T'puram: Vanchiyoor police on Thursday arrested advocate Beyline Das, 48, in a case related to the brutal assault of his junior advocate Syamili J V, 26, during a discussion about her expulsion from office on Tuesday.
The Ambalathara native was arrested near Station Kadavu based on a tip-off received by police. Das had moved an anticipatory bail application and a court was about to consider it on Friday.
Das's mobile phone remained switched off as he went absconding after the incident. It turned on at Poonthura on Tuesday and at Kazhakkoottam on Thursday morning. With this, police confirmed his presence in the city and search was intensified.
In the evening, Vanchiyoor station house officer received a tip-off about him travelling in a red car near Station Kadavu. Soon, the control room was alerted and a Dansaf patrolling team started following him.
Thumba police too got in touch with the Dansaf team through the control room and the car was stopped at Station Kadavu. Vanchiyoor police also reached the spot and took him into custody.
Das was staying at his friend's house at Pallithura and even visited his ancestral house at Poonthura.
The accused was charged under non-bailable BNS Section 74 (for using criminal force against a woman with the intention to outrage her modesty), 126 (2) (for wrongful restraint) and 115 (2) (for causing hurt). He was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
Syamili thanked Kerala Police for arresting the accused and hoped legal proceedings would lead to apt punishment for Das. He had slapped her on the face all of a sudden during the discussion and she fell down.
Pulling her up, the accused kept on slapping her until she fainted. Syamili was attacked when she was five months pregnant as well, she alleged.
Oppn alleges CPM connection
Opposition leader V D Satheesan alleged earlier that Das was not being arrested since he was close to CPM leaders.
"Das, who brutally assaulted young lawyer Syamili, is being shielded by the govt and the police. The issue involves not only the disrespect towards womanhood but also inappropriate behaviour at workplace.
However, neither the police nor the govt has taken any action," he alleged.
"Das was a CPM candidate in the local body elections. Those who have come forward to protect him have close ties with the ruling party. There is suspicion that the govt is following the usual practice of saving party affiliates regardless of their criminal activities. The CPM's typical approach of pretending to support the victim while actually protecting the perpetrator cannot be allowed in this case," he said.
Congress and UDF will fully support Shyamili's legal battle, he added.

Kerala High Court Grants Interim Relief To Rapper Vedan In Rape Case
Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday granted interim relief to Malayalam rapper Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, directing that he should not be arrested until his anticipatory bail plea in a rape case is fully heard and disposed of. The relief came even as hearings on his plea continued, with the court scheduling further proceedings for Wednesday. Vedan, who has been accused of sexual assault by a woman doctor, has been absconding since the case surfaced. The Kerala Police had earlier issued a lookout notice fearing he might attempt to leave the country. According to the FIR lodged in Kochi last month, the complainant alleged that she was sexually exploited by Vedan between 2021 and 2023. The complaint also mentions that they briefly lived together. She further alleged financial exploitation, stating that in 2021, when Vedan was preparing to release his debut album, she gave him Rs 15,000 on two occasions and another Rs 8,300 to fund his train travel. Their acquaintance reportedly began over social media, but in 2023, Vedan allegedly broke off the relationship, leading to distress and prompting her to file the complaint. Two other women have also since accused the rapper of misbehaviour. Vedan, 25, rose to fame under the banner Voice of the Voiceless. He debuted in 2020 and, within the same year, gained recognition as a lyricist in hit films like Nayattu, Karam, and Manjummel Boys. His socially conscious rap style earned him a large following across Kerala. This is not his first brush with controversy. In April, Vedan was arrested along with eight others following a narcotics raid at his rented apartment near here, though he was later released on bail. Around the same time, forest officials briefly detained him after discovering a tiger's tooth on his necklace. Despite his rising popularity, the present allegations have cast a shadow over the young rapper's career, with the court's next decision on his bail plea eagerly awaited.

Left Front didn't want people to know much about ‘architect of modern Tripura': CM Saha on Maharaja Bir Bikram's birth anniversary
Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday honoured Tripura's last king, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, on his 117th birth anniversary and said the erstwhile Left Front Government had made social and cultural arrangements to ensure people didn't know much about 'the architect of modern Tripura'. The CPM-led Left Front ruled Tripura for 25 consecutive years till 2018 and for five years in a separate stint before that. Paying tributes to the last king, Saha said at the Zero Point in Kaman Chowmuhani, 'Maharaja Bir Bikram is called the architect of modern Tripura. His thoughts are still relevant today. Our Government is implementing the dreams that he had envisioned for the development of Tripura.' It's from the Zero Point, which is situated right in front of the south and main gate of Ujjayanta Palace, which used to be the seat of power in the Manikya monarchical era at the time of Tripura's merger with the Indian Union in 1949, that all distances to Agartala city are calculated. Saha stated that the erstwhile Government didn't honour Maharaja Bir Bikram and his contributions to the state, and instead made such social and educational arrangements to ensure that the people of Tripura wouldn't be able to know much about him. It was only after the BJP came to power in the state in 2018 that the last king got recognition. Saha said that Maharaja Bir Bikram built one of the oldest airports in the Northeast region. The Singerbil airstrip, which later became Agartala airport, was rechristened as Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport after the BJP came to power here in 2018. Prior to World War II, Maharaja Bir Bikram travelled to different parts of the world and met global leaders and gathered ideas about how to develop Tripura. 'We know he (Bir Bikram) used to think about vidyapith. He also thought of a rural university. He wanted to have a medical college, a general college, and an engineering college. Today, we are implementing this,' he told reporters. Saha also talked about Maharaja Bir Bikram's commitment to harmony between tribals and non-tribals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered the state's last ruler on his birth anniversary. 'Remembering Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur Ji on his birth anniversary. He is admired for his exemplary efforts in developing Tripura. His passion for public service, commitment to empowering the poor and dedication to social upliftment continue to inspire us greatly. The Central Government and the Government of Tripura are working tirelessly to realise his vision,' he wrote on X. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid respects on X, ' Homage to Tripura Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur Ji on his Jayanti. He is remembered as the 'Architect of Modern Tripura,' whose farsighted reforms in education, infrastructure, and governance laid the foundation for the state's progress. His legacy continues to inspire generations,' he wrote. Remembering Bir Bikram on his birth anniversary, BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda wrote on X, 'I bow in tribute to Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur, the 'Architect of Modern Tripura,' on his birth anniversary. His time as ruler was a defining chapter in Tripura's journey, shaping its growth and setting strong foundations for future development. His legacy continues to guide us in working with deep commitment for the progress and welfare of the people of Tripura'. Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress celebrated the day with a host of cultural events in different parts of the state as well. Speaking to reporters, state Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha said, 'Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur used to be a visionary king of Tripura. He tried to enrich the education and cultural world of the state. He used to rule the state with the mindset of a subject, not a king, which is why different schools, colleges, and cultural centers were set up during his reign. He was a symbol of progress, peace, and a bridge of unity between tribals and non-tribals during the monarchical era itself.' In a jibe at the BJP-TIPRA Motha-IPFT Government, the Congress leader said, 'There is a concerted effort to create a rift within the unity of tribals and non-tribals. Many programmes are being held to destroy the ethnic unity in Tripura. The Congress can't accept it at any cost.' Ashish Kumar Saha urged people to strengthen the bond of unity and solidarity between all communities and maintain peace.
