MTV Video Music Awards are back: See who made the nominations list

USA Todaya day ago
The 2025 VMAs are shaping up to be a night of musical "Mayhem."
MTV revealed the nominees for its annual Video Music Awards show, a poptastic spectacle that brings together the biggest artists of the year to celebrate the top songs and music videos chosen by fans. This year's ceremony will air live from New York's UBS Arena on Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
Pop icon Lady Gaga, who roared back to music this spring with her acclaimed album "Mayhem," leads the nominations with 12 nods, including video of the year, artist of the year and best album. Gaga's "Die with a Smile" collaborator Bruno Mars follows closely behind with 11 nominations.
Other top nominees include hip-hop juggernaut Kendrick Lamar, Blackpink singer Rosé, pop princess Sabrina Carpenter, "Wicked" star Ariana Grande, R&B crooner The Weeknd, alternative pop singer Billie Eilish and British pop star Charli XCX.
VMAs 2024 winners: Taylor Swift has a big night as Chappell Roan wins best new artist
Pop titan Taylor Swift, the most decorated solo artist in VMAs history, also nabbed a nomination for artist of the year, despite having not released a new music video this year. In 2024, Swift took home a slew of prizes including video of the year, artist of the year, best collaboration ("Fortnight" with Post Malone), best pop and best direction.
Last year's VMAs were filled with career milestones and knockout performances. Electropop songstress Chappell Roan was crowned best new artist and dominated the stage with a medieval-themed number set to her breakout hit "Good Luck, Babe!" Meanwhile, Carpenter won her first moon person for song of the year ("Espresso") and performed a cheeky medley number that saw her lock lips with an alien dancer.
Fans can vote in 19 gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com through Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. ET. Voting for best new artist will remain active into the Sept. 7 ceremony. Nominations for social categories will be announced at a later date.
Here's a look at the nominations for the 2025 MTV VMAs:

Sources Reveal If Britney Spears Is Actually Planning an MTV VMAs Performance

THE RUNDOWN Britney Spears won't be making an award show comeback performance anytime soon. After rumors circulated online that Spears would hit the stage at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, possibly bringing her son Jayden along, multiple sources told TMZ that there is no truth to the speculation. She was 'never approached by the award show to perform, was never on the performers' list, and there are no plans in motion behind the scenes,' the outlet wrote. Still, Spears's influence may well be felt at the ceremony. At last year's VMAs, artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Tate McRae were in Spears-inspired looks. Megan famously wore a python around her neck—a clear nod to Spears's iconic 2001 performance of 'I'm a Slave 4 U.' McRae, meanwhile, also paid homage to Spears's 2001 VMA appearance by wearing a sheer lace Roberto Cavalli dress nearly identical to Spears's red carpet outfit. Had Spears performed at the 2025 ceremony, it would have marked her first VMA appearance in nearly a decade. She last attended in 2016, when she took the stage alongside G-Eazy for their collaboration 'Make Me...,' from her ninth studio album, Glory. The MTV Video Music Awards will air on Sept. 7, 2025.

Watch Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel Reignite Their Feud on ‘Millionaire'

Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel, who have been publicly sparring since 2005, brought their ongoing feud to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire last night. Kimmel currently hosts and executive produces the ABC game show, which premiered its fourth season last week. Damon appeared on the latest episode as a contestant, playing alongside a secret weapon, Jeopardy! host and champion Ken Jennings. The duo made it through all of the rounds to the final million-dollar query: 'Which of these words is used to describe one of the most beautiful auditory effects on Earth: the sound made by the leaves of trees when wind blows through them?' More from Rolling Stone Trump Says He Was Not 'Solely Responsible' for 'Late Show' Cancellation How to Watch 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' Online Without Cable Jimmy Kimmel, Ben Stiller, Elizabeth Warren Question CBS' Decision to End 'The Late Show' Jennings suggested the pair play it safe by removing two answers, which annoyed Kimmel. 'You know you could have won this own your own?' Kimmel told Jennings. Damon acknowledged, 'It is so awesome having Ken Jennings as your partner in a trivia game. I can't even tell you.' Jennings then said to the audience, 'Everybody but Jimmy Kimmel, do we love Matt Damon or what?' Kimmel responded by boo-ing, leading Damon to quip, 'Thank you so much! You are making him so miserable right now.' 'You're turning this into an uprising,' Kimmel told Jennings. 'I'm coming onto Jeopardy! with someone you hate!' Damon and Jennings ultimately won $1 million for Damon's nonprofit which helps bring clean water to communities in need. 'This is the least dramatic million-dollar moment in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire history,' Kimmel noted when they claimed victory. As he handed the duo their giant check, Kimmel reached out to Damon and said, 'I'm begrudgingly going to shake your hand.' Kimmel and Damon have been playing along with their pretend rivalry since 2005 when Kimmel introduced a bit on Jimmy Kimmel Live where he feigned cutting Damon from air. 'I want to apologize to Matt Damon, we ran out of time,' the late-night host joked. Since then, the pair have continued the bit, even involving people like Ben Affleck in the feud.
