Pharmexcil flags export disruption risk due to COPP mandate; seeks urgent review

Time of India11-07-2025
The
Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India
on Friday sought a review of a recent circular issued by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, which mandates exclusive online submission of
Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product
(COPP) applications via the
ONDLS portal
.
While the Council supports digital integration and modernisation of regulatory frameworks, it foresees a major disruption to India's
pharmaceutical exports
, particularly to Rest of World (RoW) markets, if the mandate is abruptly enforced without a transitional roadmap for exporters.
Currently, Indian exports to RoW markets account for 45 per cent of total exports.

"Exporters are now burdened with a dual regulatory bottleneck - domestically through
CDSCO
's NOC/new drug classification delays, and internationally due to slower regulatory submissions and approvals abroad,"
Pharmexcil
DG K Raja Bhanu said in a statement.
The council has formally requested the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and CDSCO to delay the implementation of the ONDLS-only COPP submission model and engage in immediate stakeholder consultations, he added.

"This request has been made keeping in mind that
regulatory policies
must strike a balance between maintaining stringent quality standards and being trade-facilitative," Bhanu said.
While the government rightly aspires to ensure responsible manufacturing, some of the regulatory developments are misperceived by industry players as commercial limitations, he said.
The inability to secure timely COPP approvals or No Objection Certificates (NOCs) has the potential to push overseas buyers toward alternate suppliers from competing nations, causing irreversible long-term damage to Indian exporters, he added.

Starlink internet speed and price revealed ahead of India launch, service capped at 20 lakh users

Starlink is getting closer to launching its satellite internet service in India, and now there's more clarity on what users can expect in terms of pricing, speed, and availability. According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), Starlink will offer high-speed internet at a monthly cost of around Rs 3,000. However, the service won't be widely available to begin with. It will initially be capped at 20 lakh users across the country. The rollout is being positioned as a connectivity solution for remote and rural areas, where traditional broadband networks are either poor or non-existent. In India, the internet speeds are expected to be in the range of 25 Mbps to 220 update was confirmed by Minister of State for Telecom, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, who stated that Starlink has been given the green light to operate in India. The network will use low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver broadband services and is expected to play a complementary role rather than compete directly with existing telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, or BSNL — especially in urban and semi-urban regions, where those providers already have deep Starlink hasn't officially announced its India launch date, reports suggest that the service could go live within the next few months, possibly by the end of 2025. Pre-orders may open soon, with users likely needing to pay an upfront amount to book their connection. The monthly subscription fee is expected to fall between Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,200, depending on location and usage, and the hardware kit could cost around Rs 33,000, though the final pricing is still awaited. The Starlink hardware required for the connection — which includes a dish and router — will reportedly be distributed in partnership with Indian telecom giants like Airtel and Jio. These companies have signed infrastructure-sharing agreements with SpaceX to help bring the service to Indian ahead, Starlink is also working on a major technology upgrade that could significantly boost internet speeds. As per several reports on the internet, the next generation of Starlink satellites, expected to launch starting in 2026, is designed to deliver over 1,000 Gbps of capacity per satellite. These upgrades could eventually push download speeds up to 10 times faster than current levels, making the service even more useful in low-connectivity now, with a user cap in place and hardware costs on the higher side, Starlink is unlikely to disrupt mainstream internet providers. But in rural India, where options are limited, it could offer a vital lifeline. Stay tuned to India Today Tech for all the latest news around Starlink.- Ends

The IPO garnered strong response from all categories of investors, with NIIs leading the charge. NSDL IPO was booked 1.78 times at the end of the first day of the bidding process on Wednesday. The NII portion received 2.83 times bids, the retail portion garnered 1.87 times bids and the employee portion saw 3.68 times bids. The investor selling shareholders are several marquee names like IDBI Bank Ltd, NSE Ltd, Union Bank Ltd, State Bank of India Ltd, HDFC Bank Ltd (SS) and Administrator of the Specified Undertaking of the Unit Trust of India. Investors can apply in a lot of 18 shares and their multiples. The shares of the company will list only on the BSE. NSDL is a SEBI-registered Market Infrastructure Institution (MII) that provides a secure and scalable digital framework for India's financial markets. As of FY25, NSDL held a dominant position in securities custody, servicing 99.99% of dematerialised holdings by foreign portfolio investors. It also managed ₹ 70,16765 crore in assets for individuals and HUFs, capturing 67.90% of that specific market segment. Considering its dominant share in AUC, rapid growth in financials, stable revenue stream, healthy return ratios and focus on digital infrastructure expansions ahead, we assign a 'Subscribe' rating with a long-term investment perspective," said Geojit Financial Services. Anand Rathi and Canara Bank Securities also have 'Subscribe' ratings on the issue. The grey market premium (GMP) trend for NSDL IPO shares is also decent. NSDL IPO GMP today is ₹ 135 apiece. At the prevailing GMP and the upper end of the price band of ₹ 800, NSDL IPO listing is likely at ₹ 935, a premium of nearly 17%. However, investors should not base their investment decisions solely on GMP. They should also consider company fundamentals and risk appetite. Disclaimer: This story is for educational purposes only.
