Pakistan coach Mike Hesson breaks silence on reports of asking Babar Azam to keep wickets for T20I comeback
New Delhi: Babar Azam remains unselected in Pakistan T20I team, and the right-handed batter will also miss the series against Bangladesh. Since he was dropped, it was reported that white-ball coach Mike Hesson has suggested to the ex-Pakistan captain the possibility of resuming wicket keeping duties as a means of getting his place back in the T20I team.
But Mike Hesson has already silenced all rumours and clarified that he did not recommend Babar Azam to become a wicketkeeper. These reports sparked off criticism among various former cricketers with Rashid Latif, Basit Ali, Moin Khan and Sikander Bakht openly criticizing the reported proposal.
Hesson gave a categorical answer and strongly maintained that he did not have such a dialogue with the 30-year-old. He also explained that should Babar Azam be called back into the T20I environment, he would re-enter the side as a top-order batsman the right-hander, in particular as an opener.
'No discussion took place with Babar where I suggested he also keep wickets. He has never kept wickets in his entire career, and you suggest he keep wickets. This is not the way to treat a former captain and senior,' Hesson told reporters.
Rumours circulating that Pakistan cricket head coach Mike Hesson had told players they could be dropped because they had a strike rate below 150 were denied by him also. He made it clear that nothing of this sort has been discussed with the team.
'I have also not told the players that if they want to keep their places in the team, they have to bat at strike rates of over 150. We are working on some things in this direction,' Hesson said.
Mike Hesson said that he is also working closely with the selection committee on finding players who can play several match roles in the T20I set-up.
'We are looking at players who are ready to float in the batting order and perform multiple roles, but that does not mean there will be no spot for specialist players,' Hesson said.
The T20I series will begin on July 20. All the games are scheduled to take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
Pakistan squad: Salman Ali Agha (Captain), Abrar Ahmed, Ahmed Daniyal, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Mirza, Sufyan Moqim.

Dhawan traded barbs with former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi as well on the micro-blogging platform as the tension on the border spiked. Users on social media didn't let it go unnoticed, questioning the former Indian cricketer about the contradiction between his previous statements and current actions. Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh also faced criticism as they had previously posted messages of patriotism but are now set to compete against Pakistan on July 20. Indian ex cricketers like Harbhajan, Yuvraj & Dhawan are happily playing WCL matches vs Pakistan in a private league! But when it's public, they scream nationalism. Why does the Govt stay silent? 'Playing With Us Jhulu Di': India, Jhulan Goswami Aim For England ODI Whitwash
Last Updated: Jhulan Goswami hopes India sweeps the ODI series 3-0 against England. Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues shared memories with her ahead of the second ODI. Ahead of the second ODI against England at Lord's, veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami wants the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side to sweep the 50-over series 3-0 after winning the opening encounter by four wickets in Southampton. The visiting side has already proved their potential by winning their first-ever T20I series against England by 4-2 last week. Ahead of their second ODI, Harmanpreet and Jemimah Rodrigues had a video call with the former pacer from the Lord's and shared their memories of playing together at the venue. 'So good to see you again. Guess where we are," Harmanpreet and Jemimah said in unison in a video posted by BCCI Women on X. 'We miss you Jhulu di," Jemimah said. 'Same here, I'm also missing you guys, I wish I was there watching this game from the stands," Jhulan replied. Jemimah quickly responded, 'Not watching but playing with us, Jhulu di" to which all of them shared a laugh. Continuing the conversation, India captain said, 'We will miss your Lord's spell tomorrow." 'I'm gonna miss you guys. It was a great memory. We won 3-0 for the first time in England. I hope you guys do that same. Repeat that same. You've got great momentum on your side," Jhulan said. Goswami, regarded as one of India's finest fast bowlers, brought the curtain down on her illustrious career at Lord's in September 2022, taking two wickets in a victorious ODI against England to sweep the series 3-0 for the first time on English soil. With the momentum on India's side following their historic T20I series win and win in the opening ODI, the hopes of repeating 2022 heroics are very much achievable for the touring team. The second ODI is set to be played at Lord's on Saturday. (With IANS Inputs) view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Kohli Would've Done It Comfortably': Ex-ENG Quick's Jaw-Dropping Take On Lord's Test
Curated By : Last Updated: July 19, 2025, 17:04 IST Virat Kohli (AFP Photo) Unending drama unfolded at Lord's last week when India locked horns with England in the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Both sides posted identical first-innings scores of 387, before India's bowlers bundled England out for 192, giving the tourists a real shot at seizing control. However, the hosts came back roaring with a lethal bowling attack. The likes of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer were yelling fire as they reduced India to 58/4 by stumps on Day 4, and the collapse deepened early on the final day. India were tottering at 82/7 when Jadeja took charge and put up a brave fight alongside Bumrah and Siraj, but England held their nerve to seal a 22-run win. Former England pacer Steve Harmison reckons the result at Lord's could have swung India's way had Virat Kohli been in the playing XI. Speaking to Cricinfo, the former England pacer said the touring party would've chased down the target and taken a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. 'India has scored more hundreds, more top-order runs, and more new ball wickets, but England has got a knack of finding a way to win. Finding a way of creating an event throughout a session to change the course of the game," Harmison said. 'For me, India has to start believing. This is where the likes of Virat Kohli were unbelievable. In a fourth innings chase, he goes and wins the game comfortably. He would have won that game comfortably at Lord's," he added. This is India's first England tour since 2014, in which Virat Kohli isn't part of the squad. The former captain announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, more than a month before the Test series. It brought the curtains down on a stellar 14-year career across continents and conditions, both as batter and captain. Swipe Left For Next Video View all In 123 Tests, Kohli amassed 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, with 30 centuries, 31 fifties, and a top score of 254*. He finishes as India's fourth-highest run-scorer in the format, behind only Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Rahul Dravid (13,265), and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122).
