The genie is out: 24-hour trading gaining momentum, Interactive Brokers chairman says

Yahoo5 days ago

(Reuters) -Interactive Brokers Chairman Thomas Peterffy on Thursday said 24-hour trading has become more acceptable, calling it a genie that is hard to put back into the bottle, at the Piper Sandler Global Exchange & Trading Conference.
Global interest in the lucrative U.S. equity market has surged in recent years, driven by rising retail participation, prompting exchanges and financial firms to seek new methods to expand access, particularly by extending trading hours.
"24 hours' trading is obviously very important to many people in the far Middle and near East, much more so than in the U.S. or even in Europe," Peterffy said at the conference.
In May, about 2.2% of Interactive Brokers' volume was done in overnight trading, Peterffy said, adding that he expects the number to rise to 25% to 30% in the next year.
Interactive Brokers launched overnight trading in November 2022, while exchanges like Nasdaq, Cboe Global Markets and Intercontinental Exchange, the operator of the New York Stock Exchange, have announced plans for extended trading hours.
Ken Griffin's Citadel Securities had flagged risks of 24-hour trading to the Securities and Exchange Commission in April, highlighting the need for a clear regulatory framework and market infrastructure to support its implementation.

Syngenta group expects minimal impact from U.S tariffs in 2025, executive says

CAMPINAS, Brazil (Reuters) -Agrochemicals company Syngenta Group expects a minimal impact from tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on its business in 2025, Steven Hawkins, global president of Syngenta's crop protection business, said on Tuesday. While the company is growing and investing in its portfolio of biological products, these are not a substitute for synthetic crop protections, Hawkins told journalists on the sidelines of Syngenta's One Agro event in Brazil's Campinas, a city in the state of Sao Paulo.

Cost of Canada's new US-made fighter jet fleet set to rise, watchdog says

OTTAWA (Reuters) -Canada's planned purchase of 88 Lockheed Martin F-35 fighters will cost at least 45% more than initially estimated and the project is also threatened by a pilot shortage, the country's top watchdog reported on Tuesday. Canada, seeking to replace its antiquated fleet of CF-18 jets, announced the C$19-billion ($13.89 billion) deal in January 2023. But Auditor General Karen Hogan said the final bill would be at least C$27.7 billion and could go as high as C$33.2 billion, citing factors such as foreign-exchange fluctuations and rising facilities costs. The report is another blow to a 15-year, trouble-plagued attempt by successive administrations to replace the CF-18 jets, some of which have been flying for more than 40 years. Hogan, who reports to parliament, said the Defence Ministry approach "had weaknesses, lack(ed) proactive measures to minimize the impact of potential threats, and the project did not have robust contingency plans." A shortage of pilots that the Auditor General's Office identified in 2018 is still a significant risk, she said. The construction of special facilities for the jets is three years behind schedule. Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a review in March of the contract, in part because he said Canada relied too much on the United States for security. Delivery of the jets is scheduled to occur between 2026 and 2032. In response, Defence Minister David McGuinty said Ottawa had put in place a plan to identify all potential risks associated with the deal. "We will continue to work closely with our partners to actively manage costs throughout the duration of this project," he said in a statement. Canada announced plans to buy the U.S.-made F-35 in 2010 but a switch in governments, rule changes for aircraft procurement, as well as challenges from the pandemic triggered major delays. Meta's Threads to test direct messaging feature in select markets

By Jaspreet Singh (Reuters) -Meta Platforms (META) said it would start rolling out direct messaging on its Threads app, adding a feature long offered by rivals, in a bid to attract more users. Users in select markets, including Hong Kong and Thailand, will get a dedicated inbox for direct messages on the app as part of the test, eliminating the need to switch to Instagram's messaging platform, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Tuesday. Meta said messages on Threads will not be encrypted for now. Threads and Instagram have long been intertwined as part of Meta's plans to leverage the image and video sharing platform's massive user base to better compete with services such as X, TikTok and Reddit for digital ad dollars. Launched in 2023 as a competitor to Elon Musk's X, then known as Twitter, following his chaotic takeover of the platform, Threads quickly attracted consumers and now boasts over 350 million monthly active users. Meta announced the expansion of advertising on Threads to all eligible advertisers globally in April. However, the company has said it did not expect Threads to be a "meaningful driver" of revenue growth in 2025. Research firm Emarketer expects Threads' U.S. monthly active users will grow 17.5% to 60.5 million by next year, surpassing X, whose user base is expected to decline 14.4% to 50 million. U.S. trade restrictions and the rise of AI‑powered ad targeting have pushed social media platforms to enhance their offerings, adding distinctive features and sharper user experiences to stand out in a saturated market.
