The genie is out: 24-hour trading gaining momentum, Interactive Brokers chairman says

Yahoo4 days ago

(Reuters) -Interactive Brokers Chairman Thomas Peterffy on Thursday said 24-hour trading has become more acceptable, calling it a genie that is hard to put back into the bottle, at the Piper Sandler Global Exchange & Trading Conference.
Global interest in the lucrative U.S. equity market has surged in recent years, driven by rising retail participation, prompting exchanges and financial firms to seek new methods to expand access, particularly by extending trading hours.
"24 hours' trading is obviously very important to many people in the far Middle and near East, much more so than in the U.S. or even in Europe," Peterffy said at the conference.
In May, about 2.2% of Interactive Brokers' volume was done in overnight trading, Peterffy said, adding that he expects the number to rise to 25% to 30% in the next year.
Interactive Brokers launched overnight trading in November 2022, while exchanges like Nasdaq, Cboe Global Markets and Intercontinental Exchange, the operator of the New York Stock Exchange, have announced plans for extended trading hours.
Ken Griffin's Citadel Securities had flagged risks of 24-hour trading to the Securities and Exchange Commission in April, highlighting the need for a clear regulatory framework and market infrastructure to support its implementation.

London's FTSE stalls after four-week sprint as trade tensions dominate

By Purvi Agarwal and Pranav Kashyap (Reuters) -London's benchmark equities index was flat on Monday after a four-week bull run, in caution as top U.S. and Chinese officials met in London to try and defuse a high-stakes trade dispute. The FTSE 100 closed flat at 8,832.28 points, while the mid-cap FTSE 250 was up 0.6%. A meeting with top officials from the U.S. and China unfolded in London that investors hope will produce some progress in de-escalating trade tensions between the world's two biggest economies. The discussions emerged from a phone call between the nations' respective presidents last week, where they pledged to continue dialogue amid a trade war that threatens a global supply chain shock and slower economic growth. British finance minister Rachel Reeves will hold a meeting with Chinese vice premier He Lifeng, although there were no details on when the talks would be held. London stocks rounded off the previous week with gains and logged a fourth straight week of advances, the longest in nearly five months. A U.S. jobs report on Friday allayed concerns of an economic slowdown in the world's biggest economy despite a U.S. tariff roller coaster. The non-life insurers index led losses among sectors, ending down 1.3%. Pharma stocks dipped 0.4%, as investors looked to book some profits. Among individual stocks, WPP slipped 2.8% to the bottom of the FTSE 100 after the ad group said its Chief Executive Officer Mark Read would retire by the end of 2025. Spectris soared 60%, leading FTSE 250 gains, after the scientific instruments maker said it has received a takeover proposal from private equity firm Advent valuing its shares at 37.35 pounds per share. Nvidia CEO says UK needs computing power to develop AI

By Sam Tabahriti LONDON (Reuters) -Britain lacks the computing infrastructure to deliver the full potential of its leading artificial intelligence research base, Nvidia's CEO said on Monday, as the UK partners with the U.S. chipmaker for a new AI testing environment. Jensen Huang's comments came as the Financial Conduct Authority announced a new framework to allow financial firms to experiment with AI tools in a controlled environment from October, part of a government strategy to support innovation and economic growth. "The UK is the largest AI ecosystem in the world without its own infrastructure," Huang told an audience at London Tech Week alongside Prime Minister Keir Starmer, citing the country's top universities, startups and third-largest AI venture capital market. He praised Starmer's plan to boost Britain's domestic computing capabilities by 20 times and provide 1 billion pounds ($1.36 billion) of investment. "The ability to build these AI supercomputers here in the UK will naturally attract more startups, it will naturally enable all of the rich ecosystem of researchers here," he added, saying Britain was "an incredible place to invest". The FCA has partnered with Nvidia to provide access to advanced computing power and bespoke AI. The programme is intended to help firms in the early stages of exploring AI, offering access to technical expertise, better datasets and regulatory support, the FCA said. It is open to all financial services companies experimenting with AI. Finance minister Rachel Reeves has urged Britain's regulators to remove barriers to economic growth, describing it as an "absolute top priority" for the government. In April, she said she was pleased with how the FCA and the Prudential Regulation Authority, part of the Bank of England, were responding to her call to cut red tape. Starmer also said in a speech opening London Tech Week that Israeli fintech firm Liquidity Group would open its European headquarters in London, representing an investment of 1.5 billion pounds.
