innings,'' he told The Australian at the time. The beloved media personality was celebrated for his insightful critiques and deep understanding of film history, as well as his contribution to promoting Australian cinema both nationally and internationally. He was a well respected figure within the industry, serving as a jury member at various international film festivals throughout his career. The pair's on-screen chemistry became a huge part of their success. Picture: Supplied. Stratton's career in Australia began in 1963 when he first became involved in the local film industry. In 1966 he became the director of the Sydney Film Festival, and the role became the catalyst for his decision to remain Down Under for the rest of his life. Later on in his career he shared that his decision to ditch England for Australia left him with feelings of 'guilty' as it meant he was abandoning his family's tradition of working at their grocery store which had been open since the 1820s. Bizarrely, in 2014, Stratton hit headlines when it was revealed that he had been under surveillance by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation while he was director of the Sydney film festival, due to a visit he made to the USSR in the late 1960s. He received numerous awards for his contributions to film criticism and the film industry, including the Order of Australia for his services to the film industry as a critic and reviewer. The Temper Trap break nine-year silence with new single ‘Lucky Dimes'
Don't miss out on the headlines from Music. Followed categories will be added to My News. Aussie global hitmakers The Temper Trap are back together after a nine-year hiatus with a surprise new song 'Lucky Dimes.' The quartet have been riding high on social media and streaming over the past 18 months with a succession of popular remixes of their 2009 smash 'Sweet Disposition'. The love for that song continues at home with 'Sweet Disposition' landing at No. 11 on Triple J's recent Hottest 100 Australian Songs poll. They also enjoyed a viral moment when TikTok fans resurfaced a track by late rapper Mac Miller which heavily sampled the Temper Trap's hit 'Love Lost' and now has more than 400 million streams. Frontman Dougy Mandagi blamed burnout and a fear of repeating themselves for the band's long break between their 2016 album Thick as Thieves and their return to the singles game with 'Lucky Dimes'. The Temper Trap brings back 80s band photo style to launch new single. Picture: Alberto Zimmerman / Supplied. 'There was a little bit of burnout, but for me personally, I think I just couldn't see a path forward at the time where we would do something that would sound fresh and new and exciting,' he said from his London home. 'It just seemed like if we were going to get back in the studio … that we would just come out with more of the same and I didn't want to be in the studio for another 18 months doing Sweet Disposition 2.0. 'I needed to take a break and do other things and soak in more inspiration from life, the world, and different music, and I pursued a side project, a solo project as well, which was fun to do.' Mandagi got the band back together with Jonny Aherne, Toby Dundas and Joseph Greeran two years ago and have been steadily working on new songs as well as returning to festival stages. The Temper Trap have been enjoying viral success with Sweet Disposition remixes. Picture: Supplied. He said the older, wiser quartet were closer both personally and professionally after the members spent almost a decade pursuing their own creative endeavours and raising their respective children. 'I think the band is in a much better place now, we're closer than we've ever been,' Mandagi said. 'I would dare say that we actually had even more fun writing this record than we did the first record, when we first got together. 'It's cool, we've just been through a lot in life, we all have families now and I guess there's less ego in the room.' The band are working out tour dates in Australia for early 2026. Picture: Supplied. The darker-edged 'Lucky Dimes' has a 90s electronic rock vibe similar to Garbage, who have just announced their return to Australia for the first tour in a decade with the Good Things festival. The band worked with Grammy-nominated Aussie producer Styalz Fuego whose credits include hits with Troye Sivan, Charli XCX and Khalid. 'I'm a 90s child so I was the right age to receive all that good music. So yeah, we're just tapping into stuff we like,' he said. The single is out now with The Temper Trap still confirming plans to return for an Australian tour in early 2026. Shayne O'Cass's best bets, inside mail for Tamworth, Taree on Friday, August 15, 2025
