Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades officially mourns Chief of Staff Mohamed Deif: Abu Obeida - War on Gaza

Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida officially mourned the brigades Chief of Staff Mohamed Deif, saying he was killed while leading the battle against the Israeli army near Khan Younis last July.
In a video statement, Abu Obeida also mourned several other members of Qsaam's Military Council who were also killed during battles against the Israeli army.

"The Al-Qassam Brigades announce to our great people the martyrdom of a group of distinguished fighters and heroic commanders," Abu Obeida announced in a video statement.
Israel had previously claimed to have killed Deif and confirmed his death in early August. However, Hamas consistently denied these reports until Thursday's announcement.
Israel had accused Deif of being one of the key architects of the group's 7 October offensive, along with Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed on 16 October 2024.

Deif, known as 'the cat with nine lives' for surviving seven failed Israeli assassination attempts, was born in 1965 to a Palestinian refugee family from al-Qubeiba. He joined Hamas in 1987, just weeks after its formation during the First Intifada. He was arrested by Israeli forces in 1989 and imprisoned for 16 months without trial.
Deif, a top target on Israel's wanted list, appeared in only three known photographs: one from years ago, another with his face masked, and a third showing only his silhouette. Despite Israel's extensive intelligence operations, no recent image of him was ever obtained.
After being released in a prisoner exchange, Deif went on to establish the Al-Qassam Brigades in the 1990s and oversaw numerous operations against Israel.
Known as "the mastermind," he is believed to have organized the 2006 raid into Israel that killed two Israeli soldiers and captured Gilad Shalit. Hamas held Shalit captive for over five years until his release on 18 October 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange deal.
Deif also orchestrated the five-year effort to deceive Israeli intelligence services, Mossad and Shin Bet, about Shalit's location in Gaza.
Although he had close ties with the Palestinian Authority, he was briefly arrested by them in 2000, reportedly as part of an agreement with Israel, only to be released or escape from prison later that year.
Deif took full command of Hamas in 2002 after the assassination of Al-Qassam's commander-in-chief, Salah Shehadeh. However, for several years, the effective command was exercised by Deif's deputy, Ahmed Jabari, after Deif was severely wounded in an Israeli assassination attempt.

FM calls for int'l efforts to stem Palestinian bloodshed

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty stressed the urgent need for concerted international efforts to stem the bloodshed of the Palestinian people and to ensure the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, in light of the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe caused by the ongoing Israeli aggression. His remarks came during a meeting with Germany's Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Florian Hahn, held on the sidelines of the High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the two-State Solution, currently taking place at the UN headquarters in New York. Abdelatty reviewed the ongoing preparations for Egypt's hosting of a conference on early recovery and reconstruction, to be convened immediately upon the announcement of a ceasefire agreement. He praised the solid and long-standing Egyptian-German ties, underlining the depth of cooperation across various sectors, and reaffirmed that Germany remains one of Egypt's most important political and economic partners. The minister also commended the significant role played by German companies in Egypt's comprehensive development efforts, encouraging German investment in diverse fields in light of the promising opportunities offered by the Egyptian market. He further stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation in energy, regulated migration and labor mobility, vocational training, and joint engagement in Africa. He also briefed his German counterpart on the latest developments in Gaza and Egypt's efforts to broker a ceasefire and facilitate the release of hostages and detainees. Abdelatty stressed the need to accelerate international recognition of the state of Palestine within the framework of the two-state solution, noting that establishing a political horizon for a just and sustainable settlement to the Palestinian issue is essential for peace and stability across the region. He reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering support for the Palestinian people in securing their legitimate rights, topped by the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with Al-Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) as its capital.

Malta's PM reveals plans to recognize State of Palestine

Israa Farhan Malta will formally recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Tuesday. The decision comes just hours after a similar declaration by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and follows France's recent pledge to recognize Palestine ahead of the UN meeting. In a social media statement, Abela reaffirmed Malta's commitment to lasting peace in the Middle East. The Maltese government has faced mounting internal pressure in recent months to take a clear stance on Palestinian statehood. In mid-July, the right-wing opposition publicly called for immediate recognition. The Mediterranean island nation, a member of the European Union, has a longstanding history of supporting Palestinian rights and endorsing a two-state solution. Prime Minister Abela initially revealed plans to recognize Palestine in May, indicating the move would take place during a UN conference scheduled for June. However, the conference was later postponed. Malta now joins a growing number of European nations backing Palestinian statehood. Ireland, Norway, and Spain formally recognized Palestine as an independent state in May 2024. The international momentum reflects increasing frustration with the ongoing conflict in Gaza and growing support for diplomatic efforts to establish a sovereign Palestinian state. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

15 western countries push for Palestine recognition - Region

Fifteen countries, including France, Spain, and Norway, called on countries worldwide to move to recognise a Palestinian state, France's top diplomat said Wednesday. The foreign ministers of 15 countries late Tuesday issued a joint statement following a conference in New York, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, aimed at reviving a two-state solution between Israelis and the Palestinians. "In New York, together with 14 other countries, France is issuing a collective appeal: we express our desire to recognise the State of Palestine and invite those who have not yet done so to join us," French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot wrote on X. President Emmanuel Macron announced last week he would formally recognize Palestinian statehood in September, provoking strong opposition from Israel and the United States. France is hoping to build a momentum around the formal recognition of a Palestinian state. On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the UK will formally recognize the State of Palestine in September unless Israel takes various "substantive steps", including agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza. Starmer's move, paired with Paris, would make the two European allies the first G7 nations to do so. In the statement, 15 nations including Spain, Norway, and Finland affirmed their "unwavering commitment to the vision of the two-state solution." Nine of the signatories which have not yet recognised the Palestinian state expressed "the willingness or the positive consideration of their countries" to do so, including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Seventeen countries plus the European Union and Arab League during the conference joined calls for Hamas to disarm and end its rule of Gaza, in a bid to end the devastating Israeli war on the Palestinian territory. * This story was edited by Ahram Online.