Form analyst Shayne O'Cass provides his best bets and race-by-race analysis for Tamworth and Taree on Friday. â– â– â– â– â– TAMWORTH TIPS BEST BET Race 3 No.11 OAKFIELD VIRGINIA: Blue-blood filly who placed in a deep trial at Gosford last month. NEXT BEST Race 7 No.6 OCCULT: Has got Country Championships contender written all over him. VALUE Race 1 No.1 GREAT COSMIC: Local gelding who has trialled up nicely ahead of the debut. QUADDIE Race 5: 3,5,7,11 Race 6: 4,5,10 Race 7: 6 Race 8: 1,2,6,12 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Grant 'Bucko' Buckley will be popular in the TAB Jockeys Challenge TAMWORTH INSIDE MAIL RACE 5: Benchmark 58 (1600m) CROATIAN MADAME (11) has been nominated for other venues so is not a guaranteed starter. On top if she comes otherwise all roads lead to BIG SHORT (5), who is trained locally by this year's Grafton Guineas winning conditioner Wayne Brown. Big Short's three wins are from 1000m to 1200m but he has placed four times from right 1600m runs. SUIT DAY (3) has only managed two wins from 20 starts but he has placed nine times. Best of all, he is a win and a third from four Tamworth visits. BET: BIG SHORT (5) each-way. RELEASE POINT (4) was an impressive debut winner at Narromine in late April, 2024. The Rodney Northam trained gelding hasn't won again since but he has finished second, four times, in those subsequent nine starts. Been competitive in better races and gets Aaron Bullock. HINUNE (5) has accepted for Bathurst Monday. Big chance wherever she goes. CRUSADER RAZOR (10) has drawn wide but will come in plenty with the scratchings! Beaten 3-lengths by a good horse (Bonnie And Bruce) at Bathurst last time. BET: RELEASE POINT (4) to win, CRUSADER RAZOR (10) to place, Daily Double 1st Leg 4, 2nd Leg 1. OCCULT (6) was $1.24 into $1.12 when he made his Cody Morgan stable debut here on June 27 and won accordingly. One can only assume that he was bought (off Godolphin) with the Country Championships in mind and London to a Brick-on, he'll be in the Heat if they want him to go that way. OENOLOGY (3) has a wide draw and is first-up but he's a pretty reliable horse. TOUGH GUY (5) (Bullock's ride) is on such a rapid, upward trajectory. So too NIMBLE STAR (2) who has won 3 from 4 and lost the rider at the other. BET: OCCULT (6) to win, box trifecta 2,3,5,6. SPIRIT OF PLUTO (1) has won five times with eight placings from 32 starts. He has placed twice here, twice at the distance and twice first-up. He was on a hat-trick prior to a creditable effort in the Newmarket at Armidale. gets 'in' okay now after the claim. THE AFFIRMATIVE (12) has a really compelling set of numbers right across the board apart, maybe, by her first-up stats. The Anthony Manton-owned, Craig Clegg-trained local races well here at home but was dealt the visitor's draw! Can imagine LA PELAGO (6) making full use of the inside draw. BET: SPIRIT OF PLUTO (1) each-way. â– â– â– â– â– TAREE TIPS BEST BET Race 2 No.3 LYKOS: Big run with no luck on debut at Tuncurry on the Heavy 8. NEXT BEST Race 4 No.7 SHALAMIYNA: Beat a decent Maiden field here on a Heavy 9. VALUE Race 7 No.7 THE YOUNG YEARS: Her 'best' is good enough to give some cheek in the right Highway. TAREE INSIDE MAIL BUCK PHAROAH (5) gets the conditions to suit, big time, on Friday keeping in mind that his record on the Heavy going is nine starts for four wins and three placings. Four of his six career wins are circa this short trip and he races well at Taree. Nine of ZOE SHARK (3) 's last 11 starts have been at her home track at Newcastle. She's won two of them and one of those she beat Dark Glitter no less. LADY TULESSA (6) has nine wins on her resume which is not easy too in any era let alone in the Benchmark system. BET: BUCK PHAROAH (5) to win. VEECEE (1), the $750,000 Gold Coast yearling in 2022, sold online in 2024, has got lengths on these. In fact, I would be happy to back him in most Highways BUT with that said, I am not sure about him on really wet tracks. GOT THE SMARTS (5) has accepted for Ballina on Monday but drew poorly (13) as opposed to (2) here. She is a 6YO with just nine starts under her belt but she is loaded with talent. There is a scenario where both are absent which could pave the way for the Paul Snowden-trained CASH AND CARDS (2). BET: CASH AND CARDS (2) to place. THE YOUNG YEARS (7) is one of those horses whose 'best' is good enough to win most races that she runs in, even a Highway if things really fell into her lap that is. She goes well enough at Taree, she goes particularly well on Heavy tracks and has run okay in some rather strong 58's of late. HYPOTHERMIA (6) ran way above his $41 SP when fifth, beaten a diminishing three-lengths, in a 58 at Grafton last start. Both wins were on Soft. KAYZ TIME (1) has Sammy Conquers All and Bodhi Boy form. OSTRACISED (4) is racing so well this prep. For the record, he is '822117'. That last run was in the Coffs Harbour Cup. He wasn't great by any stretch but this is more his go on Friday. Two things weigh heavily in his favour IMHO, one is back to 1412m and the other is that he is a muddie par excellence. LEASE (8) commemorated his 50th career start with a win and what a determined win it was too from a horse who has a distinct preference for wet tracks.
